Actual Appearance Of Domino's Pasta Bread Bowl Melts Expectations
Oh, it's easy to make fun of the bread bowl pasta that Domino's introduced a few months ago. And we certainly did. But no matter how much you like carbs, this product's gap between advertised image and actual appearance is a little....melted.
At above left is Domino's promotional image. They look starchy, but not bad.
As seen on This is why you're fat, here's an actual bread bowl as delivered. And, presumably, tilted a bit.

Domino's Three Cheese Mac-N-Cheese Pasta Bread Bowl [This is why you're fat]

I loooooove bread -- it is my biggest weakness, and I could just eat loaves every day if left to my own devices. My fiance doesn't eat his pizza crusts and I can't help but nibble them gleefully. A bread bowl of soup is a little pocket of divinity in wintertime.
And even I can't find anything remotely appealing about the idea or pictures of Domino's pasta bread bowls.
Someone did not make it right. There is no way your going to get what is in the picture, its something your going to have to live with. If you did, do not eat it. Is not real food (for the most part).
The person gave you way to much cheese. Eat the food and save the cheese bread for later, then again think of it like. You got a free order of cheesei(sp) bread.
Having worked at many levels in fast food management (including promotion) there are two reasons why the product does not turn out like it looks in promos:
1. Artists renditions. The product and its marketing are developed simultaneously - time is money. This first class are outright lies and companies should be prevented from using this type of advertising.
2. Incorrect preparation. Well, duh - but not as obvious as it seems sometimes. In the two pictures above, what I see is a product that has too much of something. Incorrect portioning at the store *kills* the product, whether its over or under portioning. The cooks in the test kitchen pour over exact measurements to optimize taste and visual appeal. Then the monkeys in the stores screw it all up.
To Domino's defense, their preparation instructions have always been simple and strait forward and generally result in a product that's at least close to the PR. From what I see above, this is clearly a store prep screw up.
BTW no I don't work for Domino's, but I did work for a franchisee long ago.
In their defense, we've ordered the bread bowl pasta a few times and each one looked relatively similar to those pictured in the ads. Not to mention the pasta was surprisingly tasty (I expected it to be bland) and the bread was soft.
No I do not work for Dominos and I've definitely had my share of annoyances with them but if you like lots of bread and pasta it's worth a try.
It ain't easy bein' cheesy.
@sbcpunkrocker: I'm guessing you're just saying the stock pictures look unappetizing just because it's Domino's we're talking about here. They look exactly like any other pizza/pasta dish out there.
@blazinrebel: I agree; I had one (Chicken Alfredo) a few days ago and it was pretty good. Nothing like the as-delivered picture.
@Ben_Q2: Actually, all that extra cheese makes me feel like throwing up.
No way this thing can be healthy. Even if you eat 1/4 of it.
I bet the calorie values on it are not that terrifying, but probably has more fat and carbs in it than you should have in 3 days.
@sbcpunkrocker: The bread looks undercooked to me. Very unappetizing.
Although, I have heard these pasta bowls do taste good. Then again, they say the same thing about escargot...
@blazinrebel: me three. We got several of each kind for a swim team carb loading night and they looked/tasted good.
Well I can tell you I HAVE had one of Domino's Pasta bread bowl's before, and I can tell you that it actually DID look like Domino's picture - it was actually "solid" enough to pretty easily cut into 4 pieces to share with others, and it for the most part "stuck together" into 4 pieces.
If Domino's gave me what is picture by the other person, I would return it right away - that just looks nasty.
No, the pasta I eat looks far more edible than even the Domino's stock photos. It looks like something I could get in the freezer section.
Escargot is very, very good. Based on the contradiction between that looking bad and good, I could possibly give these breadbowls a chance, but they still look disgusting, both in reality and in Domino's photoshoot fantasyland.
But it isn't as bad as I imagined - I was going to guess 2000 calories, minimum. 1/2 of one is a "serving" but I guess we assume you'll eat the whole thing?
Which makes the bad one the Three Cheese Mac N' Cheese. 1460 Calories, 56g fat, 190g carb, 2840mg sodium! But that's for the whole thing - cut it in half if you go with a real serving.
Ugh.
On the upside - it would give you 70% of your Calcium for the day!
This picture made the rounds about 6 weeks ago. I've seen a number of photos of the Bread Bowl pastas because I've been doing some work for Domino's recently. This definitely isn't representative of how they normally look.
For example, the below review has three different photos from Flickr, all of which resemble the photos in the ad more than they do the picture above.

@humphrmi: How about because the food they photograph isn't actually an edible product? It may look tasty, but when you get a burger that's got toothpicks and glue inside holding it together, or when you discover that the "steam" coming off the burger in the photo is actually caused by soaking and microwaving a tampon to give off steam... then it becomes a little less appetizing.
I considered taking a "food design" program in college, but the equipment costs were rather high...
@Englishee Teacher: "is actually caused by soaking and microwaving a tampon to give off steam" ...
Eh? How does that work?
@jamar0303: You soak a tampon in water and nuke it in the microwave, so it gets hot and gives off steam, then place it wherever you want steam. I guess it probably steams longer than other options.
I work for Three Dots Pizza, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies, etc.
And yeah, the pasta in that pic was probably both made/baked incorrectly AND tipped sideways to boot. At my store, we're very careful to portion and shape correctly (small dough ball, 4.5 ounces pasta, 4 oz sauce), and I swear on my heatwave bag, our pasta bowls look *fantastic*, and are very popular (and tasty).
One messed up delivery does not a trend make! Sheesh.
@Etoiles: There was a place near where I used to work called Tutto Bene. Not only did they have wonderful, wonderful bread bowls with delicious chicken noodle soup, I got it 25% off for being an area employee. It was the best ever.

Those look just as unappetizing in the Domino's provided pictures as they do on the TWYF site.
