Beware Scammers Installing City-Mandated "Whole House Water Systems"

3256 views

A city in Florida has just warned its residents of a weird scam: someone's been hanging pink notices on doors around town that say, "Due to the water quality in this area, we will be installing whole-house water treatment systems." You're supposed to fill out the back of the notice and leave it out for further contact. Remember, don't let anyone remodel your home on behalf of the city. It probably goes without saying, but still.

Ah Florida, you don't know how to vote, drive or tell who is or isn't a city employee.
Mr. Bunny here seems to have the right idea about the state.

"These people may be representing themselves as City of Edgewater employees"

May be representing.

The flyer does not say City employees or water department, and news release sayd the people MAY be representing themselves as employees.

Let me guess, Edgewater is a community of retirees easily confused by scum sucking shysters?

Remember, you are allowed to shoot door to door sales-scum.... just make sure their corpse is laying across the doorway threshold.

I am not seeing where the story said anyone FELL for this, just that they reported getting notices and checked, the smart thing to do.

Ahem... "This thread is useless without pictures".

Seriously, without a scan of the AD, I have no clue who is right. The given text, if taken out of context, may not be so terrible.

@StanTheManDean: IIRC, Edgewater isn't one of the best funded communities in this area. It isn't all retirees, but it isn't resort living area either.

@Vandelay Import Export: Hey, without us, where would 90% of your northern old folks spend their winters?

If it's tourist season, why can't I shoot them?

user-pic

wheres the scam? just cause someone puts a pink notice on your door telling you to install something doesn't mean its the city.

@doctor_cos: Yeah, thanks for that. The old folks are much dearer to me when they're 1000 miles away and don't have the opportunity to meddle or work my nerves. And they enjoy living in a town comprised of 99.8% old folks!

@doctor_cos:
Funny. I thought they were all in Arizona, driving 10 miles an hour during rush hour traffic.

@tbax929: I think you mean driving 6 miles per hour ON THEIR LITTLE GO CARTS down the middle of the road SNARLING rush hour traffic.

And I guess there's a reason Florida has its own FarkTag. Wayyyyy too much Farkiness happening down there.

@tbax929: Only from November though April. The hearty ones might stay through May.

To be fair, most places I've been in Florida had crap water. Gulf side and ocean side. I wish I had brought a brita pitcher.

We had one of these hanging on the door of our house in Houston about 6 months ago, except it had the worded a bit differently, like "due to the water quality in this area, we will be installing free whole-house water treatment systems".

I knew there had to be a catch, so I called them, and they went through their speil, and at the end I asked a few questions.. Turns out that they were indeed installing the systems for free, but there was a "monthly maintenance charge" (which the rep refused to tell me what it was without someone coming out and actually looking at our house, basically another way of pushing a hard sell to those people that have trouble saying "No").. I told 'em to go pound sand, of course. :)
