Quick! Stock Up On Ben & Jerry's Before This Sale Expires!

6131 views

We were going to list this in tomorrow's Morning Deals, but decided the bargain was just too good to hold off posting: Harris Teeter has reduced the price on all of its Ben & Jerry's pints, from $3.99 to $3.99.

Here's a bigger picture demonstrating how many times someone was forced to announce this worthless sale. We should be surprised that the employee didn't notice the error, but we're not.

Employee probably noticed and brought it to management's attention only to be told to go back and get their job done.

What I want to know is, how many people bought it, thinking they were getting a great deal? $4 for a pint of ice cream is ridiculous. Ben & Jerry's at my grocery store is never more than $3.50.

user-pic

Unfortunately B&J is the only ones with Mission to Marzipan, and thus, they control my life.

user-pic

The original $3.99 price could be the a more local deal, with the new sticker "sale" as a national thing. If that's the case, I could see something like this happening (and not being an error).

user-pic

God damn I love Ben and Jerry's. Now I want some.

user-pic

Harris Teeter = really nice supermarket with really bad prices.

user-pic

@changed my name: You just have to work the coupon system. When Harris Teeter runs their "super doubles" or "triples" coupon events, that is when you stock up.

user-pic

@changed my name: When they have a good sale combined with a coupon promotion, though, you can really clean up! I've had plenty of things come up free after they've tripled a coupon on top of a sale.

user-pic

I've seen some grocery stores don't list the original price on the sales stickers, just the current price.

Could be the case here.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Ben and Jerry's is totally worth $4.00!

:p

user-pic

I can't see the sticker close enough to determine if it is actually a "sale" sticker.

Walgreens puts stickers like these on their shelves, but it's not an actual "sale" sticker; it's there to "highlight" the "value" of the product.

Misleading nonetheless.

user-pic

That's actually a decent price for B&J around here (Baltimore area), they are regularly $4.50ish.

user-pic

@idip:
I don't care what's in the ice cream. $3.99/pint is crazy. Ridiculous!

user-pic

The last time I bought Ben & Jerry's at the HT, it was on sale and I had a coupon and they were running a coupon promotion. Two pints for $2.50!

user-pic

Even if the employee notices, it doesn't mean they can just take the signs down. Shouldn't this be common knowledge on this website?

user-pic

@edebaby: I was going to say the same thing. Kroger does this too, highlighting their "everyday value" prices or something.

user-pic

Fry's just sent me a personalized coupon for a free tub of B & J's. Maybe that means I buy way too much Heath Bar Crunch...

Anyway, this article reminded me to pick some up on my way home tonight. Yum.

user-pic

Wait a sec., that doesn't look like Target.

You mean there are OTHER bonehead retailers who screw up pricing for sales?

user-pic

@Erik_says_this: That is some good shit. But, after eating a container...my pants & shorts don't fit the same. :-(

user-pic

@wrjohnston19283: Just what I was thinking. Our Target also highlights non-sale prices for items that were in their circular. In that case, the sticker says "As Advertised" instead of "Sale".

user-pic

More stores are now putting an extra yellow sticker on their products, which consumers have learned to associate with a sale. Some shoppers grab the product without checking for savings. The rest of us get our time wasted looking for a bargain that doesn't exist.

Hoping for a consumer backlash on this.

user-pic

I'm shopping there! They have Cake Batter...I can't find it anywhere in South Florida.

That stuff is like frozen liquid crack!

user-pic

Shame B&J doesn't offer any more $3 off coupons like they did last year.

Filled the freezer with free ice cream ($2.99-coupon)

user-pic

Dang it all, Consumerist got me all excited. Dang.

user-pic

At my local Winn Dixie, some stoopid expensive dog treats have been (not) selling for months for $5.50 a bag. But now they're on sale, 2 for $11. W00T!1!

user-pic

So quick to judge.... It used to be $3.99000000001, now it is just $3.99! Hurry and stockup!

user-pic

@Eat A Peach: We refer to our Charlotte, NC, area Harris Teeter stores as "The Hairy Teat"... the prices are deplorable, but you can't stop going back.

user-pic

@edebaby: $3.99 for a pint of ice cream is not "value"! Yeah, it's good stuff, but it's not a "value".

user-pic

Do they have Fossil Fuel? I need to find this without driving all over damn town

user-pic

@rainbowsandkittens: I refer to it as the hairy peeter.

I use them for convenience only, their prices are usually pretty terrible.

user-pic

@wrjohnston19283:

Good point! I have seen some supermarkets in my area "repeat" the regular price in larger type in what appears to be an attempt to make people think it's a sale.

user-pic

This is nothing. I've been forced to put sale tags on Rubbermaid storage totes (that aren't actually discounted) plenty of times at Canadian Tire. How many times?

Thirty six out of the last forty two weeks. Twenty seven of them consecutively. It's scheduled to continue to go on sale for at least the next seven weeks in a row.

Each week, for eight different products, I have to put up the same little yellow tags, and then the following week, pull them all off the shelves. I do this over, and over, and over. The futility of it is staggering.

user-pic

@rainbowsandkittens: i want to know how many consumerists are in Charlotte... Harris Teeter doesn't have amazing prices, but i can always get what i need, and they're a lot closer than anything else - the next-closest thing is a dingy little Food Lion in a neighborhood off of Providence (a mile or 2 morth of Arboretum)

user-pic

@_NARC_: Agreed. In the smaller markets I see them for upwards of $4 all the time. We'd be lucky to find them for $3.50.

user-pic

@edebaby: those are definitely "SALE" tags, as part of their VIC card loyalty program

user-pic

Argh! Don't get me started on the Teeter! They run these big 2-for-1 "sales" where they literally double the regular price during the sale. A few weeks ago, I watched Teeter moms load up on 2-for-1 12-packs of Pepsi marked at $5.99 each. HT does this all the time. It drives me insane.
