If you're one of the five or ten people out there yet to pick up a Nintendo Wii, you're about to be rewarded for your recalcitrance. This Sunday, Nintendo is expected to cut the price on the gaming console by $50, from $249.99 to $199.99. After nearly three years, the price cut shouldn't come as a major surprise, especially given discounts earlier this year from Microsoft and Sony on their boxes. And Nintendo will probably have no problem making up the difference on accessories like the upcoming Wii Fit Plus, which will debut at about $90 when bundled with a balance board.

My Wii is RED. I think it may have gotten tagged in a gang war. Not real sure though. Come on Nintendo....$50 off. That's such a discount. Who could pass that up. Seriously take $100 off and it may, i repeat, may be worth it. By the time you buy the accessories for it they've recouped the $50 you supposedly saved on it. If they can knock $50 off of it now and still make money, they could have sold it for $50 less to begin with and then dropped the price $50 and people would be more willing to pay for it.

Nahh, I love the concept. I just find the execution of it on the Wii is, well, lacking. Like 2600 gamepad type lacking. The remotes NEVER point where I want them to, or with the precision I want, and for the life of me I can't get them to sense forward/backward positioning.

The motion sensing isn't bad, but a lot of games don't seem to be able to cancel out unwanted movements. Best example: It's nearly impossible for me to do the Raving Rabbids music game because it always picks up a phantom "beat" on the upswing of the controller. Yet I tend to be the best of those I know at rhythm games.

Oh well, maybe Wii 2 will take care of these issues; I don't know. I know it took a while for gamepads to exit the 2600 phase and enter the NES phase. :)

I'm not a fan of FPS games on the consoles, chiefly due to how much dual-analog controls tend to suck if you're used to playing them on a PC like I am. Metroid Prime 3 surprised me with how smooth and intuitive the controls were. It's the next best thing to a mouse and keyboard, IMO. And the game was very fun too, so that was a bonus. :P

...I seriously don't know why you'd bother. Above all else, the reason people buy the Wii is because of the motion control. If you're that averse to motion control, then I can't imagine you enjoying the Wii.

We bought the classic controllers for emulation games primarily...although I've tried using it for Mario Kart (maybe I'm better at it that way). I know that TW Golf you can use it for, and pretty much all racing games like ExciteTruck etc.

I can't imagine SMB, Rayman, Wii Sports, etc. being any fun at all without motion controls. What's the point?

@Lauchlin: Out here in China people buy the Wii because none of the manufacturers offer warranty support. When reports of console failure on other consoles (well, the X360; the PS3 is just unaffordable to any but the richest) is so commonplace the Wii comes out ahead by far. The fact that there are Chinese-language games for the Wii helps. Oh, and Wii Fit, not to mention Taiko no Tatsujin, Pop'n Music, and Densha de Go (these games transcend language barriers).

(* technically it's not a firmware, it's one of the early code blocks before the firmware gets loaded that plugs up a hole used to install BootMii. There are alternate installation paths but I'd argue it loses it's effectiveness if it can't boot before the Wii OS)

For those wondering, this is why I believed it wouldn't work as a general purpose plays everything made for the Wii controller:

According to the Nintendo Online Shop, the Classic Controller can only be used with Virtual Console games. Specific Wii games have been designed to function with it, however.

[en.wikipedia.org]

Throw in Elebits as another game that would be better with some classic controller action. Although, again, I don't know how it will translate since the game was never designed to use anything but a Wii-mote.

AFAIK, virtually all Wii games allow the classic controller to be used in lieu of motion controls.

This actually works?! I've never tried it, so if it will work I want to know because I'll go out and buy one (make that three or four!) of those controllers tonight.

Basically, if I can play all of Super Monkey Ball, Raving Rabbids, Wii Sports, and all the other lovely titles I've forgotten the names of with the classic controller and leave the crap-ass Wii controller sitting in my lap as a dongle and nothing else the entire time I'll be so happy!

I'm just not certain how it is going to approximate the pointing and motion aspects of the game, but anything is better than nothing!

I prefer the ease of just plugging in the Xbox and getting straight to the killing.

My whole point was that different systems are better choices for different people, depending on what your priorities are. You seem to have found a system that fits your needs- good for you! That doesn't mean you need to be a dick to me just because my needs are different from yours.

Also, I didn't make any comments about the Wii sucking. I think it's a cool system. But my gaming dollars are limited, so I went with the system that best met my needs. Sorry if you think that makes me a "fanboi", I think it makes me a smart consumer.

...not sure why you're limiting yourself to games that *only* support the classic controller. AFAIK, virtually all Wii games allow the classic controller to be used in lieu of motion controls.

But in any event, it would appear that you are not the target market for the Wii. The primary reason that most people buy it is because they *can* use motion controls. In other words, people who have no interest in using a traditional gamepad-type control system.

I can only think of a very short list of Wii games on the shelf that support the classic controller as the only controller used. In fact, the only one that comes to mind right now is Smash Bros., and even that I'm not sure about.

I have a LOT of Wii games sitting on the shelf because, quite frankly, they are just WAY too frustrating to play.

I'm neither a 9 year old nor a grandmother and I hate Oprah.
But I do like the Wii because it's fun in groups and at parties and I really don't enjoy first person shooters as much as enjoy some of the fun puzzle/entertainment games Nintendo offers. I was a huge N64 fan as a kid and the Wii really fills that void for me.
But I guess it's easier to generalize than to say something intelligent.

The Wii on the other hand is innovative, differentiated from all other gaming options, and FUN. As a lifelong gamer who's been playing video games since Pong, I can affirm that the Wii, while marketed primarily to casual gamers, is also great for gamers who actually want something different. 360 and PS3 are the same as what came before.
Oh, you hit my pet peeve.

Guess what?

Anyone who enjoys playing games is a gamer. Granny who plays Wii Bowling. Jenny who's four and can't read but likes Nintendogs on her DS. Mom who can just about handle Solitaire on her computer or on Yahoo Games. Joey who plays WoW compulsively for 80+ hours a week. John and Jane next door who play Halo on the weekends. All of those and more. "Gamer" is a rotten misnomer that fanboys and the hardcore crowd like to use to the exclusion of reality. I hate that particular point of view and I've railed against it both as a GameStop employee (in years past) and in places like Slashdot.

(For the record, I know a lot about being excluded from that reality. I'm a very late-20s soon-to-be married full-time-working female PC gamer who also takes a DS on her commute, and we have a Wii and PS3 that get used in kind of a cyclic way.)

Wiis are far more accesible to your average person. My grandmother plays Wii, the first system she's played since the original NES. My girlfriends all play them too, although none of them would label themselves "gamers".

As an avid gamer, I play on an Xbox, because the Xbox Live is a better and more populated multiplayer platform. Multiplayer is what's important to me. If I cared more about the innards of the system, I would play on a PS3. And if I wanted something more family-friendly, I would get a Wii.

They each have their plusses, it just depends on what kind of gamer (or non-gamer) you are. The idea that having a preference for one makes one a "fanboi" (or "fangirl") is absurd.

You completely missed the point of the Wii. If you want to play those kinds of games, the Wii explicitly is not for you - you are categorically not the target market.

The surprising thing is that, in one console generation, it has been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the just-recognized "casual gamer" market is bigger than the traditional gamer market.

...and for the record, the Classic controller pretty much takes care of anyone who whines about the Wiimote's motion controls. Then again...the motion controls are one of the very most important reasons why the Wii is so attractive.

I bought it expecting fun party games, and I got a console with a broken control system that hasn't released anything I've wanted to play in a couple of years now. I only use my Wii now to play Super Mario Bros and other NES games, which makes me feel silly for paying so much for the privilege.

And it's not just my personal experience. I actually haven't spoken to a person in real life in the last year or so who still uses their Wii even as much as I do. I guess I don't spend enough time reading about video games online.

I rarely play FPS games, except Halo (And that's mostly because my friends like it).

But I still think the Wii sucks. It took my a while, and several hours with Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Mirrors Edge on an XBOX 360 to realize just why the Wii sucks. You can't play games like that without decent controls. The Wii controls suck, period, end of story.

Although, weirdly enough, I think they *could* squeeze some life out of the GTA series by making a Wii specific GTA game, but Nintendo would never allow it. The controls, despite being shitty, could make for a very different GTA.

The Wii is the only current-gen console in our house. The Xbox that came with my wife has been shelved for years now. PC does everything the XBox or PS can do, and better, and therefore there's no point in having either of those consoles.

The Wii is the only console that actually provides any additional value over the PC as a gaming platform. And it's the only one I have any interest in even playing.
