Con Ed Reverses Employee's Decision, Allows Gay Couple To Change Name On Electric Bill

On Friday, we brought you the story of John, who had recently married another man in Vermont and who had no trouble having his last name changed on his bank statement, his phone bill, his driver’s license — everything except his Con Ed electric bill.

To recap, John had gone into the Con Ed office in Brooklyn with his new license and his latest Con Ed bill. He also had a copy of his Vermont marriage certificate, which the electric company employee told him was not valid and that John’s last name could not be changed.

But now John writes to tell Consumerist:

I have just been informed that the name on my Con Edison account has been updated to conform with my legal name. Apparently, Con Ed has thought twice about rejecting my same-sex marriage certificate as “not legal.”

This does not erase the fact that I was subjected to illegal discrimination. I have no plans to withdraw my New York State Division of Human Rights discrimination complaint.
