No NFL Season Could Clip The Chicken Wing Industry

Don’t buy that 780-count of wet naps just yet: If the NFL lockout drags on and results in no season this year, the chicken wing industry could suffer massively, a producer of the game-day snack favorite says.

Those in the industry have already seen a big drop in prices, and Joe Sanderson of Sanderson Farms Inc says the lack of an NFL season would make things even worse.

“It would kill wings, it would be terrible on wings,” Sanderson said at the Reuters Global Food and Agriculture Summit last week.

Without fans huddled around TVs or cheering on games at sports bars, wholesale chicken prices will suffer even more. They’ve already taken a hit this year, after a saturation of too many chickens on the lots, Reuters reports.

Sanderson, the largest supplier of chicken wings to foodservice companies, did so well last year, they couldn’t keep up. No professional football would mean a certain dip.

“It would be very bad for chicken wings and I do not know to what extent it would be bad for other products they sell in those watering holes or sports bars. It would not be good, I’d tell you that,” Sanderson said. On a personal note, he would also just be bummed out.

“I’d die,” he joked of a possible future without football.
