Repair Shop Saves Brett-Favre-Themed Goat From Certain Slaughter

14847 views

It's lucky for a Brett-Favre-themed goat that the car broke down, otherwise he'd have probably been slaughtered, says the Winona Daily News. A woman driving a Chevy Malibu came into the Winona, MN Tires Plus last Friday asking if they could replace a belt. She then informed the employees that there was a live goat in the trunk that she planned to slaughter later.

Oh, by the way," the woman said. "I have a goat in my trunk."
Prusci didn't think he heard her right.
"A what?"
"Yes, a goat," the woman said. "And it's alive."

The employees heard the goat crying and were concerned. They popped the trunk and found the animal, dyed purple and gold with the number 4 shaved into its side. It was tied up, and pretty soon it wasn't moving very much.

The repair shop called animal control who intercepted the woman as she left the shop. The goat is now under a vet's care. We know some people are upset about Favre joining the Vikings, but damn, don't take it out on the farm animals.

WHAT????! I don't even have the words to describe how insane this story is. All of it.

user-pic

So she can not slaughter her own goat now?

user-pic

@lemortede:

Thats what I was thinking too. Being from Minnesota I dont exactly want him as our QB, but hopefuly she was going to atleast eat the thing.

user-pic

Doesn't she know that no matter how much Goat-Favre dies it'll keep coming back?

user-pic

@lemortede: There are laws about transporting farm animals and laws regarding the humane slaughter of said animals.

So, no. She can't slaughter her own goat like that.

user-pic

The government should not be interfering with our right to slaughter goats.

user-pic

If this happened in NYC, the ASPCA would have taken the woman into custody.

user-pic

What a baaaaaaahd woman. Guess she didn't complete her pass (of the plate).

user-pic

Chevy Malibu? A goat? There was supposed to be aliens in the trunk. (Repo Man)

user-pic

Damn you, Obama, for literally taking the food out of the mouths of the rural poor! Clearly this woman just wanted to take a goat home to feed her starving family. The belt had broken on a product of the *one* American car company the government didn't take over- coincidence?

And everyone knows that football-themed livestock is healthier and better for the enviroment!

/Also, something somthing something death panels, something something birth certificate.

user-pic

I'm just gonna say that auto-repair and ritual goat sacrifice should not be on the calendar for the same day.

user-pic

The official report stated the woman signed her invoice as "Rene Mexico." Employees on the scene were told that this was an exceptionally rare species of goat that barks, growls, and has a locking jaw.

user-pic

@bennilynn: Well, how would a law regarding slaughter apply if she didn't get a chance TO slaughter. Also, if it was being slaughtered as part of a religious ceremony/following religious guidelines, the animal control would have no authority to stop it.

user-pic

@lemortede: @lemortede:
I'd say once she abused it (tied it up, stuffed it in the trunk of a car) she pretty much gave up that right.

user-pic

As much as I love goats, especially the fainting variety, I have a problem with this. Perhaps if she was beating said animal, then take her down. It seems the only reason the goat was in distress, if it really was, was that there was a problem with the car that delayed the trip. I've lost ice cream and steaks the same way.

user-pic

@GitEmSteveDave_MakesUJump!Jump!: some local laws do actually address aspects of who can perform such ceremonies and under what conditions. and animal control can investigate to make sure that's being followed. and if not... then they get to stop her

user-pic

Maybe she was trying to barter the goat in exchange for repair?

user-pic

@GitEmSteveDave_MakesUJump!Jump!: It was a live goat. In the back of a car. I'd say the distress came from being tied up and shoved into a dark, hot trunk!

user-pic

Ah yes, animal sacrifice. All part of football's rich tradition.

user-pic

@cc82: There's really no indication of abuse save for the businessman who had a objection to the practice of killing the animal. As for the hobbling and placement of the goat, I'm guessing the only choice they had was to place the child in the trunk and put the goat in the back seat?

user-pic

OKAY This is creepy. No, not the story. The sense of Deja Vu.

I could completely SWEAR I have read a story like this before on consumerist, and even the comments feel familiar.

Was there such a story on consumerist before, or is it just my synapses misfiring?

user-pic

@Tightlines: It's not interfering with the slaughtering of goats, it's interfering with the torturing of goats. If you do it properly, there's no law against it. If you paint it and tie it up in your trunk, less so.

user-pic

@Beagler: Sometimes when I'm doing the first, I wonder if I should also be doing the second.

user-pic

@catastrophegirl: Well, then the laws of the place of slaughter would be in effect, not the laws of a town over 80 miles away.

user-pic

I thought Brett Favre signing with the Vikings was Minnesota's 'cash for clunkers' program

user-pic

@GitEmSteveDave_MakesUJump!Jump!: You can't tie up a live animal and shove it in your trunk. It doesn't matter what kind of soup you're making for dinner.

It's illegal to leave your dog in a locked car with the windows open, why on EARTH would anyone think this is ok? Religious freedom doesn't protect you from animal cruelty.

user-pic

Hmm. If the goat was intended to be part of a Voodoo (or Voudoun, or Vodoun, or whatever) ritual, we may have a First Amendment issue here. Of course, stuffing it in a trunk might be a bit over the line, but barring a pickup truck, I'm not sure how she really should have transported it. :-/

user-pic

@ubermex: So what is "torture"? Painting it? If that is true, then there are a lot of parents who could be in trouble for torture.

user-pic

two words... Bad Consumer! :-)

user-pic

@Cameraman: Hahaha thank you. It needed to happen.

user-pic

@GitEmSteveDave_MakesUJump!Jump!: This is animal cruelty and abuse. Period. As TinkishDelight has said, stuffing an animal in your trunk is not legal and for very good reason.

Know what would have happened to that goat had he been in Arizona? He'd already be cooked before she even had a chance to slaughter it.

user-pic

It's pretty clear to me that this woman isn't trying to keep things kosher or halal. I know that Muslims sacrifice an animal during the Festival of Sacrifice, but I highly doubt this woman can pass the Brett Favre goat as an Islamic ritual.

user-pic

The views and actions of this woman are entirely representative of Packer fans.

/Go Bears.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Well, on Friday in Wiona, MN, it was 65 average, and the goat seems to have been become distressed during the over an hour it took to change the belt and the car was just sitting there getting banged on.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Oh, so that's why my dates always go to the police after we hang out?

user-pic

@ubermex: there are some laws against it. for example, my sister could not slaughter a goat in her yard, nor a chicken, although she could keep chickens as pets. her area zoning prohibits it.
at my house i could have any livestock i want as long as i take care of it properly and i could set up a regular butchering operation as long as i got the proper permits to do so on my land for personal use, or if for business use i'd need to pass health inspections for before selling the meat

user-pic

@catastrophegirl: [however i could NOT transport a goat in a personal vehicle without a safe and humane crate/cage to transport it in]

user-pic

@RecordStoreToughGuy_Has$240WorthOfPuddin': Even if it is (and I teach on this topic, I'm all down with folks slaughtering chickens to read entrails if that floats their religious boat), you still have to follow the laws for humane animal treatment, including methods of transport. And there are various laws on safe, as well as humane, animal transport ... improperly transported animals can be a traffic hazard.

user-pic

@TinkishDelight: @pattiesmart: Well, when you poison the well by saying it was shoved into the trunk, of course it sounds bad.

And yes, it is illegal to leave your dog in a locked door with the windows cracked(not open b/c how would the dog stay in), but NOT illegal to be in the car with said dog.

user-pic

@GitEmSteveDave_MakesUJump!Jump!:

I am bothered that you brought up painting but not the latter part. I would hope you are just being funny.

Torture is having it tied up, shoved and transported in a dark trunk of a moving vehicle.

I don't see those kids tied up and being stuffed in an uncomfortable position, total dark environment of a driving vehicle, not knowing what's happening to them.

So.... I call your comment either a troll through trying to be funny or troll through some serious mental disturbance.

user-pic

@katstermonster: Remind me never to accept your invitation for a movie date.

user-pic

@Vandelay Import Export: Maybe they should paint her purple and gold, shave a '4' on her and see how she likes it.

user-pic

@Smashville: Yes. Take 2 lbs of ground goat. Add a half bag of frozen mixed vegetables, a half bag of frozen hash browns, a can of cream of mushroom soup, and a half cup of sour cream or mayo. Mix well. Turn into a greased baking dish and top with cracker crumbs or crushed potato chips. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with grated cheese when it comes out of the oven.

user-pic

@thanq: Well, it was either place the goat in the trunk or the child that was with them. I see now that you don't think it should have been the child, so the goat being put into the trunk would have to be your choice.

user-pic

@RecordStoreToughGuy_Has$240WorthOfPuddin': That's true. But given that it's Brett Favre themed, I kind of doubt it.

There is precedent for a ruling like this, though. A New Orleans man was allowed to sacrifice animals as part of his belief in Santeria. [www.usatoday.com]

user-pic

@Cameraman: Malibu is made by Chevy which is GM. Gov't therefore did take them over.
