Mazda Recalls 65,000 Cars… Over Spider Webs

We’ve heard of bananas in the tailpipe and sugar in the gas tank, but “spiders in the evaporative canister vent line” is a new one for us. And yet, it’s the reason Mazda is recalling 65,000 Mazda6 cars in North America.

According to NHTSA, the recall of certain 2009 and 2010 model year Mazda6 vehicles came about because a “certain type of spider [the Yellow Sac spider] may weave a web in the evaporative canister vent line and this may cause restriction in the line. If this occurs, the fuel tank pressure may become excessively negative when the emission control system works to purge the vapors from the canister.”

Ultimately, the stress on the fuel tank could result in a crack, possibly leading to fuel leaks and increased risk of fire.

Mazda knows of 20 cases of this spider-related problem.

“Why it chose the Mazda6 over any other vehicle I’m not sure,” said a company rep, who couldn’t help but add, “Apparently, the spider likes to go zoom zoom.”

To fix the problem, dealers will inspect and clean the canister vent line in the recalled vehicles. A spring will be installed to prevent this spider from entering the line.

The recall notices will go out later this month. Owners of Mazda6s can contact the company directly at 1-800-222-5500.
