Comcast Programming Guides Won't Display Porn Next To Kid's Shows Anymore

8617 views

Sorry kids, your days of catching enticingly named porn listed next to your cuddly family shows on Comcast's programming guide are over. Comcast will now place "blocks of dummy channels" to keep family programs away from the racy pay per view channels.

Earlier this month, Ian Goodson discovered this close encounter. It disturbed him, because his 9-year-old daughter regularly checks the programming guide to see what's playing on ABC Family HD and Disney HD. Even though all she might see is a few suggestive words, rather than the programs themselves, Goodson does not want his daughter to stumble upon the obscene while seeking out the wholesome.

"At noon there's pornography right above the kids' channel stuff," Goodson, 28, a sales rep who lives in Minnetonka. "It just doesn't make any logical sense at all."

Comcast already offers a way to screen what it calls "rather graphic" titles out of the programming guide, but even cable execs should realize that kids shows and porn shouldn't play anywhere near each other.

Comcast agrees with angry parent: no more close encounters between porn channels and kids' channels in program guide [The Star Tribune]

"It just doesn't make any logical sense at all."

Um ... the porn channels are the ones next to the kids channels in the numbers? Where's the missing logic?

It's not particularly well-thought-out, but it's not ILLOGICAL, Mr. Spock. :P

user-pic

Am I the only one who thinks it should be the parent's responsibility to turn on the channel filter. Just saying.

user-pic

@pmr12002: No, you're not. And we're both apparently going to hell for it.

user-pic

@pmr12002: nope...I agree. But that would mean that parent would have to do something other than just have sex and pop out a kid. I mean...you are talking real work here.

user-pic

@Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!): maybe illogical was a bad choice of words but I think you understand his point. The least the companies could do is put them many channels away from each other.

user-pic

@pmr12002: No, try as I could, I couldn't filter programs out of my comcast guide. I wanted to be able to skip over 600+ junk channels and couldn't do it. Don't even get me started on when I called their tech support...

user-pic

Many DVR's have a title block feature, however for some reasons most of the titles are rated Mature, not Adult, thus you would also have to block any movie with a Mature rating, which is basically any action flick. And the block can only be removed per channel. The DVR makers really need to make better parental controls in their software, its not easy to block the channels if the software isn't thought out well.

user-pic

How about dropping the cable? There's more to parenting than handing your kid a remote control.

user-pic

@Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!):
They just lumped all the HD channels + likey the ota ones + sub channels in a group in the 400's with ppv starting at 500 also inDemand ppv used to ppv movies now they just have adult ppv not all of is pron / ppv events and sports packs.

The cable channle line ups are a mess why can they be better grouped?

Now why can't they have the HD channels have the same number as there SD ones as well as hide SD duplicates / hide adult channles like direct tv can?

user-pic

@HRHKingFridayXX: Press Menu twice, go to Block: Channels, and select the channels you want blocked. Press A. Then go to Block: Titles, and select "Hidden." Titles blocked.

user-pic

@Shadowfire: Also, you can block by rating, and not just TV rating, but R, NC-17, and Adult.

user-pic

@meltingcube: See above. It is very simple to block either by channel or rating. And the rating block includes R, NC-17, and Adult, at least on Comcast DVRs.

user-pic

Wait, "Sister, Sister" isn't porn?

user-pic

@pmr12002: It's a private company taking a precaution it deems fit that really doesn't hinder anyone's ability to watch porn. I don't see what the problem is. "Just saying."

user-pic

Now if we could just get them to stop broadcasting the commercials at 2-3 times the volume of the regular programming, we'd be two steps down the road to decent service.

user-pic

@pmr12002:

Am I the only one who thinks it should be the parent's responsibility to turn on the channel filter. Just saying.

Along the same lines, why is it that parents have to "opt out" of pr0n instead of "opt in"? Why can't there be a "show me the pr0n" button instead of having to jump through hoops to turn it off?

user-pic

@anachro882: it's possible that some of the cable reps actually DO try to explain that:

user-pic

Damn. Guess kids will have to go back to what they did for generations.
Upstairs: adults, imbibing Martinis
Downstairs: kids playing Black Light Paint Spin-the-Bottle.

Got to give credit to the 'rents for thinking that moving the channel listing will keep the boys thinking about only basketball scores and girls about (what: I need help here) until they go to college, though.

user-pic

@rpm773: [struggling manfully not to make reference to Mississippi documentary auteurs, but ultimately failing]

user-pic

I don't know about Comcast Cable, but any Satellite service with browseable channels has the option to only display the channels you actually receive.

user-pic

this is not a bad way of doing this (although pointless), if they are still using the SARA software (as per the pic) there is no real options in SARA to hide those channels or their programming info

i suppose the alternative would be to just group all of the adult channels together, especially since by the way they suggesting the titles would still be visible anyway if you scroll down enough, lol

user-pic

@Trai_Dep: Dresses, make-up (if they're teens), and hair styles.

user-pic

@Eoghann: Because it's our world, and sex-loathing or kid-blindering parents are only renters in it.

user-pic

@MikeM_inMD: Hey, so long as the words "Miley Cirus" or "preteen pageant queen" aren't in play, I'm happy. :)

user-pic

@Trai_Dep: Because it's our world, and sex-loathing or kid-blindering parents are only renters in it.

Oh how I wish that were true.

user-pic

@pmr12002: While it is a parent's responsibility (or someone who doesn't want to look at porn titles regardless), every cable company, box, and software is different. It's not necessarily that easy.

The only good thing when I had Adelphia was that it had a very easy menu and it had a selection "Hide Adult Programming Titles." It didn't block rated R, it didn't block every channel. It was simple to use and did it just perfectly.

user-pic

@anachro882: I never realised that having kids and cable in the same house meant it was mandatory to use the TV as a babysitter all day! Now, thanks to your insightful comment, I know better.

user-pic

@Ichiro51:

Exactly. I like porn as much as the next guy, possibly more, but I can also understand why a parent might not want to have to explain what a "Busty Virgin" is to a 5 year old.

I'd much rather see people complain to companies and have them make minor changes that keep everyone happy than, say, demand more legislation to fix the problem.

user-pic

@meltingcube: In this case, mostly what Comcast needs is better software. And hardware. I had one of those Comcast DVRs for two months, and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Hard to navigate, hard to customize a channel list, hard to program a recording. It would lock up frequently, forcing me to reboot it, after which it would lose the program guide, which took hours to replace, and I was hating it BEFORE it barfed all over itself twice taking my recorded shows with it.

user-pic

@Ryan H: No such luck with Comcast, at least with the DVR box they gave me. You could set up a favorites list, but it wouldn't let you default to it.

user-pic

@Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!): It's not Logical to number them that way... kids programing and PPV have nothing to do with each other, and it's not even the HD PPV.

So... it's both nonsensical and illogical (a.k.a. they have a semi-random channel numbering system).

But I do <3 you eyebrows, and I get what you were going at.

user-pic

thoese boxes are crap. There should be an option to just remove the channel so it doesnt show up in the guide or when you scan thru channels. There is so much crap but you are forced to see it all. Just get a tivo. I have three and you can remove all the channels you want. When you do the only way to get to them is type the number in manually.

user-pic

@Wombatish: I think grading finals makes me cranky and nitpicky. :)

user-pic

@pmr12002:
Yup, I have to agree, if the parent isn't using the existing method for blocking his kids from seeing the channels & titles he shouldn't get to complain and make the provider change the way things work.
There is ALREADY a way to make it work, USE IT.

This is no better then when websites complain about google & the internet wayback machine indexing their sites because they are too stupid to use a robots.txt and expect them to ask permission before indexing.

Excuse me I have to go take a couple of showers now as I feel very dirty for actually defending comcast.

user-pic

Both of my Comcast boxes already allow you to set it so all pornos show up as "Adult Programming"

user-pic

@Shadowfire: Thanks! Already cancelled the cable though.. hah

user-pic

Heaven forbid a child should ask their Dad what "virgin" means when seeing the word on TV. That might bring up the whole birds and the bees thing, which is best handled in college. Much better they ask the pastor in church about the Virgin Mary. WAY less embarrassing.

user-pic

@Eoghann: Funny, i feel the same way about all the !#@#&*(@ shopping (and sports) channels. All that crap should be off by default. In fact, all systems should come configured they way *I* want by default!

Seriously though, stupid cable/dish providers, just go to freaking a la carte already so I can buy the 6 channels I want without 144 more useless ones!

user-pic

@Ryan H: My satellite receiver has that option, but it's very easy to accidentally turn it off (just press the "Guide" button more than once). That, and as far as it's concerned, I DO have all the PPV channels--it's an available option that I haven't yet paid for.

That said, I've blocked the 'adult' channels from the show listing, so the adult PPV channels aren't listed at all.

user-pic

@j-o-h-n: Exactly... what's next, shout Comcast block Nancy Grace by default, and BET? I find QVC much more offensive than pron, they should block that too!

Until someone can PROVE that pron actually harms kids, this is just an overblown reaction by those who brought you raisingate at the super bowl..

user-pic

@MinorAnnoyance: Wha-What did you say? I couldn't hear you.

user-pic

So is that "show" still on?

/Kidding

user-pic

It's funny because I had this exact same problem with Adelphia or Insight (cant remember which) Spongebob in one slot and Hot women who love Italian Sausage in the next. After I complained about it they changed it within a month. I had a hard time believing I was the only one that noticed it.

user-pic

@anachro882: You want to come over to my house on a day when it has been raining for the past 5 days straight and watch my kids who have gone through every game and coloring book in the house at least twice. Be over here tomorrow at 6:00pm.

user-pic

As a side note, this cable box is in the Explorer series, manufactured by Scientific-Atlanta. I know this because I used to have one of these cable boxes, more specifically, the 8300HD.

user-pic

@Trai_Dep:

It's your world? Must be why it sucks so much. Thanks a lot.

Sincerely,
A Parent Who Doesn't Hate Sex (OBVIOUSLY) But Thinks Kids Shouldn't Be Exposed to Inappropriate Adult Fare Before They Are Ready to Understand It or When They're Just Trying to Find Out When a Show Comes On

user-pic

@David Birney:

You're not the only one. I've complained about it to Verizon in the past. They finally changed it when someone threatened to contact the FCC about it. Interesting how that works...

user-pic

@Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!): very oddly amateurish method for keeping adult channels separate from kids' chans. dummy channels? so kids have to scroll for an extra 2 seconds to see the names anyway? why not just a simple setting that changes all PPV names to 'Pay Per View event' or something and when dad goes looking for porn, he might have to take the extra 15 seconds to go in, enter a password and unlock the titles temporarily.

i mean, isn't it more logical to remove the dangling carrot altogether instead of just reeling it in a bit higher?

user-pic

@David Birney: I'm surprised that they could make an entire cooking show featuring flu-impaired female chefs that enjoy Italian cuisine.
