Use Google Trends To Find The Best Time To Go Car Shopping

4104 views

Engine Industries used Google Trends to map the frequency of search terms like "used car," "new car," and "buy car" through Google. They found that "people search car-related keyterms most in the summer and least in the winter, with a small spike right before Christmas."

I hate to be a party pooper, but I didn't need google to know that you get cars cheapest once the old models go on sale (usually after september).

Similarly, you probably want to avoid shopping for that new HDTV in the run up to Christmas.

The best time to buy a car is when it costs more to fix the one you already have than it would cost to buy something new. End of the month is usually the best time, particularly in a slow market.

How about when the best time is to buy a motorcycle?

Good post, thanks for the info.

@H3ion: yes, best deal i ever got on a car was on january 31st at 9pm.

I've heard from a family friend who manages several car dealerships on the West Coast, that the best time is late summer. The reason is they need to move cars to make room for the shipment of the next-year models they'll receive soon thereafter.

I've actually never put this to test though.

@H3ion:

absolutely, they are looking to get as many cars reported for the ending month as possible. The last day of the month at a dealership is total insanity.

This is a bad post, since Google Trends can be influenced by outside sources. I could set up a script right now to spam Google with repeated searches of "Monkey Butt" (infact, there's an Add On for FireFox that does just this) and it will influence the trends for that day. Get enough people together and you will have the No. 1 search of the day.

See this? One of Opie & Anthony's buddies, a homeless guy, is the No. 1 search on google. They found out he died the day after Jackson's death and told their fans to "Google Bomb" "tippy tom died." And it worked.

Same thing on July 8th.

"Rev al is a racist" was their doing.

this information being public is both good and bad for the public domain...

good for consumers.. but will eventually become a problem with this data readily available for retailers...

@Poustman:

New motorcycle: wintertime , snow and ice on ground, sub 30° weather, end of the month, Tuesday afternoon.

Used: anytime during the year as long as it is 3 weeks after either a positive pregnancy test for 1st child, job layoff, or couple purchases a new home.
