Coming Soon: Family Guy Windows 7 Infomercial (Sort Of)
Is it s sponsored special? A glorified infomercial? We're not sure, but on November 8, the Griffins of "Family Guy" will be hosting their own Windows 7 launch party of sorts, in the form of a half-hour special sponsored by Microsoft.
Shameless whoring or the greatest product placement ever? We'll have to wait until November to see.
There will be no commercial ad time, no network promotions, and no commercial breaks-just a 30-minute Windows 7 trailer that somehow attempts to blend the operating system with show content in the style of the old Texaco Star Theater. MacFarlane and Borstein have teamed with Windows advertising agencies Universal McCann and Crispin, Porter + Bogusky to develop, write, and produce the half-hour special that will highlight the comedy duo's humor with original animation, live-action performances of Family Guy's most memorable musical numbers, comedy sketches, and surprise celebrity guests.

@Maous: Odd.. It didn't embed the video, atleast not on my screen.
Anywho, that's the original video that this was dubbed over with.
@BillyDee_CT: Then you fail at life. This should be good. You can't be against an extra episode for family guy. And since there is nothing wrong with windows, who cares if it is the sponsor.
Odds are you just upset apple didn't think of it first.
@strathmeyer: Sorry Corporate, but this is corporate whoring at its best... right up there with the Simpsons playboy spread. Completely and utterly tasteless. The Simposns Mapple episode on the other hand was hilarious.
@radleyas: Slurs aside, no, Seth McFarlane is a proud Mac user. The Windows promotion comes with a boatload of cash, no doubt.
@Joeb5:
wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh-windows/386!
Sometime I need to write the lyrics down for the songs in that video. I can then just start singing them to drown out the next 'doze lover that starts talking to me.
@zimmi88:
The word is "shill." There's no R in it, nor is there a C.
I am glad that you used it to mean what it actually means, though.
@fantomesq: I agree. It's pure product whoring and I even think it's worse than Marge on the cover of Playboy. That existed somewhat outside the show - this is blatant. Microsoft waved a check and they practically begged.
@Homerjay is utterly alone.: Long words/sites are truncated. It's not smart enough to deal with hyphens.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Blatant whoring. The guy has eighteen fucking shows out so I'm sure money isn't an issue for him. If he is desperate for money or something and needed it to take care of his dying grandmother then I would be more understanding of the situation. I guess the money MS is giving him will offset the loss of respect and maybe a few fans.
While I'm not a fan of MS, I would totally do this. Then again, I'm just some random dude with a family and extra cash would make some things a little easier.
@Willow01: What better way to get money for nothing? If you don't have to pay animators to draw new stuff that leaves more money for the producers. Especially McFarlane, as he does a lot of the voice work himself.
Now if they actually use that Dire Straits song in the episode I'll laugh my *ss off. But I'm not impressed with this marketing effort. I guess I'm still waiting for the "WOW" that was supposed to have started 3 years ago...
@Greasy Thumb Guzik: I didn't realize that Fred and Barney worked at a Wazzu watering hole serving "Pullman Water."
Since I don't watch the show (or any of the other cartoons on Fox), I do not anything about it. But to answer the big question of whether or not it's an infomercial or not, I'd say if it's being scheduled in the same time slot as the show normally broadcasts (and from the looks of it, it is), then it's whoring. If it was airing at 2am on one of the shopping networks, then it's an infomercial and not whoring.
@pecan 3.14159265: Meh - content creators are faced with fewer ways to make a buck as ad revenues go down... particularly on the old network stations.
I think they ought to run flyspeck ads (those ones they usually use to tell you about other shows on the bottom of the screen)throughout their entire broadcasts... the channels have to make some money on their programming somehow... it's not the BBC.
The haters also assume that Microsoft just drove up to MacFarlane's office and dumped piles of hundreds onto his desk. Chances are Fox Broadcasting (which owns the show) said, "Hey, Seth! The good people at Microsoft are going to pay us an S-ton of money to do something with Windows 7 and Family Guy. So you guys go think of something".
Hopefully it will be tongue-in-cheek enough that the writers can keep their dignity (think 30 Rock and Verizon phones/Snapple). At the end of the day, you gotta pay bills.
@nstonep: Besides...doesn't Brian seem like the kind of guy that owns an mac? In fact...didn't he actually have a mac in the cartoon (I can't remember).
@TechnoDestructo: Wait, wait, wait...CC Lemon, Japan's gift to the world, is hocked by The Simpsons? Now I love the stuff even more! Of course, I originally loved it because it has tons of sugar. The Simpsons is just icing on the CC Lemoncake.
I don't understand why everyone has such a problem. Yes, it's corporate whoring, but isn't Brian driving a Prius instead of some unnamed vehicle corporate whoring? Isn't every time some actor drinks a name brand beverage in a shot corporate whoring? I hope you didn't like 'I, Robot'. Or much of anything else for that matter.
This is just another business opportunity for both parties. Yay capitalism!
Windows 7 is a whole new bag of headaches. Run 64-bit windows 7 and try to print to a printer attached to a 32-bit XP machine. It's not too difficult for me (albeit highly unintuitive), but the average user is never going to figure this out:

I just lost all respect for MacFarlane and Borstein now :(
