A Navy family with government orders to move from California to Virginia was surprised when their gym wanted to charge them a $200 early termination fee.
The family told the gym that thanks to one, that being total baloney and two, the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which postpones and suspends certain civil obligations for active duty military, they wouldn’t be paying it. The gym insisted on a $100 fee per contract but the family continued to say no. “I told her we’re not paying it,” the wife told the Ventura County Star. “This is ridiculous. We have orders. We’re moving all the way to Virginia Beach.”
She’s right, and other servicemembers who find themselves in these situations should tell the businesses who won’t listen to buzz off. If they don’t, they should notify their chain of command.
