Have You Received Your Dell Multi-State Settlement Check Yet?

6502 views

Did you file a claim form in the Dell multi-state settlement earlier this year? Have you received your check yet? According to the FAQ posted by the attorneys general of states participating in the suit, Monday, June 22 was the deadline for Dell to mail checks to consumers.

Reader Josh in Florida hasn't received his check, and wonders whether anyone else who took part have received their checks yet. If Dell is sticking to their deadline, most if not all checks should have arrived by now.

UPDATE! Commenter Eukaryote provided relevant and useful information that answers the question posed by this post. Yay, Internet!

I am an Assistant AG, and a number of states had the checks mailed to the AG's office rather than directly to Consumers. That way Dell's lawyers didn't have the chance to get the final word in when they mailed the checks.

The checks will be mailed out either today or tomorrow, and consumers should receive them by the end of the week.

I didn't even know about the suit. It doesn't matter though since I live in NJ and wasn't eligible.

I tried like hell to figure out where to sign up, but the AG site for California seemed to not know a thing about it, nor brought up any relevant information given my search at the time. Sad, I bought 2 Dells (Dell plural = Dells?) and could have made some dinero.

This is the "Josh" who requested this post. Much thanks to Eukaryote for chiming in. My Florida AG rep on the phone only had a slight idea what I was asking about.

I got screwed over during the "window"; had 2 Dell monitors brand new, and both were damaged. Swapped them out and several times was sent broken refurbs. I swapped monitors with Dell a total of 8 times, and finally have 2 damaged 2001FP monitors on my desk here at home. One is quite dim, and occasionally fails to power up; the other has a big yellow stripe down the middle-left side of the screen. The worst part was the literal DAYS I spent with customer service talking to people in India. Because I didn't buy these monitors WITH a PC, they didn't have the proper code to generate a record and that was HELL for the first year and a half of problems, till Dell got with it and allowed for issues to be entered without a related computer.

If I DO get a check, the minute I do, I am checking with Dell recycling and shipping these giant albatross back to them and buying something reliable. What that might be, I don't know. Otherwise, it's Craigslists for these hunks of scrap. Emphasis on CRAP.

I never received a response from the California AG's office to my submission. I thought they were just backed up. Do I need to follow up w/ them?

I never knew about it. Would have been nice if Dell had released customer names from orders that would have been effected. I had ordered a laptop during the period in question and never received the $350 in rebates - even after sending them twice and faxing them once. I think I still have the fax confirmation receipt.

I got my $559.92 check this past Saturday. It was mailed from the West Virginia AG's office but the enclosed check was from "Kelley Drye Warren LLP IOLA" drawn on "Client Trust Account" on a New York City address I believe and dated 6/23/09 (the tear-off stub doesn't have the address and I already deposited my little windfal).

@BigFoot_Pete: In order to qualify you would've had to also had:
* A problem with a Dell financing offer
* A problem with a Dell rebate
* A problem with Dell financing
* A problem with a Dell repair, warranty or servicing

I bought a bunch of Dell stuff during the period on the settlement, but I never had any problems. Good news, bad news.

@Eukaryote: Cool. Hopefully the main article is updated with this info.

@Eukaryote:
I commented below this about getting my check (am I the only one doing the happy dance?, my finances have been a real struggle the past 7 months due to my health & an unexpected car repair out-of-town, etc., so this really REALLY helps me to build my emergency fund, I did splurge & took my 20 year old (foster) son out to dinner for his birthday today ($55.00, ouch, I never eat out & spent less than $100 a month on food)).

Anyway, our AG here in WV is great. He is a bit off and a self-promoter, but he sure does his job for consumers. Businesses hate this guy. He is very pro-active & responsive. In the 20 years I've lived here, Ive probably gotten half a dozen checks through his office, most of them I never even expected or knew I was due: Verizon overcharges, a late fee for a movie I returned that wasn't late, a settlement from the local branch of a national credit reporting agency for letting some business (may have been the same movie rental place I already mentioned) post a bunch of unjust negatives on peoples' reports, etc. They were only for a few bucks but at least the consumer got it. The right wing business folks here in the legislature have been trying to stop him from dispursing money to consumers, and want it to go into the general fund. They also have been trying to stop his frequent use of outside contract legal services when he needs some expertise his in-house attorneys don't have. He is very resourceful, sometimes even engaging law firms on contingency. His results speak for themselves, so I can put up with the little consumer awareness give-aways (pens, pencils, coin holders, etc.) that all bear his name.

*sigh*

wish I had heard about this ... go figure.

@czetie:

I thought Delli was the place all the Dell service calls go in India?

user-pic

I actually had all of these problems with Dell but my state wasn't included. The rep made me open a business account for some reason instead of a personal account, baited and switched the financing rate...mailing a letter to me after I had already received the computer saying I didn't qualify, failed to send me my rebate information, etc, etc, etc.

user-pic

PA here. I filed a claim and received a confirmation letter from the AG dated 4/17/09 but no check yet.

user-pic

I am still waiting for my DeBeer's check. What's with the holdup on that one?

user-pic

According to someone I just spoke with at the Florida Attorney General, they did not receive any checks from Dell. Additionally, according to the woman I spoke with, anyone that sent the Florida Attorney General a complaint was forwarded along / included in their portion of suit.

user-pic

I got my check today for exactly how much I asked. If you live in Florida, your checks are probably NOT sent to your AG, as mine was

1) sent from Kelley Drye & Warren LLP in Washington, D.C.
2) issued on June 19, 2009
3) written for June 23, 2009
4) postmarked June 29, 2009
5) received July 3, 2009

For me, case closed. Now to throw my 2001FP monitors "with problems" onto Craigslist or at the city electronics processing dump.

Just received my $72.21 check from the FL settlement. Came in an envelope from Kelly Drye & Warren LLP out of Washington, DC dated 6/29/09. Thank you Consumerist.
