Grocery Shrink Ray Strikes Chocolate Chips, Leaves Recipe Unscathed
Reader Mike discovered that Private Selection brand chocolate chips were a recent victim of the Grocery Shrink Ray. However, the company forgot to remove a key piece of evidence after the fact. That, or they're just trying to sell more bags.
The bag now contains 10 ounces of chocolate goodness instead of the previous 12, but the recipe on the back of the bag was left unchanged. Oops. "The shrink ray found its most important target but failed to remove all evidence. To adjust I just need to be sure to use only 1.67 eggs," Mike observed.

What I can't understand, is the pricing of TollHouse chips at my local grocery stores.
Typically, it goes something like this:
12 oz bag: $2.50
24 oz bag: $5.45+
It just doesn't make sense. I do the math at every visit, thinking maybe I was wrong the time before. Even during sales, the price differences are still off like that.
Truthfully, I usually don't use a full bag of chocolate chips when I make cookies. In fact, I usually use 1/2 a bag and they still have plenty of chips. Using 10 oz. instead of 12 is not going to screw up the recipe, but it's still funny that they forgot to change it. If they had - a lot less people would have noticed.
@larrymac: I'm pretty sure those are Kroger brand - they have an organic line of their "private selection" brand.
@changed my name: If I'm using a combination of generic (gasp) and Tollhouse chips, I'll use a whole bag. I find generic and Tollhouse exceptionally bland and weak. If I'm using Ghirahdelli or any kind of dark chocolate, I'll use fewer chips. Ghiradelli chips tend to be huge anyway.
@pecan 3.14159265: I more or less do the same, though I tend to use less chips over all. I like the cookie part more than the chocolatey goodness within. I know, I am a terrible person. Though sometimes I am crazy and add chopped walnuts in which case there is an excuse to cut back on the chips.
@Taliskan: For Christmas, I'm doing dried cranberry. But Mr. Pi hates anything except chocolate chips in his chocolate chip cookies, so usually I just leave them plain.
@changed my name: You can usually cut down the amount of sugar the recipe calls for, as well. My wild guess is that it may also affect the texture (perhaps not as crispy?) but it's been a while since I read anything on the topic of how baking ingredients work together, so I can't really recall. It always seemed to work for my mom when I was a kid.
@Applekid: Nope. It be organic chocolate:
Ingredients: organic sugar, organic chocolate liquor, organic cocoa butter, organic soy lecithin (added as an emulsifier)
contains: soy, may contain: milk
I'm afraid I don't quite understand the uproar about this. People who overspend on organics aren't typically bright enough to follow recipes anyway.

@pecan 3.14159265: Dried cranberry and walnuts with some chocolate chips are very tasty. You can also smush down toasted coconut on those for a really nice flavor combo... or substitute white chocolate for regular chips. The possibilities are endless and thus the love for cookies!
I usually use two bags of chips in my cookies. I like to have big chocolate cookies with dough chips. Now I'll have to buy three bags to get my 24 oz. Of course, then I'll just use all three bags for 30 oz of chocolate goodness. If I mix in walnuts and dried cranberries at the same time, it'll be even better! What the hell would that look like?
I don't see what the big deal is, if you use Egg Beaters (or similar "fake Eggs") you can adjust the recipe to insert a portion of an egg. I do this frequently when I make pancakes when a single batch is not enough for my family, but a double batch always makes way too much. I make 1.5 batches and use 1.5 eggs.
(Of course I am being sarcastic, but it is not so impossible to add 1.67 eggs into the bowl when making cookies.)
@pecan 3.14159265: After coming up with 5 posts illustrated with cats yesterday, I have a cat picture hangover.
@larrymac: "Private Selection" is/has been the house brand for Fred Meyer for many years... Tho they've been owned by Kroger for the last few years.
You know.. it's one thing to give me a few less ounces of cereal.. or one less granola bar.. or something like that.. but to mess with something that goes into countless recipes that have been standard sizes for YEARS.. that is just wrong. Leave the things in the baking aisle ALONE.
Charge more if you have to charge more, but leave standard sizes what they are: Standard.
Same thing goes for cans of tuna.. and other canned goods that go into recipes.
@twophrasebark: Yesterday, it was cupcakes. Today, it's cookies. What's tomorrow, Consumerist? Cupcakes wrapped with cookies?
@bohemian: Yes! I use a recipe that calls for 2 6oz cans of oil-packed tuna - and now I can only find *5oz* cans, which means I have to add additional tuna to keep the radio.
Shrinking things like ice cream and soda I can understand. But pantry staples? Pretty ridiculous.
@Kimaroo - 20% More Kitty Added!: This is as close as I have come up with: [mysteriousandmisplaced.com] Of course, it's not part of the Consumerist Flickr Pool. But if I had a cat, I'd be willing to risk injury to put him/her into a cookie monster outfit.
@pecan 3.14159265: Heh.. That cat looks so annoyed. I have two cats.. and one of them (The one in my AV) is tubby enough to wear a cookie monster outfit.. If you send me the outfit I'll take the picture.
By the way.. this is your fault:
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me! Oh! C is for cookie, that's good enough for me! C is for cookie, that's good enough for me, oh cookie cookie cookie starts with C!!
@jurisenpai: This, exactly.
All my recipes are screwed up/unusable thanks to the grocery shrink ray. It's not funny anymore.
@theblackdog_BackToWork: I don't know. It did that once to me, but not the second time. Try this page and search for Clint: [hpwtdogmom.org]
@pecan 3.14159265: Does that mean his chocolate chip cookies have no chocolate chips and are therefore just cookies?
@pecan 3.14159265: Omg.. It looks like the cookie monster is eating that poor dog like a snake!!
AHHH!!!! My childhood hurts!
@pecan 3.14159265: When you search for Clint the image of fbiseal shows up, but if you refresh the image, then the dog is shown. Weird [but then again the pix are from a Halloween event, so maybe there's some strange brew affecting things? ;-) ].
@H3ion: Don't worry, I'll visit and finish off the bag for you. That way your wife won't even see the bag, regardless of its fullness. ;-)
@changed my name: I don't use the full amount called for, either. I like a higher ratio of dough to chip than most people seem to, but no one complains when I bring in a fresh batch of homemade cookies!
@pecan 3.14159265: They're fattening us up for the kill. That, or CR is about to do a ranking of diet aides and they need guinea pigs.

Hahaha, that's gotta be one of the funnies "fail" in shrink ray.
