Will Ferrell Introduces Sunscreen For Men

29522 views

Okay, maybe it's not just for men, but you can't help but feel studly when you look at the labels for these bottles of 30 SPF sunscreen. And yes, it's real; apparently Ferrell is pulling a Paul Newman and selling Completely Random Products for charity. In this case, the proceeds go to a scholarship fund for cancer survivors.

Consumer Reports didn't test the Ferrell-faced product line, but they use the announcement as an opportunity to remind everyone to protect yourself outdoors, so we will too:

While we can't vouch for Will's products-they weren't part of our testing-we like the subtext: Don't forget to use sunscreen-at least 30 SPF-to prevent skin cancer. In our recent survey, two-thirds of respondents said they used sunscreen at least occasionally, and women were more likely than men to use it frequently. Respondents were less likely to use it during non-beach, non-swimming activities such as running, and were more diligent about putting it on their kids than themselves.

Don't forget to apply 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun to allow for absorption, and if you're swimming or sweating heavily, reapply every 2 hours.

But what really matters, when it comes to skin cancer, is style—and imagine how much you'll impress the beach hotties in Whale's Vagina* as you slather on some Will Ferrell lotion.

The sunscreen comes in 6 oz bottles for $11.99 each, which is competitively priced with other products, and contain the following active ingredients: Homosalate @ 8%, Oxybenzone @5%, Octisalate @4%, Avobenzone @ 3%, Octocrylene @ 2.4%. (Oxybenzone and Avobenzone provide UVA protection.) Shipping is $7.00.

*Thanks to Kieran Kelly for reminding me of the original name for San Diego.

That's um, slightly disturbing (the images on the bottles)

The product only offers the bare minimum 30 SPF? And the proceeds don't even go towards cancer research but survivors of cancer? This is a joke right? This product will CAUSE more cancer simply by being on the market. Any SPF below 40 should be banned.

user-pic

Wow. I don't know if I want some or if I want to kill the guy now...

user-pic

I think this is actually classier than selling borderline copyright infringing cookies.

user-pic

@Loren Fisher: Realistically, I think only infants, the elderly and the Irish require SPF higher than 30.

user-pic

@Loren Fisher: Do you even know what you're talking about? SPF 30 blocks 96-97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks ~98%. SPF 100 blocks ~99%. It's really not that much more. And SPF is UVB only. Just from reading that the SPF rating for a product is 30, you can't say that it's inadequate.

The more important factors in terms of skin cancer prevention are the presence of UVA blockers (you must check out the ingredients! Unfortunately, at this time, there is no rating system in use for UVA protection...) and the thickness of application. Most people simply don't apply enough sunscreen, so they get much less protection than they think they're getting.

user-pic

@Loren Fisher: From what I know, anything over SPF 15+ is a fallacy and a marketing ploy rather than real benefits. Remember that SPF is just a system of general 'how long you can be exposed to the sun before you get burned', and is not some magic bullet for cancer immunity.

And why shouldn't skin cancer victims get support?

user-pic

I am so sick of Will Ferrell. It's easy to seem funny when all you do is act like a 9 year old on a sugar rush.

user-pic

@Loren Fisher: Anything over spf 50 is a marketing/sales scam. 30 is all you need.

user-pic

i think i burned my eyeballs on those graphics- off to find a unicorn chaser now.

user-pic

So much more upbeat than Nick Cave's Scholarship for Cancer Victims.

user-pic

@GinaLouise: My mom told me that if the Irish get a good enough sunburn, they turn into fire imps.

user-pic

@Megalomania: How does one infringe on a copyright with cookies?

user-pic

@Loren Fisher:Quoted from [blog.pharmacymix.com] "Many skin care specialists will recommend a minimum of SPF 15 which blocks about 93 percent of UVB rays. Others, myself included, recommend a minimum of SPF 30, thereby blocking around 97 percent of UVB rays. Going higher in SPF rating won't block that much more. Studies suggest that a sunscreen with an SPF 60 rating blocks around 99% of the UVB rays."

Somehow I don't think the difference between the SPF 30 here and your beloved SPF 40 is not really significant/noticeable in normal usage. Maybe if you were on the surface of the sun the 1-2% different in blockage would be significant.

user-pic

I like how obvious they made it that his head is photoshopped on to another guys body. It's like they didn't even try.

user-pic

@Cyco: I think the obviousness is supposed to be the joke.

user-pic

I think its hillarious. Lighten up people.

user-pic

@Loren Fisher: I don't see why not have a charity for survivors. I mean, say you've spent years battling cancer and you finally won... I'm sure it's depleted all your finances and taken away the funds/time you otherwise would have used towards higher education. You probably wouldn't have time for school in between chemo treatments or the money to go. I'm sure you'd probably think college was out of your grasp after all that. I think it's nice that someone is helping them out and giving them a good start on the rest of their life.

There's something that always annoys me about people. Critism of kindness. It seems like there's always someone out to shit on any good works as not good enough.

Support spay and neuter policies? FOR SHAME with so many pets already starving and homeless!

Support feeding and caring for abandonned pets? FOR SHAME with so many starving children!!

Support feeding and caring for starving/empoverish children abroad? FOR SHAME! There are so many starving children here!!!

Support feeding and caring for starving/empoverished children here? FOR SHAME! There are children dying of cancer!!!!

As far as I'm concerned all good works are nobel and there's no benefit in rating their nobility.

user-pic

Those photos look horribly fake and Photoshopped. Also, ewwwww.

user-pic

@JamieSueAustin: Agreed. I get it all the time for daring to donate to lung cancer research because "those people" deserve their cancers, it's not as fluffy and fashionable as the pink cancer or children's cancer. *rolls eyes*

user-pic

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little...

user-pic

@OMG! Con Seannery!: Just tell him to use the sunscreen labeled "Sun Stroke" if you want to provide bodily harm- I'm sure they named it that for a reason ;-)

user-pic

@Megalomania: I'd go more with trademark or trade dress.

user-pic

@CFinWV: Which is ridiculous because people can get lung cancer without ever having smoked

user-pic

I might actually buy a bottle. I have a really hard time getting my husband to wear sunscreen and he likes Will Ferrell. Maybe this will do the trick. I'm sick of him trying to convince me his sunburn is a "red tan"

user-pic

@edwardso: I'm seriously tempted to get some for my dad. He's out in the sun constantly, but always forgets. The back of his neck looks like the tanned hide of a dead animal.

I think these are hilarious, personally, and if the money goes to a good cause (people who have had cancer and survived no doubt have some money issues in this country!) I'm all for it.

Personally, though, I use a minimum of SPF50...but I'm pale like a ghost and would rather keep my skin white and healthy than tan and leathery and/or cancery.

user-pic

@LanLOLa: Amen, i thought i was alone in thinking that

user-pic

Just to give you all just a little perspective, this isn't just some random cancer charity. Cancer for College awards scholarships to current & former cancer patients who are attending either a two year or four college and/or graduate school. Will Ferrell has been involved with them for years as its founder, Craig Pollard, a fraternity brother at USC is a two time Hodgkin's survivor.

It's great to do cancer research but sometimes the patients themselves could use a hand.

user-pic

@JamieSueAustin: It's the same as trying to rate the importance or magnitude of one person's suffering compared to another's, or the contests people get into over whose oppression is worse. As if it actually matters to the person who's living it!

If people spent all their time worrying about who deserves help the most, they'd never help anybody, because there might be someone worse off.

user-pic

@OMG! Con Seannery!: Kill him now! Kill him now! Spare us "Land of the Lost II: Dino Boogaloo"!

user-pic

@aftercancer: Thank you! People forget those who have actually beaten the disease and are still struggling.

user-pic

@floraposte: Actually, it's not photoshopped. Ferrell really does look like that.

brrrr

user-pic

@Loren Fisher: Anything over SPF 30 is a pure marketing gimmick. SPF is measured logarithmically and not linearly. So SPF 60 is not twice as much protection as SPF 30. It's about 5% more. And usually 5X the money.

user-pic

How dare he use his celebrity to do something charitable!!

user-pic

Wow, it's amazing how many people lose their sense of humor the older they get. Are you seriously critiquing their Photoshop skills? Really?? You don't think that was done on purpose? I also think that it's pretty sad that people are dogging a guy who is doing something for charity. Even if it's not for cancer research, its still for charity!

user-pic

I have to say that I think this is hilarious, and because it's for a good cause, I'll probably buy this. I know some people who would find it hilarious, even if they don't particularly find Will Ferrell funny.

user-pic

@RStui: Good idea! We were wondering what to get our dads for fathers day and since they both like Will Ferrell i think it would be perfect. My dad has been a landscaper for 30+ years and always needs sunscreen

user-pic

Or people can just donate money directly without having to buy the product...

just an idea

user-pic

@verucalise: that was probably the funniest thing he has ever done. And singing "dust in the wind" from Old school I think or some other movie.

user-pic

@gafpromise: yeah...the ugly photoshop job is part of the funniness (if that is a word).

user-pic

make sure to check his ingredients list for possible carcinogens!

http://consumerist.com/5021901/is-your-sunblock-effective

user-pic

@xeresy: Though you now know of this particular charity, so the product did its job - it drew your attention to the charity. Whether you buy the product or not is irrelevant - you are aware of the charity's existence now.

user-pic

@xeresy: Do you know how raising money for charity works?

Besides, it's summer. Plenty of people need sunscreen now. And several people said they plan on buying some for their fathers, since their fathers are a fan of WilL Ferrell, so they are helping this great cause while also making their dads happy. And you're begrudging them for it?

There's always at least one...

user-pic

@aftercancer: I think it's a lighthearted idea to bring funds to a worthy cause and a little laughter to everyone involved in the charity - both the organizers and the cancer survivors. If you can raise charitible funds with a bit of fun, all the better. Keeping positive is important.

And to those who hate Will, yes, Will can sometimes be annoying and "overdone" but he's still a funny and goodhearted guy. I know my kid is excited to see his new movie (with the dinosaurs) and it will be a fun and silly family afternoon. Nothing wrong with that.

user-pic

i want one just for the lulz (and the good cause). bookmarked.

user-pic

@Cyco: wooow it amazes me how many people don't have a sense of humor!
