Thermos Replaces Travel Mug That Lost Its Way

8523 views

Brent's excellent Thermos travel mug lost its rubber bottom somewhere in its travels, making it difficult to use. Instead of throwing it away, he contacted Thermos to see about a replacement part. He ended up having such a great experience that he had to write in and share what happened.

Just wanted to shout out some great customer service from Thermos. My
Thermos Travel Mug lost its rubber bottom, making it pretty unstable.
They're not that expensive, but I hate to throw away $19 of working
metal for lack of a $1 rubber bit. I emailed Thermos about getting a
replacement part. Jamie at Thermos replied and told me they didn't
have replacement parts available, but to send it in to warranty
repairs, and they see what could be done. I dropped it in the mail
and waited, hoping they'd ship it back with a new rubber bottom.
Nothing happened for a month, so I got in touch with Jamie again and
asked if they had it and what was going on. Jamie could find no
record of them having received it (thanks USPS! no tracking number of
course. Why spend $20 shipping something that costs $20?). She
talked to her supervisor, and they are now sending me a replacement
mug, no charge! That's way above and beyond. Anyway, great customer
service, and the Thermos Nissan mugs are the only ones that I've ever
had that didn't end up leaving coffee stains on all my white shirts.

Whether it was the postal service or Thermos themselves who lost Brent's mug, it was very kind of them to replace it, and earned them praise from an already loyal customer.

Good for Thermos... and next time, at least get delivery confirmation. It's not tracking, but it's at least evidence that it was delivered and isn't that expensive.

frankly had he used one of the usps one price boxes it would have cost him 4 or 5 bucks to ship. don't knock the usps, they seem to do a fine job getting you your bills every month.

user-pic

@Ronin-Democrat: I don't know what USPS you are talking about. The mail is almost invariably left on the stoop instead of put in the mail slot, so at least in theory the mail got from point A to point B and hopefully didn't get stolen or blown away.

user-pic

@Vandelay Import Export: I think we can assume that USPS didn't leave the mug on the front stoop of the company - I use usps 'click-n-ship' with the $5 flat rate boxes & free delivery confirmation often & have never had a problem....

Nice of the company to replace the mug!

@Vandelay Import Export: I don't know what USPS you are talking about. My mail is always put in the mail slot.

user-pic

@Ronin-Democrat: Probably more like $10-I don't think that mug could fit in the tiny flat rate box. Still, nice to see the company replaced it with no proof of it being sent.

user-pic

That's awesome. That makes me want to buy one of those mugs.

SEEEEE, companies??? See what happens when you do things right!?

user-pic

Is the picture the actual mug he has? Because if it is, I have that mug, and it's amazing! It keeps my coffee warm for hours.

user-pic

But how does it know to keep hot things hot and cold things cold?
What sort of evil genius witchcraft is this?!
(And: should Creationists stick to lukewarm coffee in paper cups, as the gods intended?)

PS: Yay, Thermos!

user-pic

@Ronin-Democrat: Isn't a delivery confirmation only about $.80 more at the USPS?

user-pic

I haven't owned a Thermos product in years (I think it's due to childhood memories of glass vacuum-bottle shards in my juice as a kid), but I need an insulated mug. I think I know exactly what I'm going to get now. Good job, Thermos!

@Vandelay Import Export: Some mail carriers are better than others. There's two that regularly work the route I'm on, and you can always tell who delivered the mail that day.

Carrier A (beloved by all) talks to residents, knows people by name, NEVER misfiles a letter in the wrong mailbox, and makes sure not to slip letters inside advertising fliers, even if the mailbox has several days of accumulated mail.

Carrier B...doesn't. When the delivery is sloppy, when letters are tucked inside ads, when you have to go knock on a neighbor's door to give them mail that was put in the wrong mailbox...long time residents have noticed a correlation between these incidents and when the tall, surly asian woman delivers the mail.

The very short, cute blond does a much better job, despite having to carry a step-stool with her to reach some of the higher mailboxes properly.

So even on the same route, you can get highly variable service. Don't knock the entire USPS for one bad employee.

@MostlyHarmless: My mail is sometimes put in my mail box; sometimes in my neighbor's mail box; and sometimes I receive my neighbor's mail. Our names are not even close. I think our mailman is literacy challenged but probably has an exemption under the ADA.

user-pic

Ok, you paid to send it in out of pocket and they are replacing it because they lost it.

Sadly I don't see this as amazing service. They should have just sent you the cheap part and avoided you spending a dime.

Had something similar with Thermos a few months ago. We got my sons Thermos water bottle with flip top lids. In the dishwasher, we lost the little rubber plug that seals the drinking spout. I called to see if I could buy a replacement plug and was instead sent a whole new lid.

When my son lost the whole bottle, there was no question that we would buy him another Thermos one after that.

I once bought a plastic insulated mug at a steep discount from a department store. It had an unconditional lifetime warranty. When it cracked, I found their phone number and called customer support. The person who answered acted as if I was the first person who ever called up for the warranty. The company sent me a replacement at no charge.

I once bought Jenaer glass Wagenfeld teapot in a Goodwill store for $3. The teapot was about $90 new but was missing a non-critical part. I tried to find the part on sale at the US branch, but they did not have it. I contacted the German parent company and asked if I could buy a replacement part, letting them know I bought it second hand. They shipped me a replacement part from Germany free of charge.

@Ronin-Democrat: I am not clear why everyone assumes the Post Office actually did not deliver it. It may be on someone's desk at Thermos and they just have not gotten to it yet.

I've never has a problem with the USPS.

@Corporate_guy:

Welcome to the 1910's. In today's culture, this *is* amazing service.

user-pic

@Buckler: Thermos bought up the Nissan Stainless line a few years back, GREAT products. I actually have been meaning to contact them regarding a problem cleaning under a silicone seal in my travel cups (I have two). This gives me more hope, thanks!

user-pic

I also had great customer service from Thermos. The last time I bought a coffee Thermos, I was annoyed that they all had flip top spouts for pouring. Convenient, but it acts as a heat leak, meaning that my coffee was inevitably tepid by the time I got around to drinking it.

I called to complain, and they sent me free of charge a regular non-spout lid in the mail within a week. Now my coffee is hot all day long.

user-pic

A trip to Harbor Freight , a $1.19 and fifteen minutes could have helped him as much. Not to say that Thermos didn't go above and beyond what was needed to do. I love their products. But In this day and age we as consumers need to learn to repair some things ourselves. To many people are leaving things up to manufacturers to do repairs that are simple and easy..there are many places on the internet that can show people how to make simple repairs on everyday items. Try googling a problem next time to save a lot of problems.. they might even learn something new WOW!

user-pic

I own one of these mugs. They are the best coffee mug ever made. They don't ever spill, and can be clipped on to things. Mine fell off the roof of my Durango at 70kph, and my coffee was just fine.

user-pic

@maruawe42: Yes! Thermos must have done the math and figured it's cheaper for them to send out whole new units in response to the few complaints they get than to source and stock parts. I guess it's good that their products generate so few complaints that the math works for them this way.

user-pic

I'm gonna get me one of these. It seems to be a great product, from a great company.

P.S. USPS Priority mail with delivery confirmation is just a little over $5, and works great..

user-pic

That is great, but I wish companies would keep extra parts on hand. Instead of being a good company by shipping a whole new mug at a cost to them, they could have sent the rubber part at a marginal cost to the buyer that lost it. That way, the mug would not wind up as trash and they could still be a good business. I hate throwing things away when one easily-replaced three-cent piece is all that's needed to repair it.

user-pic

Hooray! I just bought a Thermos travel coffee mug to replace the old one from Target that fell apart. I'll have to keep this in mind if the mug ever needs fixed.

user-pic

@feckingmorons: That's exactly what I was thinking. How many times has someone told you they never received the package only to "find it" later?

user-pic

@subsider34: It will tell you it left your post office, it will tell you it was delivered on the other end. It will not tell you where it is in between the way Fedex does, which is what I would consider tracking.

Though Fedex Ground is a lot less expensive, and provides full tracking.

user-pic

I love my Thermos! It is solidly built and keeps my water cold all day long. Well worth the $19.99 I paid for it.
