New FoodSafety Website Helps You Stop Accidentally Poisoning Your Family

2198 views

The USDA and Health and Human Services (HHS) today unveiled a new website focused on food safety at foodsafety.gov. It's got lots of info on how to keep food from spoiling, but better still it's a good launching pad for filing complaints, or keeping track of what's going on in your state (check the "state agency" widget in the bottom right column).

Oh joy, the link to the Texas website appears to either be broken or a phishing website.

Makes you feel good about food safety, eh?

i'm really enjoying that my state's page includes a link officially titled "Get some statistics"
.. yet isn't in any way related to any food safety - it's the state's department for health and human services and food around here is handled at the county level

This seems like something cooked up by some high paid at taxpayer expense consulting firm which when they got to the section on linking the state agencies they just linked to the state department of health, regardless if they handle food safety or not. For example, they link to the New York State Department of Health, but the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets actually handles food safety and even has a list of Food Safety Alerts on their website.

So this is a whole boatload of governmental fail combined with the good old standby close enough for government work. Getting it right. How hard can it be?

While much of the info on the site is common sense theres always a couple of people who lack it and will blame the industry for their own stupidity.

Overall the site has some useful information. The site is also decently designed unlike other government websites with UI's and layouts that look like they were designed by a chicken with parkinson's disease.

...But what if I want to poison my family?

@Trai_Dep:
I think we're still good to go then, in fact I'm off to see if I can get some tips!

@Trai_Dep: Pull a "Super Size-Me" on them. They'll be out of your hair in a month!

Yay! I actually helped to create the design for this site several years ago as part of a project to help one of the agencies involved join the internet age. Looking back I am a bit surprised it took this long, but better late than never!

Expired certificate and google shows it's a "test" site.
