How To Maintain Your New iPhone's Erection—For Free!

8854 views

I've been a satisfied owner of an original iPhone for a while, and recently upgraded to an iPhone 3G for $99. The crappy part is, on the new phone, Apple is no longer including the handy little dock, forcing the poor device to lie prone, without dignity.

I found my original iPhone dock useful and, electronically, it's the same; the only difference is in the actual physical shape of the hole. So, I just took a drill (a Dremel will work better, but I can't find mine right now, ok?) and reamed out the hole until the new iPhone fit.

It's pretty easy, and for those upgrading from an original iPhone, free. It doesn't look perfect, but when the phone is in it you can't tell, so who cares? Just shave the groove out a bit wider and deeper, and test fit with your phone.

Bout a year late: [gizmodo.com]

But still good for those who are new to the iPhone 3G.

or 3Gs , Nice idea

Or you can use an in-desk grommet from Belkin: [catalog.belkin.com]

@BZMedia: The whole point was for a free option. I have seen a few free DIY options out there with legos, cardboard etc. Gizmodo hit on this a while ago as said above by Vanilla.

user-pic

@outinthedark: Well a Dremel tool to carve it out isn't free.

user-pic

@BZMedia: semantics.

The point being, if you have the items around your house to get the done at no additional cost, this topic may help you. If not, then on to option #2, which you had posted.

user-pic

@SnowingCookies: Agreed. But the other point is, if you're an iPhone 3G owner, it's probably within your budget to purchase a solution for $39.99 than to go out and buy a Dremel and set down to whittling.

user-pic

@BZMedia: I think overall, if you own an iPhone 3G and did NOT have a 1st gen iPhone, you're going to be shelling out money if you want a dock since it didn't come with the 3G or the 3GS. This mod is for people who have owned the 1st gen and have upgraded to a 3G.

I'd rather just have the cable to hook to a device. I don't think I've had anything with a dock since my Palm IIIe.

user-pic

@HenryES: But the cable takes two hands to operate. Dock? Just one.

user-pic

I'm going to miss my dock when I eventually upgrade to the 3GS. I'd do this mod but I'm not exactly handy with a Dremel.

user-pic

@BZMedia: I'm a 3G owner, and I'm very happy to have someone point out that I can modify the dock from my first phone. $40 is $40 - why waste it when I don't have to? Owning an iPhone doesn't equal propensity to throw away money.

user-pic

@Karita: Yeah, it kinda does.

Anyway, I'm a total gadget freak as well as an ex-mechanic (from a long long long long time ago) and somewhat of a DIYer / handyman with a ton of tools in roll-a-way cabinets, and even I don't have a Dremel, as much as I'd love to have one. That's the only reason I suggested the thing from Belkin. How many people have a Dremel sitting around? Sure you could probably accomplish the task with some sort of pocket knife, but it's going to be all jagged looking and ugly and not smooth, and what 3G owner is going to stand for that? Personally, I'd rather not have the dock than have it be uncool. Was just an alternate suggestion. I didn't expect it would be met with controversy and drama. If it's really out of line then I rescind my suggestion.

And, the mod probably won't work at all if you keep your iphone in a case, which it seems nearly one of two (observation only) iPhone users do.

That's probably why they realized they could stop providing a dock and no one would really miss it.

But I do appreciate that there are those who like and use them.

I have the Apple universal dock, which seems to fit fine with a case. (I've got an Otterbox on the way, so we'll see.) I'm looking for a car mount that is not a suction cup, no power, no FM modulator. Just somewhere for it to sit securely. They used to make them for satellite radios that would bolt to one of the seat bolts or in a crack on the dash, but I can't find one for iPhone. Right before Christmas, Griffin (I think) was advertising a "pass through" cigarette lighter mount, but it seems they never went into production with it.

Anyone have any ideas?

user-pic

@Tankueray: I had the 3g ad just upgraded to the 3g S. I also used it for my iPod video.

user-pic

@Tankueray: Ah ha! It was actually Kensington: [www.amazon.com]
The reviews aren't that great, but this is exactly what I want. I've tried vent mounts only to break the vent and it seems all the other specialized mounts aren't made to fit with a case. I guess I'll give it a spin anyway.

If there was an edit key and I would learn to Google before I start typing, I'd just delete this whole rant.

My apologies.

Is there an adapter that will allow the iPhone 3GS to fit in the old iPhone 2G dock?

user-pic

This is typical of apple making a new dock for every product
