Toys R Us Charges You $10 More For Game With Bonus 'Free' T-Shirt

5303 views

Brent snapped these photos of sales displays for Carnival Games for Wii. The store is charging $30 for the game by itself, but $40 for the game with a bonus "free" t-shirt.

Um... the pictures show the "free" T-Shirt cost $10 more... or am I just missing something?

user-pic

It looks to me like you've got it switched around. The free t-shirt game is $10 more than the one without the t-shirt.

Trying to make a fight where there isn't one. Bad consumer!

user-pic

rrrmmm... I'm seeing the game with a shirt as being $40 and the game with no shirt being $30.

Am I confused?

user-pic

It could be because the t-shirt is most likely too tacky to wear. Although... you could always use it as a cleaning cloth....

user-pic

wow. what am i looking at here?

user-pic

Hmm, I think the story here is the "Free T-Shirt" costs $10.

user-pic

@coan_net: That's what I see, Phil must be struggling...

user-pic

No, the title of this post clearly says "Toy's R Us" charges you $10 more for game if you don't want bonus T-shirt" when the photo's show the shirtless game retailing for $10 less then the game w/shirt.

user-pic

Yeah - the article is wrong - the pics show the shirt game is $40 & without the shirt it's $30..... so the shirt is $10. nothing to see here folks, move along... I think someone with a camera phone got a little trigger happy but they stumbled upon a big fat non-story (sorry Brent!)

user-pic

Perhaps comsumerist.com should take a second look at this.

user-pic

I think the point is that they charge you ten dollars more for a "free" t-shirt.

user-pic

Is it a real t-shirt or a t-shirt for your game character?

user-pic

it should read 'free shirt costs 10$ more'

user-pic

Used to manage a Blockbuster Video and we were required to run the following special:

2-liter soda: $1.20
2-liter soda and bag of microwavable popcorn: $.99

Never could figure that out.

user-pic

wow... in a little hurry to publish this post, were we? ;)

The real story here is that the FREE t-shirt costs $10

user-pic

@desertdust:

That WOULD be a good point if that was the point. I'm sure it will BECOME the point when they get around to editing the article.

user-pic

@coan_net: Pretty much exactly what you're seeing. They should be the same price, but they're charging you $10 for the "free" item. I've seen this on food products too, they have a special bonus size that's X% "bigger for free" and the store has the price marked up compared to the same "size" without the free bonus.

user-pic

@bornonbord: What you say is true: Yeah, I think the message of this is messed up. It looks like they're charging $10 MORE for the "free shirt" than $10 if you don't want the shirt.

user-pic

@bornonbord: What you say is true: I see it that way also.

Game with shirt = $40.
Game with no shirt = $30.

user-pic

@SWBLOOPERS:
That happens at some fast food places. I never order a drink, but sometimes the value meal is cheaper than a sandwich and a side.

user-pic

Probably was released with a free shirt, and then the re-order titles were at a lower price, but without the shirt and they haven't retagged the older ones still on the shelf. Retailers typically get price protection on video game so when the maker lowers the price on a game like this they get the difference back on any titles they still have in stock. Toys R us is just being lazy. Probably.

user-pic

@lotussix: I've noticed the same thing, honestly. It seems like most of the writing at Consumerist is great, but once a week, or maybe once every two weeks, I'll run into something that's poorly written, not thought out properly, etc. When that happens, it's usually a piece by Phil.

user-pic

@lotussix: Shit happens. No need to insult the editors of a publication provided at no cost to you.

user-pic

@hillsrovey: The article heading is wrong, but the point of the story is still correct. They're charging $10 more for the game with a FREE T-shirt, which, I'm sure, is the point of this post.

user-pic

Um... do you not think before you post? Take a look at everything you just said.

There's barely-true sensationalist headlines, and then there's dead wrong, borderline stupid.

user-pic

@Smashville_can haz star???:

Except .... it's not troling when it's largely true.

user-pic

@Cant_stop_the_rock:
Except the "free" t-shirt is just as made up as the -10 dollar t-shirt. the game is 30 without it, 40 with it. it says "w/shirt" not "with free shirt." Truly, nothing to see here.

user-pic

@OmniZero:
where does it say it's "free"?

user-pic

@treimel:
My bad, I see the sticker now.

user-pic

Consumerist, it is seriously time to either hire a proofreader, or start paying the one you have. I love this website but it's full of typos, and this is just getting ridiculous.

user-pic

@Knippschild: uh oh. the philphans are out in force. i'm not insulting all the editors. MOST of the editors and posts are good.

user-pic

@treimel: It's trolling when it's a totally garbage post. He can just as easily e-mail Phil and tell him he fucked up.

user-pic

@Smashville_can haz star???: i can't hear you, you have the editor's nuts in your mouth.

wow, a picture of a kitten and a beg for the elusive forum star in the style of 4chan. and calling someone a troll. how original.

i know this isn't a new site, but having headlines that match the story/situation would be nice.

user-pic

@lotussix: Most people use their eyes to read what's on a computer screen and not their ears. Just saying.

user-pic

@Kogenta: OK, but did you notice the text of the article next to the photos is saying something entirely different than what you just said?

user-pic

@Smashville_can haz star???:

I agree it's a totally garbage post... wait, oh you meant Lotus's comment, didn't you? really, I get the Code and all that, but really, when the actual post is just 100% wring, I just don't see how any of that applies.

user-pic

@Shadowman615: Yea the text makes absolutely no sense.

user-pic

@lotussix: Philphans? seriously? I don't care if it was Phil, Ben, Meg, Chris or Jesus Christ who writes the article. I don't pay much attention to the author, I just read the content.

I'm a fanboy of no one. Nice try though. Let's stop being childish against anyone who disagrees with you and calls you out on it.

user-pic

@RonDiaz: The headline is right and the pictures match up, it's an error in the article text. The free t-shirt is not quite free, there's still a manufacturing and shipping cost associated with it, hence why it's more.

user-pic

Nobody mentioned that this game SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS and isn't worth a dime with or without a "free" shirt.

Technically it's a "bonus" shirt which doesn't necessarily mean free.

user-pic

@The Cheat:
Well, the sticker on the box does say "free" t-shirt, so there's that.

user-pic

@Geekybiker:

This is exactly it. The game was $40 at release with no t-shirt. This is an old, old game. I enjoyed it though.

user-pic

@Knippschild: wait, are you the pot or the kettle in this one?

user-pic

@dragonfire81: I've bought music before that came with a "free" t-shirt... and it really was free. Advertising something as "free" and then demanding $10 for it is false advertising.

user-pic

I emailed Phil, and he says that it's been fixed.
i guess Gawker's cache is failing.
