British Airways Gets Trashy, Plans To Start Using Garbage For Fuel

Because we’ll always make garbage and we may not always be able to make jet fuel, British Airways announced today that they’ve partnered with biofuel company Solena Group to begin using fuel converted from waste materials in 2014.

B.A. admits that it will initially only be using a small amount of biofuel — about 2% of their current total fuel usage at London’s Heathrow Airport. But that it hopes to ramp that up over time to 10% of their total full usage for their entire fleet.

Over the next four years, Solena will be building a plant in the London area that would use 500,000 tons of garbage to create 16 million gallons of “green” jet fuel for the airline.
