Black & Decker Spacemaker Coffeemakers Recalled

2997 views

This is too big to save for a recall roundup - 670,000 Black & Decker coffeemakers sold at K-Mart, Kohl's, Target, Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Amazon.com have been recalled. Hot water can overflow out of the carafe, and some owners have sustained second degree burns. [Consumer Reports] [Recall Site]

If they recall every drip coffeemaker that overflows when the basket is slightly misaligned, we would all be reduced to using percolators.

I used to remove the no-drip valve from the bottom of the basket when I bought a coffee machine, but this sometimes caused the water to flow through the grounds too quickly. Lately, I've just been extremely careful to check the valve... especially when I'm using the timer.

I have that coffee maker and have never had a problem

I never saw the point in a coffee maker. I always thought they were made for like Starbucks or people running a small coffee shop.

but on topic, what isn't being recalled these days?

user-pic

More evidence in a growing list of reasons humans are doomed: (slow-witted man) "Hey! Theres scalding hot water coming out of my coffee maker... let me test it to make sure its actually hot... OW!!"

(Black & Decker) "People are morons. Better recall it before we get sued."

user-pic

@AppleAlex: I agree, isn't that what coffee shops are for? Why would I want to make my own coffee? What's next, cook my own dinner?

user-pic

@AppleAlex: Having used both a percolator that sat on the stove, and a coffee press, I'll take a coffee maker any day of the week. Not an espresso machine; just a Braun coffee maker.

user-pic

What a stupid recall. "If you seat the basket wrong, the lid doesn't close, and the water will leak." No shit.

user-pic

Another quality product made in China!

user-pic

@undefined: Funny I was considering buying this very model..saw it in a Kmart ad a few weeks ago. Glad I didn't.

user-pic

@AppleAlex: I feel the same way about watching DVDs versus having sex.
Wait. What?!

user-pic

But the main question is hot water burn baby?

But what if the baby wants some tea, or in this case coffee, what about a nice hot bath?
Does hot water still burn baby?

but really, if you can't work your coffee machine correctly, then don't use it.
I can understand the recall if everything seems like it is alligned, but turns out the machine sucks and isn't alligned.

Shouldn't be using SUPER hot water to make coffee anyway. Just got an Aerobie AeroPress and am loving it - 175F FTW.

Well, ten more nominees for the Darwin award. My experience with this model leads me to believe that HOT water overflowing from the brew basket is operator error. Every time. On at least two occasions, since purchase six months ago, I awoke to discover a counter top covered with half brewed coffee and grounds. Cursing, at first, the coffee maker, I commenced my cleanup. Naturally the cleanup leads to moving the carafe. Jinkies, I evidently failed to ensure the carafe was properly seated under the brew basket. No burns, just a mess and a firm reminder to properly place the components before retiring for the evening.

The name of the coffee pot refers to all the extra space it will make when it burns down your house.

user-pic

@Radi0logy: The NJ State Drivers Manual has the line "If your dashboard is on fire, do not grasp burning wire with your bare hands". It's there for a reason.

user-pic

@oldgraygeek: Yeah, but every coffee maker isn't above the counter waiting to drop a guillotine of super heated water.

user-pic

Hi guys, former owner here! The damn thing leaks, even when used correctly. And the carafe pour spout spilled (yes, hot) coffee everywhere unless you removed the lid from the carafe while pouring. I didn't need to wait for a recall to get rid of it.

user-pic

@larrymac: ahaha I love lmgtfy. Thanks for making my day.

user-pic

I was actually looking at this coffemaker Saturday at Kohls but decided I didn't want to mount a coffeemaker. Glad I decided that now.

user-pic

@AppleAlex:

1) It's way cheaper to make your own coffee, and if you get a good variety, it's often tastier than coffee-to-go.

2) I prefer a French press, but this requires waiting for the water kettle to boil, pouring the water into the press, waiting for it to steep, then pushing the plunger; our coffee maker, on the other hand, is programmed to turn itself on at 6:15 am and have the coffee all hot and ready to drink when we go downstairs every morning. So: Convenience.

user-pic

@Trai_Dep:

ROFL! You FTW. :-D

user-pic

@ncpeters: I mounted a coffee maker once. Thought it might be just like an apple pie.

I was wrong. So very, very, wrong. It still burns :(

user-pic

@AppleAlex: I'm pretty sure two major goals are a) they come with timers so the coffee can start on its own and be ready when you wake up and b) to prevent the uncaffeinated from driving to the coffee shop before they've had caffeine.

But I don't know. I just have a Senseo for when coffee-drinkers visit, because wow are they touchy when you suggest Diet Coke as an alternate morning caffeine delivery system.

user-pic

@Radi0logy: Once in high school I worked at a small company where we used a variety of chemicals on a daily basis, and we used to get potassium permanganate in big 55-gallon drums with a one-way pressure valve and a giant warning on them that said "Do not pee in the potassium permanganate."

Which means that someone (clearly a man, because it would have been anatomically impossible for a woman) not only thought it would be a good idea to pee in a 55-gallon drum of chemicals that dye your skin deep, indelible purple, but was so desperate to do so that he stuck his penis up into a one-way pressurized valve and attempted to pee against the flow.

The least of his problems would have been the indelibly purple penis!

There is simply no level of stupid to which humanity will not eventually stoop. And I say that as someone who stuck my finger in a fan to see if it would REALLY cut off my finger like my mom kept claiming. (No.)

user-pic

@AppleAlex: I'm trying to come up with reasons why one would say there was no use or the coffeemaker. Lots of people have cited great reasons: coffee on the go without waiting for water to boil, timers, variety...and there's no need to spend more money by going to the coffee shop. I'm putting a coffeemaker for my cubicle.

user-pic

@ncpeters:
I discourage customers from buying this coffee maker(if they ask my opinion). WE always get them returned due to leaking.

user-pic

@Eyebrows McGee (now with more baby!): As a guest, when my host suggests Coke over fresh-brewed morning coffee, I assume I've drastically overstayed my welcome.

Michelle Moore Coffey

Can they recall it for making absolutely the crappiest coffee ever?

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265:

But why is it that people who drink coffee can be lovely, clean people, yet always fail to notice THE GROUNDS AND DRIPPAGE AND GENERAL GROSSNESS surrounding their coffee machine? I have yet to see someone's coffee station lack the above.

user-pic

@SJActress:

Come on over to my house. My husband is positively anal about keeping the machine and its surroundings spotless at all times.

user-pic

My Senseo overflows with hot water all the time, but according to my husband it's because I'm doing it wrong.
