I checked out that recertified Nintendo DS at Newegg. The only reviews for the recertified models are pretty negative. Damaged units, heavy wear and tear, as well as gunk and such nobody bothered to clean up.
I point this out because I’ve always had great experiences with Newegg, and I find this very odd (as well as odd if Nintendo handled the recertification).
