Trent Reznor Compares Apple To, Gasp, Walmart
NIN front man Trent Reznor is angry at Apple for rejecting the new Nine Inch Nails iPhone app update because it contains "objectionable content." The objectionable content referenced is the song 'The Downward Spiral,' which you can buy on iTunes. Reznor posted the rejection letter on NIN's forums, and then launched into a rant about censorship — comparing Apple to Walmart. (NSFW language inside)
I'll voice the same issue I had with Wal-Mart years ago, which is a matter of consistency and hypocrisy. Wal-Mart went on a rampage years ago insisting all music they carry be censored of all profanity and "clean" versions be made for them to carry. Bands (including Nirvana) tripped over themselves editing out words, changing album art, etc to meet Wal-Mart's standards of decency - because Wal-Mart sells a lot of records. NIN refused, and you'll notice a pretty empty NIN section at any Wal-Mart. My reasoning was this: I can understand if you want the moral posturing of not having any "indecent" material for sale - but you could literally turn around 180 degrees from where the NIN record would be and purchase the film "Scarface" completely uncensored, or buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto where you can be rewarded for beating up prostitutes. How does that make sense?
You can buy The Downward Fucking Spiral on iTunes, but you can't allow an iPhone app that may have a song with a bad word somewhere in it. Geez, what if someone in the forum in our app says FUCK or CUNT? I suppose that also falls into indecent material. Hey Apple, I just got some SPAM about fucking hot asian teens THROUGH YOUR MAIL PROGRAM. I just saw two guys having explicit anal sex right there in Safari! On my iPhone!
Come on Apple, think your policies through and for fuck's sake get your app approval scenario together.
Reznor's developer also slammed Apple for letting the issue get in the way of a bug fix. Apparently, they've been trying to update the app to stop it from crashing, but can't get Apple to approve the new version because of the content.
"Apple is not allowing us to make the current app more stable because there is "objectionable" content online (yes on the internet). so we are essentially not allowed to fixed bugs unrelated to the issue."

@pecan 3.14159265: Oh come on! The line: "I just saw two guys having explicit anal sex right there in Safari! On my iPhone!" actually made me laugh out loud!
I thought he had gone "soft" over the years, but apparently he's gotten a lot funnier.
@pecan 3.14159265: He's making a legitimate point. If anyone is being prissy, it's Apple. He is pointing out the hypocrisy and inconsistency of Apple.
It's effed the fuck up that they approved his app, but now won't approve bug fixes because of the word fuck.
What he says makes sense though. Especially if you look at it through the concept of the cultural diamond (and a little bit of Gans).
People obtain meanings through the media. If the uncensored albums aren't there, there's not much to stop them from obtaining it through the other uncensored media that Walmart is selling.
Also, if you try to say that "Scarface" is Art, while NIN is only art, that doesn't really fly. There is no legitimate difference between "high class art" (Art with a capital A) and "low class or popular art" (art with a lower a). All art is equal and any differences depend solely on who you ask.
@HiPwr: It is a form of cencsorship. Even if they have that right, it doesn't make it not censorship.
@LJKelley: That's the main reason why I'm a little dismissive of his rant..it's anger, pure and simple, laden with expletives that are unnecessary to make a good point. The only reason he's being heard on this is because he's a musician who is respected when it comes to things like fighting censorship in music...but how he comes across is ineffective at best, ridiculous at worst, and won't actually solve the problem.
@korybing: He wanted to tell everyone how srs Wal*Mart was to get Cobain to rise up from the grave and re-do the songs.
They mean business.
@sicknick: I just saw two guys having explicit anal sex right there in Safari! On my iPhone!
If that part is true...well, I just didn't realize...not that there's anything wrong etc.
@pecan 3.14159265: dear pecan pie, shut the hell up.
this is a serious issue. the approval process is ridiculous and needs to be scrutinized by someone with a loud enough voice. He's right on all accounts, and your one line comment doesn't refute anything. next time.. don't say anything.
@dwhuntley: yeah, god forbid anyone ever feel passionate about anything at all.. especially something you created being shot down or hrmed for unnecessary reasons.
@vladthepaler: maybe if you were a genius you'd be able to speak however you want as well.. but you're not.. so...
NIN used to be amazing. I thought that they couldn't get any lower after releasing Perfect Drug - I wanted to like it so badly - I tried to like it - it just sucked - the muse was gone. Now this is just sad - poor D-bag is trying to cash in on his golden years when he was actually good at somthing, and cries like a little biz when apple stands in his way. Reminds me of Al Bundy talking about his HS football games.... What is next for Trent? Playing accustic solo "Hurt" in the lounge at the airport hilton for a free sandwich and tips?
@HiPwr: I wonder what would have happened if Nirvana and everyone else didn't break down and change everything, instead choosing to not let their albums be sold at Wal-Mart. Do you think Wal-Mart would have relented? After all, it's a revenue stream for them as well.
But, the policies are fairly inconsistent, only certain things are blocked but others aren't.
Of course, I don't use Apple products, so it's not as huge an issue with me.
@pecan 3.14159265: Meanwhile, you can buy the app "Akapee" for $1. It's a virtual urination simulator. So, hearing an f-bomb is apparently enough to scar a child's life but a virtual urination simulator that lets you... enjoy the realm of taking a ePiss is fun for the whole family.
But hey, it's Apple, the family friendly company that highlighted "Milshake" as a chart topping song on the front page of the iTunes store a while back. Because nothing's ever wrong with a dumptruck of innuendo.
@pecan 3.14159265: I agree, not because Trent is wrong, but because people don't care. That's why he should get over it.
He bitched and whined about Walmart censorship. He carried the good flag and waved it about and yet consumers still bought up the stuff. He's doing it again and pointing out Apple's hypocrisy but, hey, you know it's not going to slow down iPhone apps nor increase jailbreaking.
Righteous indignation doesn't suit a man his age.
You have to "confirm" that you're old enough to buy the explicit song, why not just do the same for the app?
Then it's not a double standard...
Same thing with there being a "clean" version of the song and app.
Not to defend Wal-mart or anything, but I'm sure they got sick of carding kids for buying CDs, since not everyone is aware of the idea of an "explicit" CD, compared to like, an "R" movie. So they invented the "clean" copy, and all way good. And admittedly, it's a lot easier to censor a CD than a movie... honestly, it's not a 100% fair comparison.
Technically, you should be carded to buy that Scarface or GTA, just like you would an "explicit" NIN CD. But Wal-mart is lazy and doesn't care, so they just don't card people... that's Wal-mart's carding policy, not their censorship policy.
Profanity is censored to protect the children.
But, profanity is childish.
*Head explodes*
Wow, there are a lot of prudes here. It must suck to have your work barred from a a large market for completely arbitrary reasons. I don't use a cell; do any phones match the ipod for functionality/popularity? I mean, could another company take advantage and market his product on their phone instead? NIN fans are likely to be tech savvy and sensitive to issues like this, judging from the way he's distributed his music in recent years. And I apologize if I'm totally misunderstanding the whole smart phone thing.
@vladthepaler: So, you're saying he doesn't need to have an opinion, but have his words filtered through a professional speech writer? That's like putting a condom on the freedom of speech. You're still talking, but now it's just a little safer.

Dear Trent Reznor,
Get over it.
