Their products probably won't kill or maim anyone for hours after they go on sale.

If you think american manufacturers take shortcuts to get a product to market, you ain't seen nothing yet...

user-pic

Is there anyone else that is concerned about this? The chinese can't even make non-lethal toys now they're going to be building 3 ton SUVs!

user-pic

I guess I'm just happy that they aren't actually making the military vehicle, just the abomination GM put out that required them to buy the name Hummer, which is why the "H2" was what they called the 2nd model.

user-pic

Does this mean that the "Chinese Poison Train" is going to become the "Chinese Poison Hummer" in Consumerist posts?

user-pic

4 posts and no 'hummer' jokes? We're slacking, people.

user-pic

Just don't lick the paint and you should be fine

user-pic

I'm not sure what this means. Were there actually entire plants dedicated to nothing but building the Hummer and that's what they bought? Or, did they just buy the brand "Hummer" and vehicle designs?

user-pic

@HiPwr: Just the brand. GM still owns the factories.

user-pic

@WiiPoleNotIncluded_GitEmSteveDave: That is a bit of a relief. I was not comfortable with the idea of handing over manufacture of a key military vehicle to the Chinese. Glad someone finally clarified it was only the civilian versions.

user-pic

@WiiPoleNotIncluded_GitEmSteveDave: GM never made the military vehicle. It was built by AM General, which also made the H1 and H2 (the H3 is built by GM).

user-pic

Woot! Cheap vehicles coming to North America shortly? YAY!

(I'm not worried, they still have to pass at least basic safety standards. Would make a fine commuter vehicle, if your commute doesn't involve highways.)

user-pic

@armandbrown: I have absolutely no intention of purchasing a Hummer so this doesn't bother me as much...and with the recession and gas prices spiking again, I hope to keep seeing less and less of them, especially after 2009 models.

user-pic

Could be worse. It could have been bought by Chery:

user-pic

@armandbrown: My computer was made in Taiwan, and I'm betting yours was made over there as well. You're not pressing every key wondering if your computer will blow up, are you?

user-pic

@MooseOfReason: Taiwan and China are two different countries, even if the Chinese don't believe it.

user-pic

@MooseOfReason: Whoa, that's one Mount Everest of ignorance you just displayed there.

user-pic

"Chinese truckmaker set to buy Hummer The Hummer will go well with the rest of China's portfolio."

Are you implying that this privately owned business is somehow shadow-owned by the Chinese government? The way that this ostensibly open-minded and racially-neutral website openly bashes China and the Chinese is somewhat unsettling.

user-pic

@squinko: Taiwan = Legitimate government of China; Red China = evil commie bastards who 20 years ago today in Tiananmen Square went on an evil rampage.

user-pic

Nothing better to celebrate the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre than for the Chicoms to buy Hummer!

user-pic

@Radi0logy: Like bashing the evil Chicom bastards is wrong, especially what happened 20 years ago today?

user-pic

@pecan 3.14159265: Even though AM General built the H2 in Mishawaka under contract to GM, it's still pretty much a modified Tahoe.

user-pic

@I Love New Jersey: Again, lumping in a private company with the Chinese government is the kind of racial stereotyping I thought we as a society were trying to overcome. I know! Lets drive to Chinatown tonight and punch a Chinaman in the nose cause of Tienamen square! That'll show those commies.

user-pic

@I Love New Jersey: I guess it should come as no surprise that an American is unable to distinguish the people of China from their government. Go go open-mindedness!

user-pic

@Radi0logy: Some of us do, but there is a symbiotic relationship between government and industry there you know.

user-pic

@GearheadGeek: if they can bring the base price down to, say, 25k, i'd buy two. in cash. today. the ecm can be re-programmed.

user-pic

@Rectilinear Propagation: Pioneering the negative-four-star rating. It looks like they replaced the metal with cardboard.

user-pic

@I Love New Jersey: Didn't you hear? Nothing happened in Tiananmen Square 20 years ago? Jeez. Where do you get your news?

user-pic

That's great. Lead based paint, melamine in the interior, and it will run on coal.

user-pic

@Snarkysnake: Yeah seriously. You thought it was bad that Chinese cars killed their passengers, just wait till they start killing their passengers AND the people they hit.

user-pic

@GearheadGeek: BS on your Tahoe claims. They aren't even remotely similar. The H2 chassis is a modified Suburban chassis. The H2 has air ride suspension, not available on the Tahoe. The transfer case on the H2 is only available on the H2. The H2 has a Vortec 6.0, the Tahoe has a 5.3. The rear diff on the H2 is electronically locking, arguably the best on the market. The Tahoe, not so much. Take them off road and there is no comparison.

Quit regurgitating the BS you hear from Hummer haters.

user-pic

@Radi0logy: If the government is out of control, the people are to blame. Ultimately, the people vastly outnumber those running the government. They should rise up and take their country back.

user-pic

@jimconsumer: The Tahoe is a short wheelbase Suburban, they are quite similar in many respects. If you were a careful reader, you would have seen the word "modified" in my post, and none of the differences you pointed out would be particularly surprising to see someone do when MODIFYING their own truck or SUV to make it a better off-roader. The H2 is competent offroad, for the subset of owners who actually ever take one farther offroad than the parking lot at the mall. That doesn't make it a better vehicle, or any more starkly different from a Tahoe than a Suburban is. It ain't no H1.

user-pic

@Trai_Dep: If mine is a 'Mount Everest of ignorance,' what would you call Taiwan's ignorance in calling themselves a "Republic"?

Their president has the power to declare war, command the military, conclude treaties, and dissolve the house of legislature.

Hello? Read this line from the Declaration of Independence:
"He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people."

They're not a Republic and they might as well be part of China if that's how their government runs.

user-pic

@jimconsumer: An easy sentiment to espouse from someone sitting behind the safety of a powerful, free country that has never had to risk his life for his freedom.
