Sony Plans To Make The Wii and 360 Jealous By Pumping Your PS3 Full Of Free Music Videos
You just can't win if you're a gamer these days. Sure, you may like the console you've got, but you know your jealous of the exclusive games and features on the systems you don't have. Even if you own all three current-gen home consoles you feel guilty about neglecting one or two of them.
But one nice thing about the situation is that competition makes all three systems improve as time passes. Code jockeys can redefine the consoles' capabilities on the fly via downloads and firmware upgrades. The Xbox 360 has added Netflix streaming, the Wii added online polls and avatar-designing competitions and now the PS3 is upping the ante in the digital arms race by launching a service that streams music videos through the console.
Destructoid's Jim Sterling reports the add-on, dubbed VidZone, is due this summer and will feature "thousands" of music videos.
The bigwigs in charge claim that VidZone is "backed by several Major record labels as well as thousands of Independent labels", and will be available in the music section of the PS3's XMB menu. Users will be able to compile and save their own video library, which will feature custom playlists that can be stopped, skipped and rewound at leisure. PSP owners will be able to create these playlists on their handhelds as well, which will then be streamed on the PS3.
Next we'll wait and see what Nintendo and Microsoft will do to one-up Sony.

I always wondered who in their right mind would purchase a music video on XBL. $1.50 $2 almost for a music video.
I mean Youtube the video if you want to watch it or turn over to Fuse or something if you have cable [since MTV no longer shows videos] but paying $2 for a music video always made me wonder who was stupid enough to punk down the cash for such a worthless investment.
Maybe XBL will make music videos free now.
@outinthedark: Honestly, Blue Ray has a much higher attraction than watching music videos. Hell, a sign of the times, MTV hardly ever shows videos anymore. Why? Because there's much more market appeal in "reality" shows.
@SanDiegoDude: blah. we need an edit button here. Just wanted to add... C'mon XBL, one up them by giving us Pandora! =)
You can use Pandora on a PS3 through the interweb browser. It's kind of clunky but it works.
GRAMMAR LESSON
your ≠you're
Your
-pronoun
1. (a form of the possessive case of you used as an attributive adjective): Your jacket is in that closet. I like your idea. Compare yours.
2. one's (used to indicate that one belonging to oneself or to any person): The consulate is your best source of information. As you go down the hill, the library is on your left.
3. (used informally to indicate all members of a group, occupation, etc., or things of a particular type): Take your factory worker, for instance. Your power brakes don't need that much servicing.

@SPENCERG: Something tells me this is not going to end well. I think thats an auto-bahn on Lifehacker.
@The_IT_Crone: Yeah a quick google video search will net you almost any music video you could want, no extra stuff needed.
I seriously doubt this is going to boost sales of the PS3.
@SPENCERG: Psst...it's not easy, but here on the Internet we have to try to keep that kind of thing bottled in. It tends to upset the locals. I know it hurts. This is the pillow I cry into at night...
While this is nice, it's not really something that will get those people who are still on the fence about buying a PS3 to commit.
I mean, if it wasn't $400, if it had backwards compatability, if more people cared about BluRay, then it might sell better than it does currently. But adding music videos, most of which will likely be from Sony, doesn't really cost them anything, but doesn't really add much to the value of the system.
I'm a gamer, and the PS3 is the only system I don't own. Sony just has not made it worth my while, and I'm willing to wait until they do. All of the games I want to play will still be there when they do.
Exactly. This is nothing but a ploy to sell more music. Brainwash the masses by making them think they're getting something of value for free, when it reality, it's just a commercial!
@T Axel Jones: What exactly are you talking about? Are you talking about proprietary video formats or games? Either way, the PC is just as proprietary as a console. If you buy a Windows game you're stuck playing it in Windows, just like you're stuck playing a PS3 game on a PS3. If you download a game from Steam, you're just as restricted as if you download it from PSN or Xbox Live. If you download a video from a legal download service, you're just as DRM restricted as downloading a video from PSN or Xbox Live. If a game has SecureROM, it's even more restrictive than a console. The only time a PC is less proprietary and restrictive is when you're running Linux and pirating movies.

@AirIntake:
Ssshhhh
Logic only upsets those that have to upgrade and install HARDWARE with every AAA... Sorry AA... okay A title that comes out for PC... a year or so after it already hit the consoles.

Banhammer-noun. A tool used by moderators to forcibly impart proper behaviorial standards upon the lesser beings of the Internet. Side effects include being knocked clean into the next zip code.
@punkrawka: And they are censored. I bought one and it was "edited for content". I hope Sony doesn't decide to do this.
And I also hope they feature videos from artists outside the mainstream.
That's just what I want; shitty pop music I wouldn't listen to in my car, on my pc, or in my house now on a console. It's not like they will be hosting anything older than 2000; I'd be willing to bet it will be targeted at teens. I'd name a bunch of shitty bands that teens love but I don't know any or give a shit. I'll just stick to pc gaming.
@DoktorGoku: You can actually already watch VidZone through the PS3 browser too...just not download. Integrating into the XMB will allow for background music while ingame.

@Lucifer_Cat: Lifehacker isn't associated with Consumerist anymore, so that doesn't matter :)
@Skankingmike: There is a citation, reread the post.
The people who write these articles are "professionals" and are paid to do their job, so there's no excuse for mistakes really.
And on topic (comments are supposed to be on topic, right!?), this seems pretty cool, but can't you just go on youtube and watch the videos there? I suppose this is a bit more nice since most PS3s are connected to a TV, which is typically larger than a computer monitor.
@KsprayDad (Not playing with his Wii much either): That sounds pretty cool. Free music, basically? :D

Yes you are right, console titles come out about a year later for pc. But you are wrong about having to upgrade hardware that frequently. I went 4 years with the same video card before finally upgrading. Console gamers buy new consoles that often. And games on a pc will ALWAYS look better than any console. Xbox 360 specs are no where near the specs of my pc, and when I play games like Call of Duty 4, it is very obvious pc's are superior.

The only part of this that's really news in the console wars is "free." Xbox Live has music videos too, but they cost too much to hold much appeal for anyone. Having a huge library that's free could be a decent win for PSN.
