As we told you earlier today, our brethren at Consumers Union have launched a public awareness campaign to alert consumers about the risks of the proposed sale of NBC Universal to Comcast. And as part of this campaign, CU’s Cable Constrictor moving billboard wended its way around Capitol Hill this morning.
CU’s policy counsel Parul Desai was on hand as the Constrictor — carrying the message “Don’t Constrict Choice. Reject The Comcast Buyout Of NBC” — made its way through the streets of D.C. (That’s her, along with CU advocate Michelle Schaefer in the picture below.)
Ms. Desai also took the time to write a piece for HuffPo (in which she mentions Comcast’s Worst Company In America victory).
The deep concerns about the proposed deal are about more than size. It would create a media conglomerate of incredible power and reach. Left to its own devices, Comcast/NBC could manage and manipulate the creation and delivery of entertainment, news, and information to its liking. And Comcast/NBC would be free to charge competitors higher prices to access its programming. Inevitably, those costs would be passed on to consumers.
As we mentioned earlier, if you want to add your voice to those opposed to the NBC/Comcast deal, please go to SayNoToComcastNBC.com and send your concerns straight to the FCC.
