Zagg Zags When It Could Have Zigged, Helps A Brother Out
David wrote in to tell us how he bought a cell phone, accidentally ruined the screen protector, then sought out the phone-condom manufacturer Zagg to try to buy a new one. What happened next was the stuff of a Frank Capra movie. Check out his story to see why David has gone Zagg-nuts:
I just wanted to pass along a story that I thought was a company going Above and Beyond anything that they had to do in order to satisfy a customer.
I recently bought a T-Mobile G1, and being paranoid, decided to get a screen protector for it (my hands get dirty a lot, not good with a touch screen phone). I searched around and found Zagg, who make the InvisibleShield for the G1. I ordered it after watching the bowling ball test and anxiously awaited. The small things in life, you know?
When the InvisibleShield came I got right to work. Washed my hands like they say, sprayed the solution on my finger tips like the suggest...and promptly dropped the protector sticky side down onto a magazine. I peeled it off, but try as I may, I couldn't get the ink off. I thought I was out $16, and I was furious at myself.
I thought that maybe it would be possible to buy just the screen protector (minus the solution, squeegee, etc) for $5-$10, cheaper than the kit, but still costing something. After all, it was totally my fault, and I readily admitted this in the email I sent to customer service. I figured all I would get would be either "Sure, we can sell that to you for $10," or "Tough luck, you need another kit." I was ready to accept either.
I got an email back from Betty C. kindly explaining that the lifetime warranty is only good for parts that are worse-for-normal-wear. In this case, though, they were going to send me a replacement kit free! Along with free shipping! I couldn't believe it. It was entirely my fault that it got dropped, and they were sending me a free screen protector and shipping on them. I got the replacement about 4 days later, and all has been well.
I know it's not a $1,500 laptop, or a $400 Xbox 360, but it was Above and Beyond nonetheless. Thanks Zagg. When you could have profited, you chose not to, and have a customer for life.
Now, if we can only convince Zagg to start manufacturing $1,500 laptops and especially $400 Xbox 360s.

I've never been good installing screen protectors. There's always some bubble of finger print that slips in there.
I got the full body protector from zagg for my g1, and wasn't really happy with it. The protection is great, I constantly kept the phone in with my keys and you'd never have known. My issues were twofold. One, the full body protector has a lot of small gaps where seams don't quite line up, which really drives me insane. I hate the look of gaps, plus dirt and gunk build up in there. Second, the protector got discolored fairly quickly, ending up tinged brownish, and I couldn't seem to get it clean. I tried wiping it off with the included solution, with lcd screen wipes, nothing worked. I ultimately ended up peeling off the full body protector and just leaving the screen protector on.
@tgrwillki: Yes, and they're awesome. And yea, Zagg's customer service is the definition of "above and beyond."
@tgrwillki -- Yes they do make an iPhone shield. I've got the one they make for the Mac Air and I've been very very happy with it as well.
I will echo, however, Helen's notes above. The plastic discolors where it is constantly exposed to dirt etc (in my case there are two brownish spots where my hands rest while I type) and if the edges don't line up perfectly you tend to see grime accumulate on the over-hanging adhesive.
Bubbles work their way out over time, however, and it has definitely done a fantastic job of protecting my Mac.
@tgrwillki: Yes, they do make one for the iPhone. I have one, and it wasn't that difficult to install. I had some tiny bubbles, but they went away after a few days (or maybe weeks).
This was more than a year ago, and after continuous abuse, the film remains invisible and the glass remains pristine.
I love it.
Disclaimer: I'm only using it to protect the glass, on the front. I might have had Ms. McGee's issues with the seams had I bothered to install the back half.
I have a Zagg shield on my GPS. I, too, screwed up the installation, and had to have a new one sent out. I think I maybe paid for shipping, but it was Priority Mail, so no big woop.
It was pretty easy to install, after I re-watched the video and read a few tips. The GPS is waterproof, though, so that makes it easier - just drench the screen while sliding the protector around. I'd be nervous installing one on an iPhone or other non-waterproof device.
@TheUncleBob: I'll bet girls line up around the block for the chance to go on a date with you, big spender.
I had the full-body protector on my G1 for 6 months. The installation was very difficult and did not come out perfect. I couldn't get the top curved corners to lay completely flat. As a result, gunk ended up in there over time. After 6 months I couldn't stand to look at the gunk so I removed the body protection and left the screen protector on. I purchased a snap on case from Amazon for $5 and it works great.
I wish they would offer professional installations.
I also bought a new screen protector from Invisible Shield since mine is looking a bit old.
@Biggbrother: They do. They've got mall kiosks in many areas. I'm going to get one on my Pre this week.
Let's not get carried away here. Given that the packaging Zagg sends these in is more expensive than the actual skins (which I would estimate cost no more than a dime), they can afford good customer service. They generate profits from their free lifetime warranty, as the $3.95 they generally charge for shipping is a heck of lot more than the cost of the skin and the postage.
They can afford good customer service because they are basically ripping people off right and left.
That being said, it is a great (but overpriced) product, as long as you only use on flat surfaces. Trying to put the shield on the back of an iphone is a disaster of gaps, bubbles and accumulated dirt.
@Cocoa Vanilla: Careful with the mall kiosks. I've read reports on XDA-developers that the mall kiosk people can screw up installation plenty. [forum.xda-developers.com]
Having the same sort of material on the fron of my car, and watching a pro put it on, I knew better than to try to the Zagg protector on my Palm Pre.
Best Buy is an authorized dealer/installer, so I paid a hefty price to have them install the full protection kit on the front of the Pre. After they went through four of them they returned my money ans sent me to an invisibleSHIELD kiosk at a nearby mall.
The young lady at the mall kiosk installed the full shield perfectly in about seven minutes. No bubbles, everything lined up, no "inclusions" under the shield.
Cost at the kiosk was about one half the cost at Best Buy.
You just never can tell, I guess.
OP: Glad to hear Zagg stepped right up and took care of your ruined shield! From everything I've heard they are a really stand-up company.
I bought one for my Blackberry Curve 8330 but apparently ordered the one for all Curves that were not the 8330. (Half my fault, half just unclear website labeling when they have the CURVE and CURVE 8330 models). They shipped me out the correct one, I shipped out the incorrect one and they tried to charge me for not ever sending the incorrect one. I put a block on my credit card, and a month or so later they finally admitted they'd gotten it. Weird.

I have one of those for my iphone. Seems like a great company and all but the screen protector itself was nearly impossible to "install." Mine still has some bubbles and weird spots on the screen even though it took two people to install it and we followed the directions to the t. Other than that, it works pretty well.
