i learned everything i need to know about making ice cream from watching iron chef. because seriously, there's nothing like pike eel and peach ice cream. in the world. on purpose.
actually way back before i got thrown out of girl scouts we learned to make ice cream in two different sized coffee cans. ingredients in the inner one, seal it. ice and salt in the outer one, seal it. turn on its side and roll it back and forth.

I'm just finishing a marathon session of making 17 different icecreams and sorbets for my girlfriend's birthday party. I've been kind of obsessing over every detail and ingredient for about 3 weeks, and I'm finalizing the last two tonight. It'll be kind of a relief when the party's over; it's down right exhausting thinking of everything in terms of how it'd taste frozen.
The current flavor list is peach, orange, coconut, mango, pineapple raspberry and tomato sorbets, and vanilla, strawberry, blueberry, peanut butter, thai iced tea, chocolate, and maple bacon icecream.

I remember (although I'd forgotten until 10 seconds ago) making butter at school when I was about 5 or 6 years old. The teacher put some cream in a jar with a bit of salt, then each kid in the class took it in turns to shake the jar like crazy for a few minutes. All day long. At the end of the day we ate crackers spread with the butter we'd made.

@Cantras: I tried to keep notes, but this is what I've got for thai iced tea:
Thai Iced Tea Ice Cream
3/4 cup Thai Iced Tea leaves
2 cup water
1/2 cup palm sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
Boil Tea in water for 10 minutes. Strain tea leaves out. Return the tea to a boil and reduce tea to 1 cup volume.
Combine with Custard Base.
Custard Base:
4 Large Egg Yolks
1/4 cup Sugarugar
1.5 cups Whole Milk
1.5 cups Heavy Cream
Combine 4 egg yolks and sugar. Stir to incorporate.
Heat Cream and Milk to 175 F.
Temper Yolks then incorporate into the cream mixture. Heat to 181, then cool in water bath.

well i tried to pierce my nose with them. it didn't go over well in a room full of 7 year olds.

Borrowing my parents ice cream maker, I've had a chance to make the following delectable desserts over the past few weeks:
Coffee ice cream (my favorite)
Watermelon sorbet
Nectarine ice cream
Chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream
Kiwi ice cream
While it has been fun to try out different flavors, I don't think there is a real savings compared to just buying it at the store when it is on sale (assuming that's the only factor we're considering).

@MostlyHarmless: don't forget, If you didn't crave more ice cream than you make in a month you wouldn't be in this mess. I promptly make and eat as much ice cream as I want, before the end of the month.

+1 I want to try his banana ice cream recipe, but modify it so that it's actually a chocolate covered banana w/ peanuts ice cream.
I love the way he views food as science. It really makes you a better cook to know why foods do the things they do. I've learned a lot from him!

Excellent tip. The frozen bananas add the coldness + are a binding agent. I just saw Alton Brown make banana ice cream and he said that you can make the ice cream w/ a blender if you don't have an ice cream maker.

I'm more interested in your maple bacon ice cream. I assume that you started with the vanilla custard base and then are adding bacon pieces in during the final freezing stages?
Or are you liquifying the bacon (errr....) and then adding it to the custard base before freezing?
