Today until 10 am 10:30 am, Starbucks is giving away free pastries with the purchase of any beverage. You have to present this "invitation" to receive the food. Sorry Moneycat, oatmeal isn't included. (Thanks to o-line!)

For all you late sleepers, my invite actually says 10:30, so you get an extra half hour!

Given the markup of the beverages, they are still making oodles of money.

Would be nice if Hawaii wasn't excluded

No, they only had one batch of the free pastries. And, of course those went quick. I went to two locations in DC and both were out of the "free" pastries, never mind they had oodles of croissants, muffins, etc. Asshats.

Glad to be of service! Mobile users can just show the invitation on their device, and the Starbucks I visited didn't even ask to see one.

The pastry was pretty tasty, although I'm disappointed that they replaced the blueberry coffee cake with a reduced fat, multiple berry version. It's good. Just drier.

@HRHKingFridayXX: My Bux didn't care what kind of pastry you got free. /justsayin

@Andrewjh: Lucky! I guess being in a higher volume store has its disadvantages. Although I say if you're going to have a free day, just go the Ben and Jerry's route and not put any restrictions on it.

@HRHKingFridayXX: Crap. I forgot about this, but I probably wouldn't have gotten one anyway, since you're talking about how the DC locations were all out.

user-pic

@HRHKingFridayXX: They got an extra batch of pastries on order to cover the freebies, sent automatically by corporate, but there's no limitation on what type of pastry you can get, just that they need to have the supply.

The event is what they call a 'surprise and delight' event. They generated initial buzz by letting online users know via Facebook and Twitter over the past few days. However, in theory (not actual practice, unfortunately), they are supposed to offer the deal to everyone who walks in the door (while supplies last), to 'surprise and delight' their customers. At least that's what my husband, a Starbucks partner, told me.

@chiieddy: Ahhh. So maybe the stores thought only the extra batch could be given out free? Just seems a little bait and switch to me still, maybe they thought they could get coupon folks in and have them pay.

user-pic

@HRHKingFridayXX: I wouldn't be surprised, but the coupon is as follows:

Pastries included in offer are: Muffins, Scones, Bagels, Croissants, Rolls, Breads, Pound Cakes, Morning Bun, Coffeecakes, Cheese Danish, Apple Fritter, Doughnuts, Tarts, Pies, Gluten Free Orange Valencia Cake, Topical Paradise Bar

Actually, it looks like there's a 'handcrafted' beverage limitation on it, but Americanos are cheap.

@chucklebuck: Do the pastries at Starbucks still taste like ass? This doesn't sound like a good deal.

user-pic

@chiieddy: I want my barista to give me a shoulder rub the next time I order something. That would surprise and delight me. Please feel free to pass that along to your husband, kthx.

Local university Starbucks would not honor the certificate. Said they weren't participating. The pastries they have on hand always are stale anyways so no huge disappointment there.

@CraigCossus: Annoying, isn't it? "Licensed" stores at colleges, supermarkets, etc. aren't "real" Starbucks locations, so they generally don't participate in any of these promotions or accept pre-paid Starbucks cards, etc. It causes a lot of confusion for the customer, but they still get to cash in on all of the benefits of Starbucks brand recognition...

This is why there was a huge line and I had to get my coffee elsewhere this morning. So I guess that didn't really work out.
