I found it interesting to see that Koenisegg, who makes hypercars, is buying Saab.

I would love to take a Koenisegg CCXR for a drive around a track.

I didn't see the Federal Government listed.

C'mon guys, you couldn't even remember that VW owns Lamborghini? I don't know why people who aren't automotive enthusiasts continue to try to write articles about cars...

user-pic

I thought VW owned Rolls Royce or Bentley. I know the Phaeton was rebadged as one of those at one point. I figured they owned them or had a majority share or something. Didn't know Toyota had such investments in subaru either. I wonder why they don't use some of the AWD stuff in any Toyotas?

user-pic

@Starfury: Forget the track. Drive this to the hottest spot in town and wait for the cute high society ladies to appear :)

user-pic

@downwithmonstercable: VW owns Bentley, and the VW Phaeton was actually a rebadged Audi A8, I think that's what you're thinking of.

Certain other assets such as Renault, Citroen, Skoda and SEAT are missing from the chart but they're not in the US market.

Why did Ford need to dump Mazda?

user-pic

@nataku83: Ok, I'll try to make this my last post... Suzuki and Mitsubishi, both of which were previously tied to GM and Chrysler, respectively, probably at least deserve to be mentioned as well (Isuzu's gone). There are a ton of smaller companies missing, but I'll just let that slide...

I had many heated debates with my then boyfriend regarding VW's ownership of Audi. I had nothing to prove it other than the fact that my contracts/warranties/etc always referred to both brands and pre VW redesign they looked really similar. I'm so forwarding this to him!

Isn't Opel being bought by Magna International?

user-pic

Does anyone own a piece of Mitsubishi anymore? Love my 07 Outlander!

Tata Motors (India) owns: Jaguar and Land Rover

I'm curious what they'll be doing with those. Cuz they sure as hell wont sell in India.

user-pic

@TinkishDelight: Golf, Jetta, Beetle, A3, A4 and TT are all built on the same vehicle platform. As I mentioned above, so were the A8 and VW Phaeton. Since it's been sold in the US, Audi has been part of VW - it's less of a separate company owned by VW and more of a brand produced by them, like Toyota / Lexus, Honda / Acura, Nissan / Infiniti, etc...

user-pic

@nataku83: Interesting. I also wasn't aware of the Honda/Acura pairing, but it makes sense.

user-pic

@nataku83: Ah yeah A8 also. I just found it though - not actually rebadged, but same body/frame/whatever as the Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur

user-pic

@MostlyHarmless: I thought it was kinda funny that such a prestigious brand is now an 'indian' car. It's as if Hyundai bought BMW.

Cerberus lost their stake in Chrysler manufacturing.

Lotus is owned by Proton of Malaysia.

Audi has been a Volkswagen brand for 40 years (it was never that clear to me either).

Isuzu is still a big vehicle manufacturer, but as far as passenger vehicles in the US they are down to a couple of re-badged Chevys.

user-pic

What about Lotus? aren't they partly owned by GM and Toyota?

user-pic

I went looking to find out who owns the other 80% of Jeep... I didn't find it, but the Jeep wikipedia article did say that Jeep and Hummer have been fighting it out in the courts over who has the right to use a 7 slot front grill. Seriously.

user-pic

@nataku83:

Technically, Porsche owns a big chunk of VW, which owns Audi, which in turn owns Lamborghini.

Bentley, Bugatti and Skoda are also in there too.

It's a pretty complicated and confusing structure, but nothing like IKEA's or Samsung's.

user-pic

@kingmanic: yes though technically GM will share ownership with Magna with Magna owning the majority share

user-pic

@downwithmonstercable: So are you saying that Indians and Indian brands are somehow inferior?

user-pic

@MostlyHarmless: Who wants a Jag or a Land Rover when you can play with Tatas all day?

user-pic

@Cant_stop_the_rock: I can't find it referenced anywhere else but he Consumer Reports article that Chrysler has a 20% stake in Jeep.

user-pic

@nytmare: Actually, Isuzu is down to nothing. They folded US sales back in January this year.

IIRC, they sold just around 7,000 vehicles for all of 2007; Ford sold that many F-series in a half a week.

user-pic

@nataku83: You went off track with A4. It's not on the Golf/A3 platform.

user-pic

@Blue387: The chart is intended for what is only sold in the US.

user-pic

@Dansc29625:

Um, We know that. Cant_stop_the_rock is asking who owns the other 80%

user-pic

Hummer is being sold to a Chinese company? Oh, the irony!
