Consumer Reports Declares Wendy's & McDonald's Have Scientifically Superior French Fries
Our sister-publication Consumer Reports tested new trans-fat free french fries from Wendy's, BK and McDonald's and have declared that... yeah they basically taste the same as they used to only they don't have trans fats.
So, that's good news.
As far as taste goes, the testers preferred Wendy's and McDonald's fries over Burger King's. We suspect this is because they used human beings and all humans know that BK's fries are a little funky. (Don't send me hateful emails, this is backed up by rigorous science.)
Here are the results:

@litrock: /agree. They are crispier and the truckloads of salt on them make them taste way better. And I thought I was the only crazy one.
@litrock: I prefer BK fries. I can only eat McDonald's fries when they are piping hot. As they cool, they become exponentially worse.
@Saboth: Curly fries trump all other fries. That isn't a fair comparison. Sonic's fries are the worst, they are always limp.
Agreed. However, my wife is allergic to peanuts, so I rarely get to have 5 guys since getting married.
I agree on the coating. It makes me feel like I am eating some kind of cylindrical potato shells.
I can't understand how Burger King is in business. 8 out of 10 items they sell can't be eaten without some digestive issues and/or just simply grossed out by whatever they just sold you claiming to be "chicken".
So gross. Wendy's and Mc's are 100s of times better overall. They only screw up when they got fools working the counter.
@litrock: I just read the descriptions on the fries above now and they say BK fries aren't crispy? Either their tests were done at a shitty BK or they're fucking mad, because every BK I've ever gone to has fries that are so crispy they can be used as door jams.
But theirs are definitely more expensive. It's a damn shame.
@HFC:
yeah, I think I was thinking of the "home fries". I think they are so lackluster, they are shocked when someone orders them instead of the curly. However, with the way their boxes are shaped, you almost always get like 1 giant curly fry and a bunch of babies when you order curly, and get about 2x more of the home fries, despite being inferior to the curly.
@brianala: I'm gonna take it a step further and say we should include all fries in this little competition. Ruby Tuesday's has some mean fries. Plus you get UNLIMITED fries with any burger (you do here anyway). So uh, I'm declaring a winner.
@Melissa Powers: I enjoy Del Taco's food with the exception of their fries. I think wavy-cut fries should be banned, as they are usually soggy. That goes for Sonic too.
@Saboth: It's so they last longer under the heat lamps. They used to only last 8 minutes before you had to toss them and make new ones, now it's something like 30 minutes.
These "new" fries taste the same at the 25 minute mark as they do fresh out of the vat. Anyone who's had Wendy's or McD's fries after even just 10 minutes can attest that the taste changes dramatically..
@Gene Gemperline: Arby's has superior curly fries, but their regular fries leave much to be desired.
People should realize that Ms. Marco is only the messenger anyway. If anyone is going to flame anyone in this situation, direct them towards Consumer Reports, am I right?
On second thought, I don't want to discredit the fact that we Americans are lazy and sometimes don't read things through. I guess people WILL e-mail Meg.
BTW, I love me some Wendy's french fries. I know what I'm having for dinner tonight!
I LOVE smooshy fries.
My significant other and I dump our fries on a plate so I can poke them and find the smooshy ones. He eats the crispy ones for me.
Man, if you like truckloads of salt, then you should come around here in Madison, WI, and check out some of the local Wendy's restaurants. Often, they put so much salt on them that I'm constantly getting refils of whatever I was drinking.
I respectfully have to disagree here. If I pull up The Consumerist and see cats eating french fries, I may be turned off altogther from cats AND fries.
Cats and french fries: Two great tastes that DO NOT taste great together.
@Hooray4Zoidberg: I do, that was my high school gig. I remember the day the fries changed. It sucked big time. The new fries were stale tasting way before they were even near cold. I remember wasting a lot of potatoes.
@Yoko Broke Up The Beatles: Funny thing. I was listening to "Be my Yoko Ono" when I read the comment.

Nice move. My first thought on seeing the headline was: "Holy crap, shitstorm."
Not to mention accusations of selling out and the ilk.
