Whistle-Blowing Nuclear Plant Manager Sues Over Firing, Claiming Retaliation

A former manager at a nuclear power generating facility in California says he was fired because he brought up safety concerns regarding labor issues at the plant. Now he’s suing, claiming emotional distress and retaliation.

The Orange County Register reports the company won’t comment on pending legislation, but a spokesman said it doesn’t tolerate retaliation, and fires those who retaliate against others for bringing up concerns.

The manager said his supervisor told him to keep questions about the workers’ safety quiet. He then complained to the National Regulatory Commission, and his lawsuit says employees were told they shouldn’t have complained to him.

The commission reportedly fielded complaints of a “culture of cover-up” at the plant, with safety violations and claims of shortcuts in testing new generators.
