Is Sugar Killing Us?

Is a packet of sugar a sweet dose of death? A big article in the New York Times Magazine recently explored how sugar might be a secret scourge destroying our health. And for the purposes of this discussion, there is no distinction between regular sugar and HFCS – for these researchers it’s all toxic. Why?

Besides the obvious health issues from becoming overweight, the researchers, particularly Robert H. Lustig, MD, Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at UCSF, argue that overconsumption leads to fatty liver and insulin resistance, and those lead to some types of cancers. It’s not the sugars that you get from glucose or otherwise naturally occurring sources, it’s all the added sugar that is, well, adding up.

In this hour-and-a-half video, Lustig explains his reasoning. It just may make you change your answer to “one lump or two?”
