Happy Labor Day!

2554 views

Your Consumerist editorial team wishes you a Happy Labor Day! We're giving everyone the day off, but we'll be back tomorrow. In the meantime, we hope our Cape Cod readers will watch out for Great White Sharks, and wish them luck finding a bigger boat.

Oh, the salesman, babe, has such teeth, dear
And he shows, them pearly whites
Just a tiny scratch, has this old Ford, babe
And he keeps it … ah … out of sight.

But seriously, who would have thought a shark could pull off "Magnum"?

Roof Repair.

My roof is fine.

Driveway recoating.

Driveway recoating? What are you, some kind of scam artist I read about in Consumer Reports?

Candygram.

Candygram, my foot! Get out of here before I call the proper authorities. You're the shark, and you know it.

Nigerian Scam. Your relative died and wants to give you money.

Money, oh, why didn't you say so! ::Opens door::

AHHHHH!

user-pic

Ah ha ha ha ha!!! You guys are hilarious!

HAPPY DAY OFF!!!!!!

user-pic

Does this mean that we get to have a free-for-all in what we post? :P

user-pic

Lucky. I hate having to work on Labor Day.

user-pic

@Eldritch: Yep, only days off I get all year are Thanksgiving and Christmas. Company didn't even bother giving us shorter open hours today. Grrr.

user-pic

@dragonfire81: Same here, I'm working the same eight hour shift I usually do. It sucks.

user-pic

@GitEmSteveDave_It'sLikeATankTop: Always a good time from you

Thanks GitEmSteveDave, for the early morning smiles!

user-pic

@Eldritch: and of course all the managers are required by company policy to get all holidays off. *eyeroll*

user-pic

@dragonfire81: Exaccccctly. I'm the assistant manager, so I have to be there when my manager isn't. So guess who gets to work Labor Day and July 4th and Christmas Eve and all that crap. Yeah, me.

I love the people who walk into my store and acted SHOCKED that we're open on Labor Day. We're open because of you people!

user-pic

@Eldritch: I'm working as well. Here's to putting the 'labor' in Labor Day.

user-pic

@Eldritch: *cracks his whip*
Hey get back to work!!

user-pic

@Eldritch: i don't mind. i get to come in and get double time and a half for 8 hours.

user-pic

@Eldritch: The last few jobs I've had, we were closed on Labor Day but I didn't have paid holidays, so I was forced to stay home and not work.

Now, I don't post on Mondays, so it doesn't matter either way. :)

user-pic

@Eldritch: I am a student so I am not in classes and I work for the university so I am not at work, per se but that doesn't mean that I am not getting stuff done today.

Mom is working today but she is an RN. And, seriously, would you want all nurses to take off on a day that many people will forget how to use a meat thermometer.

user-pic

@thelushie: Nurses and EMTs and police men are different, though. I work in retail. It isn't life or death for me to have my store open. People don't need books that badly.

user-pic

@Eldritch: Unfortunately, not being in Canada anymore, I don't get any extra pay for holidays. I remember when all businesses were required BY LAW to close on Sundays (this was in Ontario) when I was a young kid, that law got changed in the early 1990s I believe.

user-pic

@thelushie: f crs nt y dmwt. (Self dis-emvoweling so the moderator can take the day off too)

I heard that Sheriff Brody is offering a $250,000 reward for returning his 1975 shark. It seems that he had it as a pup and now that he won his bid for state DA, he's nostalgic for it.

user-pic

"We're going to need a bigger quote!"

user-pic

Are people working today?

I'd figure with the state of the economy people would want to work as much as possible

user-pic

Everything I wanted to know about Labor Day I just read online. Of course, it was from wikipedia, so it might just be all bullshit.

Now go to your local waterpark before it closes for the season. Or, go see your local baseball team before they get eliminated from the playoffs!

user-pic

@AppleAlex: It depends on your field. We already have a contract that says what days we're off and the company couldn't go back on that even if they wanted. We work mostly with government offices though who are definitely off so it's not like we'd get much work done even if we did work today. Besides, everyone would just take off anyway. We were bare bones on Friday as it was.

For retail I think you have to look at the cost you're putting in (wages, electricity) versus cost you're getting out. If you have to pay 6 people time and a half and you only have two customers that spend $50 it's obviously not worth it.

user-pic

@Eldritch: Oh, she isn't complaining. She will get a three day weekend next week.

user-pic

@Yoko Broke Up The Beatles: I'm personally waiting for all the Benny's to leave the shore before I venture out again.

user-pic

@AppleAlex: My full-time job as a textbook editor: oh hell no. If someone is coming in on a holiday they must totally be bombing their schedule.
My second job in retail: I had the option, but I worked all weekend already and my boss said she might have to send me home early today anyway, so not to worry about picking up the shift. Hence, I'm at home playing WoW and enjoying the finest sangria that $3 can buy.

user-pic

@AppleAlex: i'd love to work today but we are closed. 'holidays worked' is triple time at my job.... *sigh*

user-pic

@Yoko Broke Up The Beatles: For the Washington Nationals, that would have been early July.

user-pic

@AppleAlex: I'm working, but I'm not paid hourly, so it doesn't mean any more money. But there's not less stuff that needs to get done by the same date, so I pretty much work the same hours in a week whatever the calendar says.

user-pic

That's one heckuva s---eating grin on that shark. My guess is he just made partner.

user-pic

@Eldritch: hey, whaddya mean by 'you people'?

user-pic

Those dolls eyes are black and lifeless.

user-pic

Furlough.... Monday?

user-pic

The state is shut down, and so it the Extra Job. Grad students never stop, though...I *should* have gone in to the lab today, but instead I did homework on my couch to make myself feel better.

user-pic

@H3ion: Actually, I believe they were mathematically eliminated just yesterday. As in, they could win all their remaining games and still have less wins than the current wild card leader even if they lost all their games. Washington Nationals: Technically in It Until September!!

We had a Comcast technician come to our house today to install cable on our second TV. I was shocked that he actually showed up. First of all, it's Comcast. Second of all, Labor Day? Comcast techs work on Labor Day?

user-pic

Bah Humbug!
I've been working since I was 13 (that's 43 years worth of Labor Days) and have never had one off with pay or been paid a higher wage for working one.

Funny enough, the guy who was responsible for tagging all those Great Whites (Bill Chaprales) is my ex's dad. He's a lobster fisherman by day... and occasionally goes out for tuna. Great guy by the way. He invented the electric harpoon for the tuna industry... the most humane way to kill tuna.

I was at work yesterday and saw the special on CNN... nearly fell out of my chair haha
