Despite billions promised by PhRMA, generics remain a better deal for seniors "It may be good news for those who are on a drug for which there are no generic alternatives-and staying on a necessary brand name is better than skipping prescription medications altogether. But even at half price, many of the most popular brand name drugs are still far more expensive than generics, which have repeatedly proven to be just as safe and effective." Generics are fine but they are not necessarily the same as the brand name drug. The generic has to have the same active ingredients but the fillers, coatings, etc. can all be different. Sometimes this makes a difference and sometimes not but if my doctor prescribes name brand drug X, I expect him to be able to tell me whether the generic will have the same performance.

@H3ion: YES.

NO ONE in the medical industry ever mentions this when prescribing things, only "oh, it's a generic, it's the same". And when I told my doctor about a bad reaction to a generic, she didn't believe me.

I'm sick of pharmacists, insurance companies and doctors being facetious or evasive about this issue. Yes, it's probably not going to kill you. But it may give you discomfort.

@H3ion:
Agreed. They should just have another category for generics then, a Generics Plus (or whatever), which means that even the fillers are identical for brand names.
