Sony Will Let Gamers Transfer Blu-ray Movies To PSP In November

3434 views

Sony announced a while back that it would boost its foundering PSP by allowing gamers to transfer copies of Blu-ray films to the handheld device — but only if they also own a PS3.

Now Sony is finally making good on the deal, announcing that "select releases" will be capable of pulling off the transfer, starting with "The Ugly Truth" in November.

From Sony's press release:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment America today announced an advancement to the Blu-ray format, whereby users can now transfer a Digital Copy of the movie directly from the Blu-ray Disc to their PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) systems via PlayStation®3 (PS3™). This new technology eliminates the need to include the PSP file on a separate DVD-ROM, packaged with the Blu-ray, which would normally contain the Digital Copy files. This feature will launch with the November 10th Blu-ray release of Godzilla and will be included on select releases going forward, including The Ugly Truth.

"Blu-ray is already known as the best way to watch movies at home, and now SPHE & SCEA are also making it the most convenient way to watch movies on the go," said Rich Marty, Vice President of New Business Development at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Marty continued, "This latest enhancement to Blu-ray and Digital Copy demonstrates the versatility of the format and its ability to deliver a multi-platform video experience. It also showcases the unique advantage that the PlayStation 3 brings to the Blu-ray consumer."

This is undoubtedly a boon for those who already own a PS3 and PSP, or PS3 owners who are planning on buying a PSP Go that won't play any of their Universal Media Disc movies. Especially since DVD-transferable digital copies of movies don't play on PSPs unless you download a sketchy, not-quite-legal converter program.

Yeah but its a feature that will likely only be on movies by Sony and its subsidiaries and really, Godzilla? If you want this to be something people would consider, you might want to pick movies people actually would want to buy.

user-pic

I really wish this worked for all existing and upcoming BD's, but I guess I can't complain since they don't do it at all now.

user-pic

Any bets on whether the "select releases" will be limited to low-definition versions of Catch-22? =P

user-pic

Is there a point to this?

First, how many people own a blu-ray that they really want to watch on the PSP's small, lower-than-1080p resolution screen?

Second, aren't blu-ray drives for the PC within the realm of affordability now? (certainly cheaper than a PS3, right?) And isn't there also ripping software that does for blu-rays, what DVD Shrink does for DVDs?

Third, how large is a digital copy of a movie in PSP format? Certainly can't be that large. Well under 1GB I bet. And they can't fit a PSP Digital Copy on a disc that holds 25GB or 50GB?

This is basically a solution looking for a problem.

user-pic

it's not going to get me to BUY any Blu-Rays i wouldn't have bought in the first place, but if it's available i'll certainly take advantage of it. My PSP has been collecting dust for about 2 years now.

user-pic

With a screen that size, would you really notice the difference between Blu-ray and DVD?

user-pic

does that mean i can borrow on netflix and transfer to PSP?

user-pic

@amuro98: I imagine that wanting to watch a movie on a PSP is similar to when I want to watch a movie/tv show on my Ipod.

I'm stuck waiting somewhere and there is CNN on a tv (if they have one at all.) Or there are only crappy makeup magazines.. Or car mags. Waiting at doctors or mechanics is annoying when you have nothing to do.

Or.. when hurricane Ike knocks out your power for longer than a week and you'd do anything to watch anything on whatever size screen somebody's got.

I think the point is that they're saying you won't have to buy those little PSP disks to watch movies anymore. You can buy a movie you like one time instead of twice.

user-pic

It seems lately Sony is trying to do anything to get people interested in a PSP which obviously it is not working.

Sony has failed at everything lately - PSP, Bluray, and the PS3.

user-pic

@amuro98:
For a PSP screen any movie would easily be under 200mb.

user-pic

Thanks.... I guess?

Just let me convert my UMD games to a PSPGo already. Nobody gives a damn about BD movies on the PSP.

user-pic

I think this is going to sink Sony. Apple now has the ammo to do the same vis-a-vis the iPod, and Macs as well. If Apple adds Blu-Ray support, you'll see something like this for the iPod - many people would love having an HD version for at home, but putting it on a travel size device for on-the-go viewing.

user-pic

You can already do this with an iPod. Rip your DVD and convert the video.. it is easy. This is just a convenience.

user-pic

@xthexlanternx: Hmm... This is something I've thought of but never gone to the trouble to do. I should.

All DVDs aren't rippable are they?

user-pic

@threadislocked: How have Blu-Ray and the PS3 failed lately?

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: What program do you use to rip them? I realize I could just google it, but I value your opinion.

This is no solution at all. You still have to buy the movie twice if you own it already. When they create a program that legally converts movies from the disc to formats for the PSP, and maybe other devices, to use I'll consider getting one. Until then, the games alone just aren't worth it. They are grasping at straws and their eyes are too dazzled by potential imaginary profits to see that this will do very little to boost PSP sales.

iPod currently does more for movies than this will.

user-pic

@TCama:

No, and that's why the headline is misleading. It's just regular low-rez digital copy that happens to be a file on the Blu-ray disc itself rather than a separate DVD or a download. Convenient for PS3/PSP owners; nothing more.

user-pic

@milkcake:

No. Why on earth would it mean that?

user-pic

@amuro98: Actually, this is kind of neat for me. I spend a lot of time traveling for my job, and there have been a lot of times that I've wanted to watch something but have no juice left in the laptop. The PSP goes a lot of places with me, so I'd often be more than happy to pull it out and watch a movie.

I mean, it's not going to make the PSP any more or less attractive to me, but it's nice nonetheless.

user-pic

@iam118:

You would think they would add a converter program to the ps3 for all bluray movies and just allow people to convert down to psp format. In this way, it is limited to only those who support the feature.

user-pic

@Kimaroo - 20% More Kitty Added!:

DVD shirnk to rip the dvd, handbrake to convert the files into a format readable by the ipod (this is for windows)

user-pic

@AshCatScram: A lot of movies already come with a free digital copy...they would be stupid to force you to buy it twice.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: I herd the Price Drop = First 1 million sales month for PS3 in September. We'll have to wait for the NPD's to be sure, but if true that would be amazing.

The PS3's best month came with the release of MGS4 and the announcement that they were discontinuing the PS2 backwards compatible models. In that month they sold nearly 600,000 PS3's.

Plus, with my iPod on death's door I am considering a PSP Go as its replacement. Only issue I have is how the PSP Go nickel and dime's you with things that should be in the box; like the USB - PSP Go data transfer cable ($14.99) and Headphones ($19.99).

Still, it does allow me to play PSOne games on-the-go, which my other iPod replacement options (Zune HD, iPod Touch) do not offer. Portable Final Fantasy Crack-tics is hard to deny.

user-pic

That would be swell if the BluRay drive in my PS3 hadn't been bricked by the epic fail of Firmware Upgrade 3.00 and 3.01. Big complaints over at the official Playstation Blog:

[blog.us.playstation.com]

user-pic

@xthexlanternx:

You can already do this with the PSP, and the PSP (2004) came out before the iPod (5th Gen--2005). :)

Example:

[psp.about.com]

Trust me, those steps are nowhere near as complicated as they sound. They're about exactly as complicated as putting video on the iPod.

I don't have a clue why Sony is even bothering advertising this.

user-pic

@amuro98: Yep. I use a Blue-Ray reader with AnyDVD HD, MakeMKV, and Handbrake to make digital versions of my Blu-Ray movies (and DVDs) to stream to any PC/Xbox in the house, or to convert for playback on my Zune/PSP/Netbook.

And it works for all movies, not just the ones they put that annoying disc in.

If anyone ever starts selling digital downloads that aren't wrapped in DRM I'd happily buy them instead of going through the trouble of doing the ripping and converting myself, but I'm not expecting that any time soon.

user-pic

talk about a useless, redundant feature. Need a PS3 to put a movie on the PSP. Stupid and only for Playstation fanboys. As useless as the expensive PSPGo which I consider more of a downgrade than an upgrade.

user-pic

This is swell and all... but I would much rather give this feature up for the ability to do the same for my gigantic PS1 game collection, without modding... what what.

user-pic

@chapoec: I think you're all missing the point.
I own a PS3, and a 42" plasma TV. If possible, I only buy movies on BluRay now. While it's been possible for me to convert my older DVD format movies to something PSP compatible, I haven't been able to do this with BluRay. This will now make it possible for people like me to take copies to watch on the plane (or anywhere else) with my PSP. I think that's a big win.

user-pic

@Edeuinu: When I bought my PSP this functionality had just been released and touted as coming soon. I expected whatever technology it needed to already be in place, and that they were just hammering out licensing or tweaking the DRM they were going to use.

user-pic

@Kimaroo - 20% More Kitty Added!: True. Of course they're phasing out the UMD drive with the new all-digital model. However, I have a nice selection of UMD movies I bought on clearance or used for just $5 (or less!).
