Costumed Sea Creatures Occupy NYC BP Station

A gaggle of costumed sea creatures plan to occupy the SoHo BP station in NYC tonight at 6pm to protest the company’s response to the oil spill. However, while the threat of makeshift sea turtles descending on Houston and Lafeyette is wonderful to contemplate, because BP stations are independently-owned, only the local business owner will be harmed by the disruption in commerce. Media points against BP will be harder to score. This particular station is a mecca for taxi cab drivers in the area, who will most likely find any difficulties in getting gas on a busy holiday weekend night to be less than hilarious. UPDATE: Local news coverage:

Here is a writeup of their proposed activities:

Hit BP… Come costumed… Enjoy! This could really be something.

CODE PINK CALLS ALL SEA CREATURES, FISHERPEOPLE AND OTHER LOVERS OF CLEAN WATER

One hundred and eighty dead sea turtles have washed onto Louisiana`s shore, representing a small fraction of the huge animal populations dying in BPs oil slick. The fishing industry in the Gulf is decimated, and with hurricane season coming, there is a significant risk the coast will be battered by a large hurricane or tropical storm bearing a toxic, oily load.

The time to do a comprehensive assessment of the damage and begin a massive cleanup was a month ago, and we are still waiting. BP has covered up the spill, withheld information, blocked government action, and prevented access necessary for scientists to design a response. BP made $5.5 BILLION in profits in the first three months this year- let’s demand an end to the rape and plunder of our planet.

Now is the moment to hold BP accountable and then go the next step–put an end to offshore drilling and build a 21st century energy system based on renewable sources instead of dirty oil! No more exemptions from environmental laws, no more liability caps to protect BP, and no federal bailout for polluters!

ITS TIME FOR BP TO STOP BUSINESS AS USUAL AND CLEAN UP THE GULF.
WE CORDIALLY INVITE YOU TO HELP REDIRECT THE COMPANY.

At 6 pm on the Friday before Memorial Day, as the good citizens of New York gather to gas up for a three day weekend, we will direct their business AWAY from BP.

Please join us. Dress up as your favorite sea creature or mermaid (or carry signs, stuffed animals, etc). Bring your righteous anger and your friends. (Ideas: BP Spills, BP Kills, British Polluter, Cap Oil Wells Not Liability, etc)

**** important additional information ****

If you would like to avoid interactions with police, please stay on the public sidewalk edging the gas station. If you would like to wear
a costume or risk arrest (by helping block the gas pumps more or less aggressively), or can help with props, please RSVP to Sally Newman at scnewman@gmail.com [1] with your interest.

Gotta shut down these polluters.
