Beware of the Samsung 24" LCD 1080p HDTV Monitor. This "Ships from and sold by TigerDirect." And it is 1920x1200, which is suitable for use as a computer monitor, but is not an exact fit for high definition TV. Either the HDTV broadcast picture will be cut off in part, or letterboxed (for widescreen programs) or pillarboxed (for standard definition programs). If your significant use will be to watch TV programs, I recommend going with a true 16:9 screen, such as 1920x1080 (which can also work fine on a computer, but some software may stretch or squish things).
@Kimaroo - No Stars Upon Thars: I want Classical Piano Hero. My band can be Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Paderewski, and Gershwin.
@henneko: I would buy that TONIGHT..
Weird Al is my hero. (My real hero, not plastic guitar/fake/button pushing hero.)
@Oranges w/ Cheese needs guidance: After "Rocks the 80s" I am cautiously dubious about things that come out by these people.
The real Guitar Hero games are really fun.. but that 80s one totally killed my "blind loyalty" to those people.
@TVarmy: I am tempted by those as well.. for my cellphone and my Ipod Touch.
Great price too.. I've just never heard of that store before.
@Kimaroo - No Stars Upon Thars: Man-Flute™ Hero.
Fun for the whole family. Well, half the family.
(and boy if the "Why don't you just get a real one and learn how to actually play that instead of wasting your time with that overpriced Hero junk" statement ever applied, it's for this!)
@Trai_Dep: By "for real" do you mean: with a real record, or do you mean: a turn table hooked into an Ipod which isn't really all that real.
@Trai_Dep: "why don't kids just learn how to spin for real"
Instead of wasting time learning how to spin someone else's music, why don't you learn how to write and play your own?
And while you're at it, get off my lawn you good for nothing lazy kid! ;-)
@TVarmy: i have a pair of bluetooth headphones i got a few years ago with silicone ear loops...
not the most comfortable, nowhere near $100 headphones comfortable... but much better than $10 walmart headphones
@Kimaroo - No Stars Upon Thars: I'm flexible on the vinyl vs digital debate. Although most the DJs I've seen use laptops, not iPod decks.
There's something visceral about two Technics and slabs of vinyl that resonates. I'm lucky: I have friends with both setups, so I've been able to embarrass myself on both.
Although, on a price-point basis, I can see the iPod setup being a good starter for those budding DJs.
@GMFish: I agree, but also think the difference between getting a real instrument and schooling is a bigger hurdle than DJing (although I could be wrong).
Has anyone tried to come up with a computer-based music learning tool that's fun? As horrifying a concept that may be to purists, it seems it'd be a neat half-step towards opening up the musician field to more people. Much better than the Hero series, which seems to teach very little in this regard.
@Trai_Dep: Ummm? About Weird Al?
Because if that's why you said that, then, I must tell you that he's a musical genius.. and a genius in general. (He has a degree in Architecture, and never made lower than an A in his entire school career.) He doesn't just do parodies.. he does original songs as well. He's a true artist and carefully crafts his songs.
As far as his parodies go, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
@Trai_Dep: "I agree, but also think the difference..."
I was actually kidding. Back about 20 years ago old timers complained that young people were "sampling" and scratching rather then learning how to write and play music for real.
Now people are seriously complaining that young people are too lazy to really learn how to scratch, or spin as it's apparently called nowadays.
Irony is dead.
I tried out DJ Hero over the weekend. The controls take some getting used to, but by the third song, I was getting my groove on.
I hesitate to buy it though, as I only just recently picked up Rock Band 2. I doubt my wife would appreciate yet another bulky pseudo-instrument taking up space in our living room.
@GMFish: I can see an argument being made that all those hours spend learning how to play, say, a Rockstar guitar over a real one might be an opportunity missed. Or spinning for real versus a Fisher-Price version.
Totally agree with you on saying that spinning isn't an art form in its own right, btw :D
@Kimaroo - No Stars Upon Thars: I was defending the poor, oft-maligned Man-Flute™, not attacking Weird Al. :p
@yagisencho: As a wife myself, let me thank you.
I currently have a Guitar Hero World Tour band set in my living room, and two Guitar Hero guitars, and a microphone in my bedroom.
This is what happens when you live in a one bedroom apartment, I guess : /
