Apple Blames Jailbreaking For Recent AT&T Visual Voicemail Outages

7765 views

Apple's not through with their blitz against jailbreaking, with this newly updated support doc that says, among other things, that the recent Visual Voicemail outages from AT&T were caused by—and happened to—hacked iPhones.

They don't clarify whether the iPhones don't play well with AT&T's network because jailbreaking did something bad to them, or whether AT&T and/or Apple shut jailbroken phones out of the service. They just say,

Services such as Visual Voicemail, YouTube, Weather, and Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device. Additionally, third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have had difficulty receiving notifications or received notifications that were intended for a different hacked device. Other push-based services such as MobileMe and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with their respective servers.

If you were one of those who recently didn't receive Visual Voicemail messages for a day or more, can you chime in and let us know whether your iPhone is jailbroken? On IntoMobile, a commenter notes that so far he's received "7 voicemails from all over the US intended for other people and no, my iphone isn't jailbroken."

Knowing Apple and AT&T; they probably deliberately broke it.

I will never buy a device that allows another company to dictate what I can and cannot install on it. Apple can rot.

user-pic

Mine were delayed 12 hours, and I'm not jailbroken. It could be something else entirely for me, though.

user-pic

This is what you call "grasping at straws" and possibly "demonizing a contingent you don't want to have to deal with". It's also why I have a shitty old phone.

user-pic

Mine isn't Jailbroken nor does it have Third Party anything on it and it went out for a little while (literally a few minutes) Might be something completely un-related but worth mentioning. That's never happened before too since I've had it-- Almost three years.

user-pic

I have never jailbroken my iPhone and still had delayed visual voice mails! I really hope Apple is listening, this needs to be fixed not put off just like the many other issues!

user-pic

Is it that incredibly surprising to hear this load of horseshit come from a company that has deliberately sabotaged jailbroken iPhones in the past? I love my Macbook and iPod, but Apple will be lucky if they ever see any of my money again.

user-pic

Those terrorists don't want us to watch YouTube.

user-pic

Not jailbroken. Getting delayed or no voicemail notification at all. Called ATT and they said to restore and call back. Stall tactic?

user-pic

Not jailbroken, but had set up tethering. Network reset, all is working now.

user-pic

@r4__: I agree. I haven't had a single problem and I'm jailbroken beyond the point of redemption. Got visual voicemails during this time, used all the features and jailbroken apps no problem. Apple is just running scared. They should have learned from the Windows Mobile community that we won't stand for this crap. (Being that WM has been able to DL custom apps for...ever...) I love my iPhone, but only because it's jailbroken for NemusSync and GVoice. I had to wait a whole week for the 3GS to get jailbroken so I could use NemusSync again, it was the most horrible time of my digital life.

user-pic

@damicatz: As far as Skype and jailbreaking, that's pure AT&T - we know from the DRM fiasco that Apple doesn't like corporate America what to do with their purchases.

As far as app restrictions, they're probably trying to avoid a repeat of the video games crash of 83. Disgusting and tasteless games gave video games a bad reputation and led to a crash of the entire market. One of these games featured General Custer raping an Indian.

user-pic

I've had occasional delays on voicemail notification, usually by an hour or two, but occasionally more than a day. Never got anyone else's messages, though. Not jailbroken.

user-pic

I got one six hours late and one a day late. No jailbreak. This, among other things, is why I'll be switching to an HTC Hero on whatever service provider it appears on. And I'm an Apple fanboy.

user-pic

@Tankueray: My comment got broken off..
I will have an iPhone as long as I can do as I please. If Apple effs up my jailbreak so that I can't be productive, I'm canceling all of my lines (3 iPhones, 4 regular and 3 data cards) and going with Sprint. They're offering me a really sweet deal to switch. I am willing to pay the money to cancel. I've had AT&T or one of it's predecessors for almost 17 years now.
I'm still within my 30 days on 2 of the iPhone lines (not jailbroken) and I'm not afraid to tell them to get the #%$^$% off.

Apple, grow the F$%# up.

user-pic

That support doc does NOT state or imply that ALL voicemail or service issues are caused by jailbreaking as this article implies.

The article is simply detailing what sort if issues customers can have by jailbreaking phones, most of which have been widely reported such as the push notification issues, visual voicemail no longer working or bricking by applying official updates on jailbroken phones before patches are available to the jailbroken community.

This article updated to reflect that, it's very misleading.

user-pic

@spittingangels:

Also, just to be clear, delayed Visual Voicemail is not an indication the feature is broken, as in not working at all.

Delays in receiving text or voicemail notifications usually indicate an issue on AT&Ts backend of the service and they've had these types of issues from time to time for several years.

If you have been affected by this type of service issue and are not using a jailbroken phone, call up AT&T and ask them to knock some money off your next bill.

user-pic

This is conceivably true. Not all workarounds are very smart in anticipating the consequences of, say, having 1000 iPhones out there with the same security key.

user-pic

@damicatz: fwiw, Verizon also intentioanlly cripples the functionality of their phones (i know it's true for the last 2 LGs i bought, assuming it's also true of other phones)
They install their VerizonOS on all the phones, making it impossible to do certain things, like tethering my TomTom via bluetooth to get GPS satellite updates.

user-pic

I'm jailbroken and had absolutely no problems whatsoever.

user-pic

I didn't receive mine for a month but yes mine was jailbroken and had the hack for ATT teathering support. Even after I restored it I still didn't get my voicemails, a quick call to ATT discovered that my voicemail had not been fully set up on their end, not my fault.

user-pic

Not jailbroken. Visual voicemails are showing up 5-6 hours late.

user-pic

@Tankueray: I have to say, I was talking to a friend that previously had Sprint and now has AT&T with a Samsung smart phone and he says the service is terrible. In my ~17 years, I've never had a major problem with my carriers (CellularOne - Cingular - AT&T) Either I'm conditioned to crappy service and I don't know any better or I'm the one customer that is mostly happy.

I'm going to go with conditioned to crappy service. The user on one of my other lines travels all over the country, never has a problem, and is using a RAZR.

I'm not defending AT&T or Apple, I think they're assholes, I just don't have a better choice where I live. As much as I'd hate to give up my JesusPhone, I'm not afraid to drop them (no matter the cost) to prove a point. You do not tell me what I can and cannot do with an object I paid for and physically own. You can tell me how many minutes and bandwidth I can have, but the phone is in my possession, it's mine.

I've merely jailbroken, you want me to unlock all three I have and go to T-Mobile? Take a $400/mo meal ticket to another carrier?

I hackintoshed my netbook thinking I might like a MacBook. Now, I'm going to Hackintosh my other five computers just for shits and giggles. (Okay, maybe not because I'm lazy, but I could.)

Not related: I've actually found Windows 7 to be friendly to Mac users as well as Linux netbook and WinXP users. Even my grandparents who were using Win2000 seem to like it much better. I threw it on their old machine, a Gateway with a PII (maybe the original Celeron) and 512mb RAM. It runs faster than 2000 or XP. If it's not too much to buy, I might switch them over. Otherwise, teach thm Ubuntu and be done with it.

user-pic

My voicemail didn't work; in fact I couldn't even set up my account (I had waited a couple weeks to do it).

I called support and they were very nice and stepped me through a bunch of stuff and then told me that this was a known issue they were working on, and hopefully they'll have it fixed soon.

Then I read about a week ago that jailbreaking might be the culprit and there was a simple fix; resetting the network in the settings menu. So to answer the question; yes I was jailbroken at the time, and yes the simple fixed fixed the problem...

Haven't really had problems that I know of with youtube or push; but I've had a lot of serious battery drain issues which is probably more tied to the backgrounder app etc...

user-pic

@scootinger: It's not clear that they ever deliberately sabotaged phones. I give them the benefit of the doubt. Apple is not using ECM techniques here like some satellite TV companies.

Some of the early unlocks used bad techniques, for which Apple had little incentive to bend over backwards to accommodate. If Apple wants to assume that the baseband hasn't been abnormally modified when they issue an update, why shouldn't they be able to?

If you unlock or hack a device for which the software is integrally packaged with the hardware, you're on your own. You can't count on easy software updates, full functionality, warranty support or anything. That's just the way it is.

user-pic

Yes, I had voicemails delayed for days at a time on two separate iPhones in the NYC area and neither of them were hacked.

user-pic

@The Queen of Everything: I had a very similar situation yesterday where I never received a VM that I knew a person left because I talked to him later for at least 8 hours. I am on an unjailbroken device.

user-pic

My wife and I both have unjailbroken iphones. I routinely get voicemails hours after they were left on my 3g, and my wife's voicemails well be delayed for days at a time for no apparent reason (she has the first generation iphone).

user-pic

I've had voicemail issues and my phone is not jailbroken.

user-pic

One of the main reasons I got rid of my 1st gen iphone (not jailbroken). Constant delays on voicemail notifications, or no voicemail at all when people left them for me.

I switched to blackberry on verizon, never had a problem but I wanted the g1 so I went over to tmobile and again, never a problem. Apple and/or ATT are screwy, at best.

user-pic

My iPhone isn't jailbroken but I did get an AMBER ALERT text message that AT&T said was sent to me from a friend...in Alabama. The Amber Alert was for a town in Southeast Missouri - and I live in Atlanta. So I wouldn't limit it to voicemail - text messages got a little wonky too. And that's never happened before.

user-pic

I've jailbroken both of my iPhone 3G's - the first one developed a hardware fault and was replaced under under warranty. Neither have ever had any problems, ever, with Weather, Stocks, YouTube, or Visual Voicemail once it was available in Australia, and it actually enabled itself whilst I was roaming in New Zealand. Visual Voicemail enabled exactly in the timeframe Vodafone AU were advising it would be.

The phone has never been unlocked, and never had the baseband modified in an unauthorised way. It's unfortunate how jailbreaking and unlocking are never talked about separately as if they block jailbreaking to block the unlocks geekery types like me will be devestated!

user-pic

Lovely, Apple. Nice Peter Griffin response there- "Uh... it was you!"

But I'm not being fair. Lets all remember that Apple is infallible, and can do no wrong. Anything that is wrong with their products- the exploitable code & jacked up notifications in iPhones, exploding MacBook batteries, and iPods that catch fire- are ALL someone else's fault.

I hate Apple. The "i" in all their products stands for iDiot. They will never see a dime of my money, what with their overpriced crap & diabolical business practices. Deliberately sabotaging jailbroken iPhones? That should be CRIMINAL. Once you BUY the damn thing, it's YOURS to do what you want with! How do they think they have the right to tell you what you can do with it? If I were to ever recieve an iPhone, jailbreaking would be the FIRST thing I would do, with the second being activating a prepaid account with T-Mobile. Fuck Apple & AT&T's megalomania, I will never patronize a company that tells me what I can & can't do with the products I PURCHASE from them. HTC has never blamed me for any problem I've ever had with my Touch Pro. Wait, I don't have problems with it, cause it's awesome. And I can do whatever the hell I want with it. MS FTW.

user-pic

@damicatz: So basically, you will never own a cellular phone, or a cable company DVR.

I am not an Apple fan boy as the only apple products that I own are a couple of old iPods and an iPhone, but one advantage to the restrictions that apple places on its hardware is the fact that they are able to predict EXACTLY what system configurations exist and will run a piece of software, and they can test on those exact configurations. This makes for a much more stable environment and you tend to see fewer crashes.

user-pic

I have an original Edge iphone, not jailbroken, and sometimes I won't get voicemails for a couple days or so.

user-pic

@Tankueray: I think you were saying that your friend had a bad experience with their Sprint service, but I'm not sure. If you are, I just want to throw my first hand opinion of the serive I've received with Sprint. I've been a customer of theirs for almost 7 years now. The only time I've had any reception issues is when I've visisted family in a different state. They don't live close to many phone towers and reception can be spotty. I live in a major city though and with the exception of a few dropped calls every blue moon, the quality of the reception has been great. I've ran into a few snags with their customer service, but for the most part, if I have a problem, they get it fixed. Also, Sprint's plans are quite affordable and they don't skimp on the options.

Just my two cents.

user-pic

@spittingangels: Yes. Specifically, it notes the problem with hacked iPhones and the Push Notification service - which has been known to be working weirdly for hacked phones and is probably increasing traffic on towers.

user-pic

Just a thought... if all of the above services (though obviously not visual voicemail, yet) work just dandy for T-Mobile customers with properly Jailbroken iPhones, unlocked iPhones and Jailbroken/unlocked iPhones...

...then doesn't that point to the problem being AT&T's glorious network? For that matter, do any other carriers abroad that carry the iPhone experience any of these issues?

My money is on the issues originating with AT&T. I mean for chrissakes, they won't even support MMS at present, which would make sense if this were 1998, but...

user-pic

My first iPhone (2g) was, my new 3gs is NOT (and I didn't do a recovery of data from my old phone.) I had the problem and missed a voice mail saying my brother had been hit by a drunk driver! He was conscious briefly which I missed because I got to the hospital 5hrs late.

Thanks ATT!

/He's still in a coma

user-pic

Jailbroken and getting voicemails right on time. 3GS in Chicago

user-pic

@damicatz: That argument might work with the iPod Touch, but when you're talking about devices on AT&T's cell network, they pretty much have to keep it locked down. It isn't as robust as the internet is. They don't lock down Windows Mobile phones because they don't have the draw that the iPhone does. They probably anticipated that the iPhone would dramatically increase the amount of traffic on their network (not so much voice as data).

By the way, did you know that the government dictates what you can and cannot install on your car? And that your local government probably also dictates what you can and cannot do to your house?

user-pic

@Tankueray: Everyone has bad experiences at some point. Personally, I like AT&T so far. I've had it for about three months and I haven't had any problems. Verizon, on the other hand, is the devil.

user-pic

@Raachie: What do you mean, it went out? Like it went black and completely fizzled, or you couldn't get visual voicemail or you couldn't get menus to work or what?

user-pic

@jeremiahbritt: I'm not jailbroken and I've had no problems at all...then again, no one ever leaves me voicemail. I think since I've had my phone, I've gotten three voicemails. People text me or call back.

user-pic

NOT Jailbroken. Original iPhone, Visual Voice Mail send to Thursday received on Saturday. No idea what is still floating around out there...

user-pic

@gStein: Verizon may cripple their phones, but at least the phones work as advertised. The Omnia, Touch Pro, and Saga have all had their GPS unlocked in an update and the Omnia kept everything from it's original GSM counterpart, minus GPS (until the update).

I'll take what I know works. It's also a regional thing, which network works best. In the NE, VZW, On the West Coast AT&T, in the Midwest, T-Mo. I line in the NE, so VZW it is.

user-pic

iPhone 3G, Jailbroken. No issues with Visual Voicemail, no issues with YouTube (don't use that much though), no Stocks issues, and no Weather issues.

I'm pretty excited to move back to a Blackberry in the next couple months, and likely on Verizon. Forget AT&T & Apple. (With all this bullshit, I wonder if it's time to tell my g/f to sell her Apple stock)...

user-pic

@The Queen of Everything: I had 1 voicemail show up on my phone but was unable to retrieve it for about 20 hours.

My co-worker had 2 voicemails show up 24 and 48 hours later. Sometimes his phone doesn't ring but goes straight to voicemail, so he's paranoid now, and if his phone hasn't rang in a few hours he calls it from his landline.

Neither of our phones are jailbroken. They are the first generation iPhone running the latest firmware.

user-pic

My phone is not jailroken and I do not use voicemail much but I did have a 2-3 day delay in getting one a couple weeks ago.

"Apple Blames Jailbreaking For Recent AT&T Visual Voicemail Outages"

Well *indignant voice* I blame APPLE for all voiced outrages!!! How you like THEM apples??
