Not-So Accurate Free Toys 'R' Us Shipping Promise Makes Reader Shoot Self In Foot
Toys "R" Us has a clever little "free shipping" trap going on with its Nerf guns, reader Chi writes. The site offers a couple of compelling deals that, when combined together, cancel one another out and pretty much screw you over.
You can buy the gun with free shipping, but if you choose to add the offer for free ammo you end up paying for shipping anyway, making the armor not so free.
Chi writes about how he got suckered in:
Like many people I have seen the Nerf guns and thought they all looked cool. So there was a special going on with free shipping and extra ammo. So I thought I could waste $11 on a nerf gun. The shipping for just the gun is $5.04, which is waived because of free shipping. Now you get a free pack of nerf ammo with the purchase, though you have to pay shipping. Now shipping for them together is $5.08. So you would think you would have to pay sales tax and $.04 for shipping right? No, they lower your free shipping to $2.82 so that they squeeze a couple more dollars from you. Not a huge deal but strange how the system changes how much free shipping you get. Damn, guess I really want that Nerf gun.
Unless Chi's nearest Toys 'R' Us is more than $2.82 worth of gas away, his buyer's remorse is justified. But hey, don't feel too bad for him. He's got a Nerf gun and ammo and you don't.

Sorry, but I'm not quite sure I see where the issue is.
*Normal circumstance: Nerf gun + shipping = 11 + 5.04 = 16.04
*Deal which Chi applied for: Nerf gun + free shipping = 11 + 0 = 11
*Deal + ammo offer = Nerf gun + free shipping on gun + free ammo + shipping for ammo = 11 + 0 + 0 + 5.08 = 16.08
*What he was actually charged = Nerf gun + free shipping on gun + free ammo + reduced ammo shipping = 11 + 0 + 0 + 2.82 = 13.82
I figure I'm somehow reading this incorrectly but I'm not sure where. Can someone explain?
I know this isn't totally related, but I'm totally done with the "* 'R Us" company. My friend was in Babies R Us the other day buying crib parts and the guy in front of her was being given a bunch of shit by this cashier because he had called ahead to do a return and she wouldn't let him. He had called ahead because it had been a gift and he no longer had a receipt. He had the gall to try to return something receiptless because his future child had been stillborn. When he had called, he had spoken to management and they had approved the return. The cashier, Sara, was totally unsympathetic and rude the entire time (even if the return couldn't have been processed, being rude to a customer is ALWAYS out of line). My friend proceeded to call corporate while in the store and they offered her a coupon. Nice.
So, even though I used to go there to play Japanese demo copies of Zelda games as a kid, I think I'll steer clear from now on. Plus, weren't they on here a while back for something about poor bathroom safety?
@vjmurphy: well not until you perform the thumbtack mod on all your nerf darts like I did. works way better than suction cups when hitting skin now.
@phoenix6666: In just adding ammo to my cart, it asks for $4.03 in shipping. In fact, it almost seems like he's getting a better deal on the shipping, unless I missed something.
@ajlei: I think there was a post awhile back about a bathroom stall collapsing on a mother and toddler. Babies R Us always struck me as overpriced and too proud of themselves when we last went in.
@PsiCop:
Maybe in your area... the one by me was still open last time I checked. I think I would have heard something if they were closing every store nationwide.
@PsiCop: there's one about 18 miles from me at a local snooty upscale mall [which i find incongruous, this being toys R us and all]
@TheBursar: I was thinking the exact same thing. Makes more sense than anything else I've heard today!
@undefined: i just picked up a bunch of transformers from the one in Orland Park. they were around 8 dollars a figure. i love that toys r us very clean.
@tonalanswer:
Agreed.
There's no free shipping on the ammo, and he's getting discounted shipping on it because he's combining it with another order.
Nothing to see here. Move on.
@temporaryerror: My brother's got it, it's friggin sweet. The Longshot (the "sniper rifle") is fun too.
I still long for the days of the Nerf Bow and Arrow though.
@PsiCop: They closed 87 of 700 stores 3 years ago. There's still plenty of them around. Considering they also bought FAO Schwarz like 3 weeks ago, I'd say they're still around.
Normal cost of gun: $11
Normal cost of shipping for gun: $5.04
Total normal cost: $16.04
Savings with free shipping: 5.04, or 31%
Normal cost of gun + ammo: $17
Normal cost of shipping gun + ammo: $5.08
Total normal cost: $22.08
Discounted shipping: 2.82
Total discounted price: 13.82
Savings: 8.26, or 37%
Can someone explain to me how that "pretty much screws you over"?
So what your saying is, he got half price shipping on a free item he got when he purchased another item with free shipping? Hhhmm, i think a call to the bbb is in order. Maybe we should launch an investigation into unfair business practices and publicly humiliate the CEO, who is undoubtedly sitting in the back of a limousine with a cuban cigar and a tumbler filled with 30 year old scotch laughing with his mistress and business partners about his exploitation of the unwitting masses of toy buyers. "The epitome of evil" the headlines will say, as he is disgraced and exiled from society.
@temporaryerror: i had that for a while. not worth it, always jams up. also, the longshot spring degrades pretty quickly. the maverick and recon cs-6 rock the house during most late-night raids.
@WillG: Heck toy manufacturers will sell anything, since it's all pretend killing people anyway. So even if armor isn't justified in reality, you can still sell it as part of the "Nerf battle experience".
Yeah, the math in the comments seems right. The only problem I can see here is if the advertisement didn't clarify that the extra ammo deal does not include free shipping on the entire order - something I'm sure the fine print states. Savvy consumerist readers read fine print, don't they? Otherwise, I'm seeing that he paid an extra two bucks for a few hours worth of harassing neighborhood cats. Worth it.
I don't think it's all that inaccurate. He got free shipping on the item for which he was promised free shipping. He then got an offer for a free item. He accepted. That free offer does not include free shipping, which is 95% of the time separate from the price of the product. Much like the price on the tag doesn't include tax, it usually doesn't include shipping.
Stop complaining.
@Murph1908: Yeah, sounds like the main complaint is that they didn't throw in free shipping on the free ammo.

It's ammo, as in ammunition, not armor.
