McDonald's Rolls Out Breakfast Dollar Menu

10636 views

Some McDonald's locations just got a breakfast dollar menu. For $1 you can be the proud owner of one of six menu items: two hot cakes, a fruit 'n yogurt parfait, a sausage biscuit, a sausage McMuffin, two hash browns or medium coffee. Reuters says that the change isn't permanent and reports that analysts are claiming that cheaper breakfast is a result of rising unemployment.

Reuters says:

McDonald's has been outperforming many of its peers in the weak economy. It gets about 10 percent of sales from its Dollar Menu that features lunch and dinner items.

McDonald's has had the Dollar Menu since 2002. While sales of Dollar Menu items can lower profits for franchisees, the low-price menu attracts customers who often buy other high-profit items like soft drinks.

@Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!):I agree. Have you ever met a person, you say, "Let's get some parfait," they say, "Hell no, I don't like no parfait"? Parfaits are delicious.

user-pic

I wish the OJ didn't cost so much and $1 is still kinda steep for one breakfast sandwich.

user-pic

A dollar per sandwich is more expensive overall than buying the same ingredients, but if you're on the go and need to grab something in the morning, it's very reasonable.

If Reuters is saying that unemployment is to blame for the price decrease - aren't most unemployed people staying home and looking for work, or trying to save money on eating out? $1 isn't really steep, but if you're a fan of artery-hugging greasy goodness, you can make something much yummier with fresh eggs and such. And if you're unemployed, you have time.

user-pic

at least for my mcdonalds the sausage biscuit and sausage mcmuffin are not new. They've been $1 for many months or more.

user-pic

@TheOrtega: In comparison to how much the ingredients cost, yeah, I'd say it's a little steep. But in comparison with the other items that I could buy for $1 (that would get me a granola bar and a quarter in our corporate cafeteria), it's a steal.

user-pic

Not like I'd want to eat this shit anyways, but I'm sure it's gonna be the $1.79 value menu in NYC, if it exists at all here.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: It's not that $1 is steep, just that $1 is steep for a breakfast sandwich from a fast food place. The sausage McMuffin, I believe, is a patty on a muffin. Neither the muffin nor the patty are significant costs - both are available at the consumer purchase level for pennies. Even the convenience doesn't make up for the markup. I'd argue the same for the biscuit, pancakes, and hashbrowns. Any of those can be purchased in a small enough quantity to make the $1 seem steep.

I'd compare that to the lunch menu, where putting together a double cheesburger or chicken sandwich would likely come out to high enough at the consumer level to make the premium worthwhile.

user-pic

@TheOrtega: I'm also sure that if there's a drink that is supposed to be relatively close to orange juice and tastes worse than Sunny Delight, it's McDonald's "orange" "juice" product.

user-pic

@nbs2: That being said, it does seem tempting to grab a sandwich on the way to work (I walk past one about a block from by building every morning and afternoon). And, it's cheaper than other places, which you might pay $3 for a larger sandwich.

user-pic

"..claiming that cheaper breakfast is a result of rising unemployment.."

Actually, unemployment usually leads to not having any extra cash and instead being on unemployment and using food stamps. Ironically enough, Mcd's themselves don't even pay a living wage, so they can't ever play the card that they're doing anything good for anyone.

user-pic

@huadpe:
I don't like no parfait.

I'm kidding; actually I've never had one. Guess I should try it.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: yeah, can't help thinking that those with no income would find better things to spend their limited money on than McDonald's.

user-pic

@TheOrtega: I agree. When you have nothing to spend, even a nickel can be steep. Considering 1 sandwich isn't anywhere near enough to make for a reasonable breakfast.

user-pic

@nbs2: The sausage mcmuffin is egg, cheese and sausage on an english muffin. Considering it's warm and cooked (relativley) fresh I think that's a pretty good deal. A donut will run you $0.89 from Dunkin. As another commenter mentioned, I paid $0.99 for a friggen granola bar this morning.

user-pic

@MostlyHarmless: Yes. The yogurt is kinda oversweetened, but they're good ... especially the strawberries. :D

user-pic

@tbax929: Of course everyone like them, parfait is perfect in french. There's nothing wrong with them, they're perfect !

user-pic

@robdew2: Yeah, the article just talks about how it's new to the Chicago market. We have had the breakfast dollar menu for a while where I am.

user-pic

blah blah, make my own at home, blah blah, grow and slaughter the pigs, blah blah, bingo

user-pic

@pb5000: You're assuming the unemployed adjust to their new lifestyles right away. A lot of them end up living on credit cards, assuming their limits haven't been slashed (and they weren't maxed out to begin with.)

user-pic

@riverstyxxx: And usually, when you're unemployed, you're too depressed to get off the couch and put on pants anyway.

user-pic

@Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!): They are! I was upset when they dropped the large size completely in favor of the dollar size. The parfaits and fruit salad (also yummy!!) are pretty much the only things I can eat at McD's!!

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: You mean buying fast food is more expensive than making it yourself? NO! YOU DO NOT SAY!

Of course it is.

user-pic

@pb5000: When I was unemployed, I spent a lot of time away from home looking for work. McDonald's and Wendy's were cheap staples for me.

user-pic

@TheOrtega: do you really want a sandwich that costs less than dog food?

user-pic

@Hooray4Zoidberg: I'm pretty sure the Sausage McMuffin is just sausage and muffin, no cheese or egg.

user-pic

@Hooray4Zoidberg: That's a sausage egg mcmuffin. The sausage mcmuffin is just cheese and sausage. And butter.

user-pic

@pattiesmart: Check the sarcasm at the door. I wasn't being redundant or even being a bingo square. I was reflecting upon TheOrtega's assertion that $1 for a sandwich was steep. I conclude that no, it's actually not steep and it's understandable if you're on the go and don't have time to make it yourself.

user-pic

@pb5000: Very true. I've heard stories about brands like Hershey's being up in sales due to people using "cheap luxuries" as pick me ups when they can't afford to spend more, and while a greasy sausage biscuit for $1 may cover a bit of the cheap it lacks most of the luxury.

user-pic

@larrymac: How do you grow pigs? Are they a root animal or do you pluck them off trees?

user-pic

@huadpe: It appears that your quote is lost on some, or many, today. I got a hearty chuckle out of it, 1 internets for you sir. In fact, I can't even hear the word "parfait" anymore without this scene playing back in my head.

user-pic

In the unlikely event that a McGriddle winds up on this menu, I'm afraid I will double my weight in a decade's time.

See you on TV, naked on a bed and washing myself with a cloth on a stick.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: To keep up with the fast food mantra of All Genetically Engineered All The Time, the pigs would have to be grown from a vat of chemicals.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Theirs is orange juice. Its Minute Maid with all the pulp removed totally.

user-pic

@Crovie: The previous commenter was talking about even lower the sausage biscuit, which is just biscuit + sausage. No cheese even.

You know what's really despicable? A sausage mcmuffin is CHEAPER than an egg mcmuffin. If you order a sausage mcmuffin with NO SAUSAGE it costs you more. No joke.

user-pic

Canada's had this for a while (but we've never really had dollar menus except at Wendy's, just "value menus").

They usually offer a "mcmuffin" that consists of the muffin, cheese, and a sausage patty (notice no egg) for $1.39. I believe hashbrowns, coffee and muffins are on there as well.

I just order a Big Breakfast (*STILL* served in styrofoam!) with Orange Drink (harder and harder to find) myself, but I'm into hidden/discontinued menu items that places still keep on the till for decades after (Like the Dairy Queen strawberry cooler, Mmmmmm).

user-pic

@huadpe: I love parfaits. I just wouldn't be caught eating one in public.

user-pic

Its still stupid that an egg mcmuffin costs more than a sausage egg mcmuffin. You order a mcmuffin with no sausage and its like 30 cents more somehow.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Something tastes worse than Sunny Delight? OMG. I can't understand how anyone can drink that stuff.

user-pic

@tawni: Better value for your future health problems!

user-pic

@Applekid: they used to have Sausage McGriddles on the dollar menu here.

How I miss those days.

user-pic

@Shoelace: I absolutely hate McDonalds juice. But I also hate Minute Maid orange juice. Give me Tropicana anyday!
