World Of Warcraft Accounts Canceled Thanks To Rogue Payment Processor

8918 views

Peoples' World of Warcraft accounts are getting canceled because of some random payment processor they've never heard of is filing unauthorized chargebacks on their behalf, against their will. Their name is PaymentOne. What's their deal? Ars Technica notes that this isn't the first time allegations of fraud have arisen about the company. I guess this means a bunch of affected customers are left uninentionally doing re-enactments of this famous video:

::Casts Level 40 complaining::

*soapbox*They've never heard of? That's just silly, people should read more carefully when saying up for subscpritions. PaymentOne processes the Bill to Home Phone option for World of Warcraft accounts for people that select that option. The only way PaymentOne can chargeback something is if the user gives them their info and pays through them in the first place. So it's not some random company doing it, they may not have heard of them, but if they haven't it's only because they can't read their bills. Pay more attention! *end of soapbox*

The chargebacks being unauthorized sucks though. I wonder what happened there.

user-pic

@Ditch1852: Gosh everyone knows that spells and abilities go by Ranks and not levels. NOOB!

user-pic

@coym: WoW and Blizzard are pretty big. I imagine there will be a new Pay by Phone processor very soon

user-pic

Bah, who says that video is real? i call fake.

user-pic

The kid in the video said something about leaving and never coming back. I say "don't let the door hit you on your ass on the way out."

user-pic

Every time I watch that video and see the kid brother's rubber bands in his braces, it takes me right back to 8th grade. I can still feel those things in my teeth and mouth, some 20 years on...

user-pic

well...I do feel bad for that innocent remote control.

user-pic

@discounteggroll: That remote is no longer innocent.

user-pic

I think it's God trying to force them back into the real world.

user-pic

No wonder Blizzard hates Rogues...

user-pic

@smartmuffin: I was waiting for someone to break the ice with an I-play-WoW comment :)

/leads a raiding guild...

user-pic

Would this fall under the category of mail fraud/wire fraud? A chargeback generally means that there was a payment made. How can there be a chargeback if the WOW subscribers never made a payment? Little confusing here.

user-pic

@D0rk: Okay, that made me laugh. Which talent tree is Complaining in?

user-pic

@l951b951: Hunters pwn, no need for buffage. We've also been hit with the nerf bat, so also no need for further class nerfs.

[currently on hiatus from WoW, miss my 40m raids...]

user-pic

@RecordStoreToughGuy: According to the way PaymentOne handled it, they apparently believe it to be a profession skill.

user-pic

@VotaIdiota: Or, you know, just a regular ol' profession.

*WoW NOOB*

user-pic

Yup, those lovely, anonymous subscription cards I buy at the store for 2 months at a time look better every time I redeem one. No CC on file, no hassle.

user-pic

@coym: Just because you select the pay-by-phone option, doesn't mean you necessarily retain the processor. Is it particularly obvious? I certainly don't know who processes my online credit card transactions.

user-pic

@coym: Okay, after actually reading the article, apparently quite a few of those affected have not used the pay-by-phone option, and still others haven't used it in a while. This seems like a possible technical glitch?

user-pic

@LadySiren: Bitch, Moan, and Whining.

user-pic

4+ years of monthly credit card billing, 2 accounts every month, never a SINGLE problem. I've always thought the pay by phone thing seemed a little sketchy though.

There has been a history of certain banks pulling this throughout the years though, charging back an older payment.

user-pic

@nybiker: There are several videos of this kid. He seems to have a serious issue with anger management.

Or he's a master troll. Either way watching him suffer, whether real or not, always makes me smile. As does watching any fellow gamer who's taking it seriously.

user-pic

@RecordStoreToughGuy: My first thought was that it was a racial talent. Humans ftl

user-pic

Are these people paying for their WoW subscription at their local Check Cashing place?

user-pic

i presume they can get their accounts reinstated with a new cc or subscription card. At least the account isn't being banned without any explanation, as what happened with a friend of mine.

user-pic

@BeerManMike:
Yeah, I call bull crud on it too. Rule 1 of the internet: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

But, as to the main topic, that's weird about the chargebacks. Looks like someone had better check their systems.

user-pic

At least when a WoW account is "canceled", it's really little more than an inconvenience. You don't lose anything and can basically keep it canceled forever. Granted, this whole scenario still sucks, but still.

user-pic

The video shows a typical WOW player. They are a strange bunch. Bunch of teens/adults playing a game with 1999 graphics with no story whatsoever.

user-pic

The video is NOT REAL as was reported at such on CNN. Consumerist, please hire more researchers before all your credibility is shot.

user-pic

@BeerManMike: That video scares me not so much for the tantrum, but because the kid doing the intro looks like some freakish alien. That mouth looks like it could swallow his own head.

user-pic

Fake vid like the Unreal Tournament German kid? Well played.
I was going to say someone needed to /cast Mind Soothe on him.

P.S. Have to respectfully disagree with AgitatedDot. The majority of WoW players are not overly strange, the graphics still hold up pretty well 5 years down the line, and there is plenty of storyline to follow. I enjoyed my time in Wow when I played.

user-pic

@AgitatedDot

As we'd say in /2 Fail troll is fail. Games going back more than 15 years, spanning RPG books, manga, books, etc... but no storyline.

You're one of those people who like baseless generalizations, aren't you?

user-pic

I threw a few temper tantrums as a child. I never even thought to try to shove a remote...

Wow. (No pun intended). If that video is real I don't think it being posted on the web is going to help that kids obviously severe emotional problems.

user-pic

So...When you do an EECB for this, does it go to the Lich King?

I stopped playing a while ago and this is the only king that came to mind.

user-pic

@PLATTWORX: The article isn't about the video. The video was just put up to add some humor, they never claimed it was real.
