Pizza Hut Manager Attacks Old Man

17956 views

A 27-year-old Pizza Hut manager in Winnipeg, Manitoba, went bonkers last Friday and dragged a 76-year-old customer to the ground over a payment dispute. The manager was arrested, and the customer returned the next afternoon to dine, because he is afraid of nothing.

That sounds like something that would happen in Florida, not Canada. Oh wait, here's a more Canadian-sounding bit from the Winnipeg Free Press article:

"I'm very angry," Rose said Saturday afternoon, fiddling with napkins in his hands and trying to hold back tears. "I went to a dance later that night and I didn't even enjoy myself."

This story was seriously challenging my Canadian stereotypes... until the last quote. And then suddenly everything was right with the world. And I was on the floor laughing.

"I went to a dance later that night and I didn't even enjoy myself."

Sounds like middle school to me.

user-pic

taking the matter seriously.

I wish companies would find a new line to use.

user-pic

At least... "Pizza Hut takes these matters very seriously..."

user-pic

The old mad probably tried to pay in pennies. Really though who drags a 76 year old man to the ground? The old man must have been something to piss someone off like that, especially in Canada.

user-pic

In today's paper, I read that a couple in Mississippi was upset they had to wait too long for a KFC order and sat outside and waited for the employee to leave. The coupon jumped the employee and started beating on him/her and were arrested on assault charges.

Crazy people are crazy. Regardless of region.

@squinko - has 50 followers, what more do I need?!: Alas, Kevin Bacon's heroic crusade was for naught.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: The coupon jumped the employee? Wow. Those online discount coupons are sure getting out of hand.

user-pic

Warehouse 13 is on the case.

user-pic

@squinko - has 50 followers, what more do I need?!: You mean to tell me that junior highs don't have dances anymore? Or high schools?

I hated them and never went, but I am curious.

user-pic

@MostlyHarmless: One time a Arbys coupon lured me into a dark ally with promises of apple turn-overs and then mugged me. Live and learn.

user-pic

@TheOrtega: "I'm so hungry; I could eat at Arbys."

user-pic

and the customer returned the next afternoon to dine.

An early bird deal is an early bird deal, assault or not.

user-pic

@MostlyHarmless: Why the heck did I type coupon? Well, kudos to me for spelling it right, but why did I type coupon?

user-pic

@rpm773: And if it were me, I definitely would have been back jitterbugging with the ladies by 6:30pm.

user-pic

@edesignway: Yeah. Domino's would only take these matters kind of seriously.

user-pic

Sorry, but I have to get the whole story. What exactly did the old man due that the manager jumped on him?

user-pic

Dragged over the ground? That wouldn't happen to be the lawn he yelled at that damn kids to keep off?

user-pic

@rpm773: Fuck. Now I've got "ji-ji-ji-jitterbug" running through my head.

user-pic

The only question I have is: Lindy Hop or the original Charleston?

user-pic

@Skankingmike: We don't give a shit.

Is it too much to ask for an honest one?

user-pic

Woo, score one for Winnipeg! To put this in to perspective, we've had a really shitty summer so everyone is on edge a bit with winter breathing down our necks. The geese are flying over, mocking us with their calls.

user-pic

That's Winnipeg for you. *shudders*

Fake continuation of article:

A witness said the manager was upset because the customer refused to accept Pizza Hut's new name "The Hut."

"That's just stupid," said Rose. "This is just like when Kentucky Fried Chicken changed its name to KFC."

At that point the manager became enraged, witnesses said.

user-pic

@TheOrtega: I'm sure at least somebody has anger issues in Canada. Roid rage, maybe?

user-pic

@G.O.B.: Come on!: Until it hit the Internet, then Dominos' CEO would get a webcam and a teleprompter together and film a badly recited apology.

user-pic

@twophrasebark: I imagine it's their buffet style lunch specials.

user-pic

@MostlyHarmless: You mean the "because he's not afraid of anything" part? That was removed from the article, its only on the tidbit on the front page for some reason.

user-pic

That manager is lucky he didn't do serious damage to the guy, at 76 you can easily break bones by falling let alone being shoved. I have to seriously wonder about people who beat on children or the elderly.

user-pic

@silver-bolt: I have no idea what you are talking about :)

user-pic

I sure would like to know more about the payment dispute that started this thing.

I really hate how they skimmed over it - of course the manager over reacted and should never have touched him, but would be nice to know what set him off.

That is for the payment, did the old guy take out a bill and write "The managers wife is a good lay" or something and hand it over as payment?

Of course I'm not trying to stick up for the manager, but feel there is an important part of the story missing.

user-pic

there's go to be more to this story. obviously nothing that would justify attacking an old man, but am i the only one that feels like they're only hearing half the story? how can someone really be that crazy just to attack an old man unprovoked?

user-pic

@MostlyHarmless:

The article could have at least thrown in a Canadian tuxedo joke when referencing Mr. Rose's later activities.

user-pic

The old man deserved it. He had clearly just run Pizza Hut's goalie.

user-pic

@CFinWV: is it better to be beat on than beat off?

in this case.... prolly.

user-pic

@eaglearcher: Does it matter? The old guy didn't need to "due" anything.

user-pic

Is it my imagination or does the guy look like Don Imus? That alone might be grounds for an attack.

user-pic

@squinko - has 50 followers, what more do I need?!: I would attempt to clarify, but we'll just leave it as is. It's not exactly important. Apologies for any confusion.

user-pic

@coan_net: If you read the comments, someone claiming to be a witness said the man pre-paid for his food.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: At first I thought you were using it in the colloquial sense, but then I remembered that "coupon" is slang for "face" in Scotland, not a person. Well, at least if all of the Irvine Welsh that I have read is to be believed.

user-pic

@eaglearcher: From the comments:

Ed Rose is somewhat of a fixture in Southdale Square. I worked at another restaurant in the area over ten years ago, and can still remember the rude behavior Mr. Rose would exhibit towards my co-workers and I.

Impolite customers are part of the job, but when the same one shows up every day, stays for four-to-six hours, and argues for the same non-existent discounts, something has to give. (thabdogg)

user-pic

@squinko - has 50 followers, what more do I need?!: No, he could have done stuff. Like yell at the manager, threaten the manager, spit on the manager, etc.

user-pic

@shockwaver: "Man, I've had a shitty summer this year, I'd better take it out by assaulting an old person."
