Fewer Than 5 Percent Of New Jobs Went To Women

Not only are women not making as much as men with equal education, but employers are filling hardly any new jobs with females.

McClatchy relays Labor Department figures that found women were given only 47,000 of the 984,000 jobs created between January 2010 and January 2011.

Says the co-president of the National Women’s Law Center:

“The improvements in the overall employment picture obscure what’s happening to women. In fact, women have lost ground since the recovery began.”

At least women suffered less than men when it came to getting canned. Seven out of 10 job losses during the economic downturn were suffered by men. A senior economist at the Center for American Progress says the pitifully low amount of recent female hires makes sense:

“If I get hit harder than you do, it does make sense that my recovery should be more dramatic. That’s just logical. The way this recession played out, there was this gendered impact across a wide variety of industries, and I think that’s what you’re seeing coming back.”

Do you think there’s sexism at play in the hiring pattern, or is it strict economics?
