Select Wisely is a company that makes food allergy/sensitivity cards and medical emergency cards for travelers in a wide variety of languages so you don't need to worry about random shrimp or peanuts showing up in your food on a business trip to China. Reader Michael (commenter LetMeGetTheManager) ordered a set of cards, and was so delighted with their service that he just had to e-mail Consumerist.

Jim,

Thank you for sending the allergy translation cards I ordered, both the "Strongly Worded Peanuts" cards for China and Hong Kong, as well as the "List of Nuts" cards for China and Hong Kong. However, including cards that I did not order, but that would be extremely helpful for someone who is severely allergic to nuts, is a great example of a company going above and beyond what they normally do in business. With my allergy, which could easily lead to death in an instant, those emergency cards work out to be extremely helpful in the unfortunate event I need to use them.

I will let you know how these cards worked out upon returning from my trip.

Since Michael had ordered his cards as PDFs, it didn't require a lot of resources to enclose extra cards with his order, but it was still a thoughtful gesture and very useful to him!

Just a quick note on the commentary in this discussion thread from SelectWisely.com (1) we do send extra laminated cards as well - depending on the customer needs as we perceive it. Safer travel is our goal for our customers; (2) the cards are not 100% fail safe as nothing in life is however they effectively open the communication gap for travelers visiting foreign countries where they don't speak the language; (3) of course, people can get their own translations via internet, high school language teachers, friends, etc. and they can make their own cards or PDFs the same way people can do lots of things themselves such as grow their own food. Can be done but it's not time/cost effective.

Our service has provided thousands of people in dozens of countries with an additional sense of safety and the cards have proven to be a useful, low cost, effective way of communicating food allergies and other heath issues. Feel free to contact me directly for more information.

Wow, this is great. I didn't know this company existed. The problem with this is though, that waiters *never* know about anything that isn't a main ingredient. I'm very allergic to corn, and anything with sauce or gravy is usually made with cornstarch, but a waiter wouldn't understand that.

I work in a Hispanic town, and got dragged out to lunch to a taqueria. I specifically got someone to translate and ask if there was corn in the rice and they said no, and it came out with corn kernels in the damn rice. It's pointless to even try and eat out when you have food allergies.

@oneandone: I've had varying success with those celiactravel cards. In some countries they know immediately. Actually, they worked well in a number of eastern and northern European countries. As for Turkey- not at all. I'm not sure if it was the translation or what, but they confused several Turkish waiters. I eventually stopped using them and just said "No bread, no bulgur." Luckily that is a country where what you see is what you get- no hidden food additives or weird junk.

I also have one of those little travel books with pictures of every food, transportation method, city service, etc. that you could think of, so all I have to do is point to pictures where I don't speak the language.

Michael, thank you for your order yesterday. Attached are your SelectWisely cards.

You can print them, cut them out and fold them lengthwise to resemble our laminated card. Make as many copies as you need.
I have also included our List of Nuts and our Emergency card in each language in case you need that. No charge for these.
Please let me know if you have any problems opening the PDFs. And if you have a minute upon your return (assuming you are going on a trip), please drop us an email and let us know how the cards worked out.

Best regards,

It was good to see that they had an actual human send an email, and that he cared enough to include something else that could help me in the unfortunate event I needed to use it. Being deathly allergic to nuts, I feel like doing this was above and beyond what the company needed to do.

Anyway, always talk to the chef. Never take the waitstaff's word for it, unless it's an allergy that doesn't bother you that much if there's a reaction. Any good restaurant should make accommodations, but you have to talk to the person who cooks the stuff!

@trixrabbit: This is so true. I had a hard time in Latin America. Even explaining in Spanish wasn't enough. The disconnect is that the waiters don't know what's in the food unless they are the owners. Many just nod or say yes whether they know the answer or not.

And no, Google translator doesn't work for basic translation half the time. It definitely doesn't work for specifics like food allergies, especially because vocabulary varies a lot from country to country.

@trixrabbit: No kidding. I went to a restaurant in Toronto once with a friend who had a serious seafood allergy. We told the waitress, and it was serious enough that we got her to take the shrimp chips off the table so as to avoid contamination. We specifically asked for "no seafood" in our meals. I ordered a stir fry and when it came I again asked if it had any seafood in it, she said no, it was fine, and my friend tried it. Then five minutes later she comes back and says "Oh yeah, it has fish sauce in it. Is that a problem?"

What kind of waitress waits until after the person starts eating the food to actually check with the kitchen about a life threatening allergy? Just goes to show you, even in English, the human factor makes your best efforts fail sometimes. The cards are definitely better than nothing though, since people who don't speak your language often say "yes" or "ok" when they don't understand what you're saying.

You may or may not know this, but Office Depot sells (or used to?) an ID card kit that could be used for this. You're supposed to print the PDF card on their supplied piece of paper and then attach it to an included plastic card.
