iPhone/Palm Pre Shootout At The Smartphone Corral
Watch Consumer Reports Electronics pit the iPhone and Pre against each other. Two phones enter. Only one can emerge victorious.
Well, not really. There are no real losers here, since they seem to think both phones are quite spiffy. This is just an overview—complete reviews are coming soon.

Sprint is hurtin' for business. I have been with them for years and was out of contract. Let me give you the run down of my plan for $103.99, all be cause I asked for it.
1500 minutes shared with my wife
unlimited data, text, net, with sprint TV (not that bad , several live channels) and GPS. This is normally 129.99 I have a 20% discount so the 103.99.
The good stuff (i.e. free of charge):
- I received and airave free of charge and free of service charges (99.00 equipment, 4.99 a month)
- Added pick 3 to both lines (like fav 5 for sprint but it's not advertised).
- Free international long distance - call internationally for no additional cost (normally 5.99)
- Free roaming (4.99)
In a 2 year period (contract time) I will save $1106.28 including my employer discount.
Now a comparable plan with att BASIC WITH NONE OF THE FREEBIES at 1400 minutes and unlimited data, sms it is $199 a month. Which would cost an ADDITIONAL 2280.24 for 2 years over my 103.99 plan that has a lot more.
I was so ready for an iphone but after what they gave me and the pre is pretty good I just couldn't pass it up...
@ospreyguy: How did you get the Airave tossed in for free? My mom lives on the fringe of decent reception and could really use one!
@ospreyguy: That's a pretty good deal. I don't like the length of contract personally but I do like the price.
@ospreyguy: That doesnt sound all that great....
I have Tmobile. My account has 3 lines all with unlimited txting. 2 of the lines are for Android phones so they both have unlimited data (3g). I have 1200 min to split between the 3 phones. Any call made to another tmobile customer doesnt cost air time. We all have the fav 5's, unlimited nights and weekends and there are no roaming charges for voice or data and im only paying $130 a month.
Did I mention I can tether my phone to a laptop or pc and share its 3g connection for no charge? It can be tethered either via wifim bluetooth or usb. Maybe you should ditch sprint?
@parad0x360: Oh and free long distance including international calls. Visual Voice Mail too by the way =)
I purchased a Palm Pre on release day, and I can say that my iPhone envy is gone now. Synergy is awesome. Having multiple calendars, multiple sources of contacts, and tons more that all work together seamlessly is pretty darn cool. I've used an iPhone, and although I used to really want one, I'd take my Pre over any iPhone. yeah, iPhone has a better apps catalog currently, but that will change fast. most of the features that iPhone does beat Pre in are just temporary, and the features that Pre beats iPhone (like synergy) will probably never come to iPhone.
The Pre reviewer seemed like kind of a dick. The Pre looks nice, and is the first machine that even comes close to the iPhone (kind of says a lot that it took Apple's competitors 2 years to do that).
One thing that bothers me is that I've seen several places say "to get a plan that compares with Sprint's, you'd have to spend X dollars with AT&T!" However, that's entirely a function of the unlimited SMS messages that Sprint gives you. Now of course that's a nice thing, but I don't think most users need that. I'm hard pressed to go through the 200 a month i get for $5 on my iPhone. In reality the services are basically priced the same (and in my area, AT&T has a better network).
@icruise: I would disagree, I would say that phone minutes are something that are becoming less needed.
Sprint's nights and weekends start at 7pm (ATT at 9pm), and many people aren't going to sit around on their phones and chat until the later hours anyways. ATT's plan also isn't unlimited nights and weekends like Sprint's is.Phones are being used for texting a lot more than you may think now.
I own BOTH an iPhone and a Palm Pre and used both as cell phones for about 2 weeks before switching to just the Pre. I still use my iPhone 3G as an iPod Touch, but I don't regret at all going to the Pre.
@AppleAlex: I think a lot of people misunderstood the Pre, it isn't so much an iPhone killer as a Blackberry killer. The Pre is for someone looking for a phone to keep your life all in one, the iPhone is more of a multimedia phone. The Pre is better with organization, the iPhone is better with Music/Videos.
@WeAre138: No, their 3G frequency is different from AT&T's. I already checked as I had planned to get a G1 and unlock it, but it will never connect to AT&T 3G network.
@icruise: I don't know about that. I've had my pre for 2 weeks and I've already sent over 200 messages. Maybe it's because the messaging on the Pre looks like IM. It's awesome.
On the other hand, I've barely used my anytime minutes because I talk mostly on the evening.
I also think just on principle ATT is an a-hole for gouging people the way they do on texting. It costs them nothing!
@AppleAlex: Anytime something comes out and is incredibly popular, over-hyped and in some cases overrated, there will always be a cadre of companies that will release a whatever killer. A great example is Halo.
@dumblonde:
Agreed. I would never consider an iPhone unless I could have one with the plan I have with Sprint. It's just a better deal than AT&T.
@Galius: Nah just the bad keyboard design. I tried one out at Best Buy and it was awful. The rest of the UI and hardware look/feel nice though. But the bad keyboard is the killer here...

I'm going to predict that Palm experiences a major fiasco with scratching on the screen of the Pre, a la iPod Nano.
