Consumer Reports Declares Wendy's & McDonald's Have Scientifically Superior French Fries

24999 views

Our sister-publication Consumer Reports tested new trans-fat free french fries from Wendy's, BK and McDonald's and have declared that... yeah they basically taste the same as they used to only they don't have trans fats.

So, that's good news.

As far as taste goes, the testers preferred Wendy's and McDonald's fries over Burger King's. We suspect this is because they used human beings and all humans know that BK's fries are a little funky. (Don't send me hateful emails, this is backed up by rigorous science.)

"(Don't send me hateful emails, this is backed up by rigorous science.)"

Nice move. My first thought on seeing the headline was: "Holy crap, shitstorm."

Not to mention accusations of selling out and the ilk.

user-pic

Yeah, I'm one of those freaks who prefers BKs fries. I know it's not normal, and I know it's not popular, but my mouth and brain don't care about your silly peer pressure!

user-pic

Do they mention the fact that McDonald's covers their fries in salt, to the point where you no longer taste fry, and Wendys does not do that?

user-pic

BK DOES have inferior fries. I would rank Wendies as #1, then McDonalds, then hmmm Hardies, Sonic, Arbies, BK. I'd probably eat at BK more if their fries weren't so bad.

By the way, in the RSS Feed you get this:

I haven't eaten any in quite a while, but McDonald's fries have always felt a bit stringy and limp.

user-pic

@litrock: /agree. They are crispier and the truckloads of salt on them make them taste way better. And I thought I was the only crazy one.

user-pic

Oh fries aren't fried in trans fat anymore? So that means I can get the large and I won't put on weight, right?

user-pic

I know Five Guys doesn't really count since it's not yet totally nationwide (although same is true of, say, Sonic, which drives me nuts when I see their ads on TV all the time) ... but their fries blow all these guys out of the water.

user-pic

I love Wendy's fries, and they're the best if we're talking plain old French fries. But if we're allowing seasoned fries into the mix, Rally's has THE best fries.

user-pic

Yes but who else remembers the "old" BK fries before they redesigned them about 15 years ago? Personally I think the new one's taste like they were microwaved, but I don't hate them. The old one's just tasted like soggy old McD's fries.

user-pic

Wendy's fries are nasty... maybe it's just around here but they're always either overcooked, soggy, or half-frozen. I nearly always get a side salad or chili instead.

user-pic

Why does BK put that coating on their fries? Completely ruins them, IMO. Wendy's fries are def. the best.

user-pic

@litrock: I prefer BK fries. I can only eat McDonald's fries when they are piping hot. As they cool, they become exponentially worse.

user-pic

@Saboth: Curly fries trump all other fries. That isn't a fair comparison. Sonic's fries are the worst, they are always limp.

user-pic

@Princess Leela:

Agreed. However, my wife is allergic to peanuts, so I rarely get to have 5 guys since getting married.

user-pic

@Groovymarlin:

I agree on the coating. It makes me feel like I am eating some kind of cylindrical potato shells.

user-pic

I can't understand how Burger King is in business. 8 out of 10 items they sell can't be eaten without some digestive issues and/or just simply grossed out by whatever they just sold you claiming to be "chicken".

So gross. Wendy's and Mc's are 100s of times better overall. They only screw up when they got fools working the counter.

user-pic

I like McD's fries (I can't remember the last time I tried Wendy's) but my favorite fries are from KFC.

user-pic

Are you kidding? McDonald's fries taste NOTHING like they used to. They are practically inedible now.

Give me some Arby's curly fries over McDonald's any day.

user-pic

@Princess Leela: 5 Guys is pretty much the best burger chain here on the east coast.

user-pic

Now I want McDonalds fries. Thanks, Consumerist. The least you could do is post a photo of a cat nomming on fries.

user-pic

I personally like BK fries better than American McDonald's. But you know what was an experience? Going to McD's in Japan. Wow.

But the best fries don't come from any of these places. The best fries come from a Fells Point (Baltimore) pub, sprinkled in Old Bay. Oh man, oh man.

user-pic

@litrock: I just read the descriptions on the fries above now and they say BK fries aren't crispy? Either their tests were done at a shitty BK or they're fucking mad, because every BK I've ever gone to has fries that are so crispy they can be used as door jams.

But theirs are definitely more expensive. It's a damn shame.

user-pic

@HFC:

yeah, I think I was thinking of the "home fries". I think they are so lackluster, they are shocked when someone orders them instead of the curly. However, with the way their boxes are shaped, you almost always get like 1 giant curly fry and a bunch of babies when you order curly, and get about 2x more of the home fries, despite being inferior to the curly.

user-pic

I think Del Taco has the best fries, but they are only in 17 states.

user-pic

@brianala: I'm gonna take it a step further and say we should include all fries in this little competition. Ruby Tuesday's has some mean fries. Plus you get UNLIMITED fries with any burger (you do here anyway). So uh, I'm declaring a winner.

user-pic

@Melissa Powers: I enjoy Del Taco's food with the exception of their fries. I think wavy-cut fries should be banned, as they are usually soggy. That goes for Sonic too.

user-pic

Arby's, hands down.

Although I do seem to remember that Taco Bell's in Canada had something called a "fries supreme," which was basically a nachos supreme with... you guessed it.

user-pic

@Saboth: It's so they last longer under the heat lamps. They used to only last 8 minutes before you had to toss them and make new ones, now it's something like 30 minutes.

These "new" fries taste the same at the 25 minute mark as they do fresh out of the vat. Anyone who's had Wendy's or McD's fries after even just 10 minutes can attest that the taste changes dramatically..

user-pic

@Gene Gemperline: Arby's has superior curly fries, but their regular fries leave much to be desired.

user-pic

You do realize that although they try the fries will vary in taste(browning, salt, even oil content) by sets of locations, as people usually franchise a couple in their town.

Anyway, that means this "science" is, well, soggy. haha, yea..

user-pic

In 'n' Out, hands down.

Any fry that tastes better with ketchup on it is a bad fry.

user-pic

@JustinSane07: Apparently you have not been to my local Wendy's.

user-pic

@cc82: Chick-fil-A with polynesian sauce is one of the world's most amazing offerings.

user-pic

@MostlyHarmless:

People should realize that Ms. Marco is only the messenger anyway. If anyone is going to flame anyone in this situation, direct them towards Consumer Reports, am I right?

On second thought, I don't want to discredit the fact that we Americans are lazy and sometimes don't read things through. I guess people WILL e-mail Meg.

BTW, I love me some Wendy's french fries. I know what I'm having for dinner tonight!

user-pic

hmmm, i find BK fries the best of the 3 by far. Wendy's are too soggy with not enough salt. McD's have too much salt and not enough potato. BK is right in the glorious area that is the middle. As for burgers:

Wendy's Burgers > BK burgers >>>>>>>>>>> McD's burgers.

user-pic

@G.O.B.: Come on!:

I LOVE smooshy fries.

My significant other and I dump our fries on a plate so I can poke them and find the smooshy ones. He eats the crispy ones for me.

user-pic

@Saboth: checkers/rally's fries are pretty good too. probably top 3.

user-pic

@Moosehawk:

Man, if you like truckloads of salt, then you should come around here in Madison, WI, and check out some of the local Wendy's restaurants. Often, they put so much salt on them that I'm constantly getting refils of whatever I was drinking.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265:

Chick-fil-A waffle fries have been trans fat free for about a year now as well.

user-pic

@th3truthiness:

5 Guys is pretty much the best burger chain here in Madison, WI, too!

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265:

I respectfully have to disagree here. If I pull up The Consumerist and see cats eating french fries, I may be turned off altogther from cats AND fries.

Cats and french fries: Two great tastes that DO NOT taste great together.

user-pic

@Hooray4Zoidberg: I do, that was my high school gig. I remember the day the fries changed. It sucked big time. The new fries were stale tasting way before they were even near cold. I remember wasting a lot of potatoes.

user-pic

@Yoko Broke Up The Beatles: Funny thing. I was listening to "Be my Yoko Ono" when I read the comment.

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: i guess it is a bit apples to oranges. can i vote for "none of the above," then?

user-pic

@trashbaby: I do the same thing on the odd occasion i eat fries. Woot! love the limp ones.
