Toys R Us Charges You $10 More For Game With Bonus 'Free' T-Shirt
Brent snapped these photos of sales displays for Carnival Games for Wii. The store is charging $30 for the game by itself, but $40 for the game with a bonus "free" t-shirt.

That WOULD be a good point if that was the point. I'm sure it will BECOME the point when they get around to editing the article.
@coan_net: Pretty much exactly what you're seeing. They should be the same price, but they're charging you $10 for the "free" item. I've seen this on food products too, they have a special bonus size that's X% "bigger for free" and the store has the price marked up compared to the same "size" without the free bonus.
@bornonbord: What you say is true: Yeah, I think the message of this is messed up. It looks like they're charging $10 MORE for the "free shirt" than $10 if you don't want the shirt.
@bornonbord: What you say is true: I see it that way also.
Game with shirt = $40.
Game with no shirt = $30.
@SWBLOOPERS:
That happens at some fast food places. I never order a drink, but sometimes the value meal is cheaper than a sandwich and a side.
Probably was released with a free shirt, and then the re-order titles were at a lower price, but without the shirt and they haven't retagged the older ones still on the shelf. Retailers typically get price protection on video game so when the maker lowers the price on a game like this they get the difference back on any titles they still have in stock. Toys R us is just being lazy. Probably.
@lotussix: I've noticed the same thing, honestly. It seems like most of the writing at Consumerist is great, but once a week, or maybe once every two weeks, I'll run into something that's poorly written, not thought out properly, etc. When that happens, it's usually a piece by Phil.
@hillsrovey: The article heading is wrong, but the point of the story is still correct. They're charging $10 more for the game with a FREE T-shirt, which, I'm sure, is the point of this post.
@Cant_stop_the_rock:
Except the "free" t-shirt is just as made up as the -10 dollar t-shirt. the game is 30 without it, 40 with it. it says "w/shirt" not "with free shirt." Truly, nothing to see here.
@Knippschild: uh oh. the philphans are out in force. i'm not insulting all the editors. MOST of the editors and posts are good.
@treimel: It's trolling when it's a totally garbage post. He can just as easily e-mail Phil and tell him he fucked up.
@Smashville_can haz star???: i can't hear you, you have the editor's nuts in your mouth.
wow, a picture of a kitten and a beg for the elusive forum star in the style of 4chan. and calling someone a troll. how original.
i know this isn't a new site, but having headlines that match the story/situation would be nice.
@lotussix: Most people use their eyes to read what's on a computer screen and not their ears. Just saying.
@Kogenta: OK, but did you notice the text of the article next to the photos is saying something entirely different than what you just said?
I agree it's a totally garbage post... wait, oh you meant Lotus's comment, didn't you? really, I get the Code and all that, but really, when the actual post is just 100% wring, I just don't see how any of that applies.
@lotussix: Philphans? seriously? I don't care if it was Phil, Ben, Meg, Chris or Jesus Christ who writes the article. I don't pay much attention to the author, I just read the content.
I'm a fanboy of no one. Nice try though. Let's stop being childish against anyone who disagrees with you and calls you out on it.
@RonDiaz: The headline is right and the pictures match up, it's an error in the article text. The free t-shirt is not quite free, there's still a manufacturing and shipping cost associated with it, hence why it's more.
This is exactly it. The game was $40 at release with no t-shirt. This is an old, old game. I enjoyed it though.
@dragonfire81: I've bought music before that came with a "free" t-shirt... and it really was free. Advertising something as "free" and then demanding $10 for it is false advertising.

Um... the pictures show the "free" T-Shirt cost $10 more... or am I just missing something?
