Toyota Recalls 2.17 Million Cars, NHTSA Closes Investigation

At the request of regulators, Toyota is recalling an additional 2.17 million cars dating back to 2003 to deal with concerns over stuck gas pedals that could lead to out-of-control acceleration. And with that, it looks like NHTSA, the National Highway Transportation Administration, has shut the books on the unintended acceleration issue.

The recalls are to do things like add clips to floor mats to make sure they don’t get stuck under the pedal.

The models in the latest recall are:

2007 Model Year GS 300 and GS 350 All-Wheel Drive vehicles
2006 and early 2007 RX 330, RX 350, and RX 400hs
2004 through 2006 Highlander and Highlander HVs
2003 through 2009 4Runners
2008 through 2011 Lexus LX 570s
2006 through 2010 RAV4s

Affected owners will receive notices in the mail.

The agency pored over “more than 400,000 pages of Toyota documents to determine whether the scope of its recalls for pedal entrapment was sufficient,” said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland in a prepared statement. “As a result of the agency’s review, NHTSA asked Toyota to recall these additional vehicles, and now that the company has done so, our investigation is closed.”
