Taco Bell Chihuahua Mascot Dies

3712 views

Gidget, the tiny Chihuahua star of Taco Bell's "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" ad series in the '90s, in addition to other ad and film work, died yesterday of an apparent stroke. She (yes, she) was fifteen years old.

RIP favorite mascot.

You could kick the Eddy's ass anyday.

So many celebrity deaths lately!

I'm glad they figured out his cause of death well before MJ's - I'm way more interested to know intimate details of a chihuahua.

user-pic

Well, that means I'll be getting a ridiculous amount of Taco Bell tonight in her honor.

...though it's not like I ever need an excuse to go to Taco Bell. I guess I never grew out of that particular college habit. That, or they're putting crack/nicotine in their beef or something...

user-pic

@bornonbord: Yup, the dog was a girl. Well done.

user-pic

@Laura Northrup: I saw a tomatillo in the grocery store and freaked out thinking we were that much closer! Then, someone pointed out how white I was for thinking a tomatillo was new and exciting, and I moved right along...

user-pic

She (yes, she) was fifteen years old.

Who would name a male dog Gidget?
And around the time that dog was popular wasn't it preferred to have a female dog as penises were gross and yucky?

user-pic

From whence she came, so shall she return. No, I literally mean they are planning to grind her up into taco meat.

user-pic

First Micheal Jackson, now this.

user-pic

@Matt Redacted: It's just part of her contract, just sayin'.

user-pic

Well, Billy Mays has company in the afterlife's advertising department.

user-pic

I think there's a bitch joke in here somewhere, but I'm gonna need some help.

user-pic

Wait, there was only one dog? I always figured they used a team of Chihuahuas.

user-pic

¡Yo quiero a vida!

user-pic

@Kaisum:
Yeah, but the dog's voice was a male in the commercials.

user-pic

Think I can sell my Taco Bell Dogs (only $2.99 with a purchase of a taco) on eBay for big bucks?

user-pic

Adiós poco uno. Vaya con Dios y el Descanso en la Paz. Usted fue adorado por muchos me incluyo.

user-pic

Why emphasize "she?" I can't remember any tbell commercials that would indicate the dog was a male.

Now the fact that Spuds McKenzie was a female dog is damn funny.

user-pic

I understand that her nurse and dermatologist are both being investigated. Actual cause of death was probably eating one of their burritos.

user-pic

@StanTheManDean: I don't remember those! I want one. So yes, to fools like me.

user-pic

@mcnerd85: Hamburger manufacturers are apparently doing the same and making a special batch of Barth Burgers in tribute of Les Lye.

user-pic

@B:

Reasons to use one dog:

Chihuahua coloration (and size and proportions for that matter) varies quite a bit relative to most breeds. Finding more than one similar enough that audiences wouldn't notice could be a challenge.

Chihuahuas are stupid. Training a dog is hard enough without that impediment.

user-pic

@Bogart's Falcon aka Philly Falcon: ¿Español auténtico o Google Translate?

user-pic

@WeAre138: The voice they used for the dog (e.g. "¡Yo quiero Taco Bell!") was definitely male.

user-pic

Yeah, if my dog had a masculine voice, I'd give it a male name too. Can't blame them.

user-pic

The dog's funniest commercial was actually an ad for Geico.

The gecko is going in to autition for Geico spokesman. On his way in, he passes the Taco Bell dog on its way out and says, "Hello threre". The dog says, "Oh great! A talking gecko".

user-pic

@B: Taco Bell raises chihuahuas by the millions. Did you think there was actual beef in that Burrito Supreme? Arf!

user-pic

On a related note, Taco Bell is now offering the "Gidget Big Box Meal" for a limited time only.

user-pic

I'm more worried about Carlos Alazraqui. Will his voice acting work suffer now?

user-pic

@StevePJobs: I think the translation is something like this "Goodbye little one. Go with God and rest in the Peace. You were loved by many including me"

user-pic

"The dog had an exceptionally happy life, her owner says. "

Well, except that it's a dog, and happiness is a human emotion.

user-pic

Morris the Cat: "Mine. Mine! Bwah ha ha hah, now the world is m-i-n-e!"

user-pic

*Sniff*

Que lastima.

*Sniff*

user-pic

@Stephen Schenck: 'Happiness' is a chemical reaction in the brain, which dogs are also capable of reproducing.

user-pic

@bornonbord: Yet she had such a deep speaking voice. Hmmm I suspect it was a side-effect of secret sheep-urine injections in Switzerland.

user-pic

@StevePJobs: Or, like the receptionist at my former doctor's office, had smoked for 40 years.

user-pic

@SnoopyFish: That's just what it said.

I must give thanks to an English to Spanish translation site I found via Google. I never could have said it alone.

user-pic

@Bogart's Falcon aka Philly Falcon: Except for the word "the"...unless I made a mistake while typing it into the translator (if I were to bet I would bet that I did make the mistake).

user-pic

@Dabby: That's what I was going to say.

I remember reading somewhere that testing was done which measured brain stimulation in dogs using things like treats, different voices, etc. They found that the animal brains do react to various stimuli. The animals showed happiness and fear along with some other emotions.

user-pic

She does look a bit stiff in the pic.
