Announcing The First Consumerist Meetup

3015 views

We're planning on having a Consumerist meetup in early November. Currently locking down a location in Manhattan, more details to come. Nothing fancy, just a chance to meet other readers and hang out with the writers from the site and have some drinks on us!

I know I'll be there.

And please bring that sign. That'd be awesome.

user-pic

Awww.. I wish I could go to that.. I'm pretty sure I won't be stumbling on any free airline tickets anytime soon.

user-pic

Can I get an autograph from the Captain?

user-pic

@Kimaroo - 20% More Kitty Added!: If you do, don't stub your toe!

And... mail one to me...

user-pic

I live about 2.5 hours from NYC, buttttt I have other stuff to do and people to see in the area, so maybe I can make it. How do I explain this to my friends, though? Yes, I'm going to meet some people I actually don't know, but have talked to a lot on the internet. At least it isn't WoW, I suppose...hahaha.

user-pic

Manhattan? That's in Tennessee, right? Right? aww :(

user-pic

@katstermonster: Oi! I've met up with a lot of folks from FFXI and WoW over the years and a lot of those good folks I have become really good and close friends with. :P

user-pic

@Taliskan: Haha not saying that I wouldn't thoroughly enjoy it...but I don't regularly make trips to the city, so it's kind of awkward to explain why I'm headed down for the day. I still feel as if the internet hasn't quite reached the point of being a fully acceptable way to meet people. Heh.

user-pic

@katstermonster: The same way I just had to explain to my family, "The reason I can't go out of town to go to my cousins wedding is that we already planned to be out of town to go to a gamer clan BBQ."

And then shrug.. a lot. And in my case, blame it on Mr. Aroo. A lot.

user-pic

@Laura Northrup: Let me beat Stevedave to it:

If I manage to get there, will there be a Kimaroo sized labcoat waiting for me?

user-pic

@Kimaroo - 20% More Kitty Added!: Eh, I have no shame. I've introduced people at my parties as "Hey everyone, this is John Doe, I found him on the Interwebs." I guess I've been socializing online for so many years that it no longer has a stigma to me.

user-pic

Consumerist should totally have a contest of some sort for 2 free plane tickets to NYC for the event! Well, because that's the only way I can afford to go.

user-pic

@h3llc4t has a slow work day: I can just imagine bringing random people to friends' parties and saying, "hey, look who I found on the tubes!"

user-pic

Can the meet up be held at Walmart? I would kill to have a picture of Ben and I having our receipt checked together.

user-pic

@h3llc4t has a slow work day: Well they kind of expect it from me, because Mr. Aroo is from the Australian interwebs.

user-pic

"Currently locking down a location in Manhattan, more details to come."

Which Starbucks will it be?

user-pic

I'd love to go but the trip is out of my budget range for the moment. Maybe next year. :(

user-pic

@Laura Northrup: Southwest. I live just outside of Hartford.

@h3llc4t has a slow work day: My friends aren't big online socializers, so it'd be a little out of place with them. Oh well!

user-pic

@calquist: In that case, maybe a photo of all of us could be posted on www.peopleofwalmart.com. That site just cracks me up.

user-pic

I see a lot of commenters from the Chicago area. If Ben & Meg don't want to come back here, perhaps we should have our own meetup. Maybe even at the same time, with some sort of newfangled webcam hookup through the tubes. Any of the Chicago commenters with me?

user-pic

Hmmm, depends on which weekend and whether Ben is going to spring for all of us to go ice skating at Rockafeller Center afterwards...I could be in NYC is 3 hours...2 if I drive really fast!

user-pic

Just remember, that Tuesday Nov 3 is Election Day and Nov 11 is Veterans Day.

user-pic

I'll be there with cowboy hat and Green LED nametag on. Please, do not feel intimidated by me. I enjoy meeting people, and if I go to something like this, I want to talk and be disturbed!

I hope it doesn't get cold there though. However would I stay warm?

thanks squinko

user-pic

@calquist: No Walmarts in manhattan. Sorry calquist!

user-pic

@GitEmSteveDave_IsWaving: I feel like I should say something about this image, but nothing is coming to mind.

user-pic

Hold it at Maloney & Porcelli, then all of the attendees can turn in "receipts" for compnay reimbursement [consumerist.com]

user-pic

is this to make up for not sending codes for the one year to consumerreports.org?

user-pic

@GitEmSteveDave_IsWaving: Hahaha. I knew you'd use it someday! I will finally give you that heart click I've been keeping from you.

user-pic

@JPropaganda: My mind can not even comprehend that.. No Walmarts?! I guess we will just need to relocate the meetup to Kansas City. I mean, who wouldn't want to visit a Missouri Wal-Mart?... :-\

user-pic

@JPropaganda: There is a kmart at Astor Place.

user-pic

@squinko - has 50 followers, what more do I need?!: That is so fantastic I can't even put it into words. Would someone get this commenter a star????

user-pic

Very interested in attending! Lock down that date and place asap!

user-pic

@humphrmi: Chicago is within driving range for me...and much more desirable a destination (to me) than NYC.

I also saw a hot dog joint on a documentary that sells some crazy milk shakes in the late night hours...I've been meaning to go get one.

user-pic

@Laura Northrup: Whoops, Southwest from my place to NYC. Yeah. You know what I mean. :)

user-pic

@humphrmi: We could do meet ups all over the country and be newfangled everywhere. I say there should be a left coast one too. Los Angeles? Represent? Anyone?

user-pic

Personally I think it should be had at the Pacific Standard in Park Slope/BK... but that's just me... just sayin'

user-pic

@Meg Marco: You could comment on its utter awesomeness.

user-pic

@dfens42: Where are you coming from? I'm about the same distance from the city. I'm a little east of Hartford, CT.

user-pic

Temptingggggggggg..... only an Amtrak hop for me in New England. But I suspect work/kid/other life stuff will take precedence. Plus I'd probably be the only grandmother there. ;-)
