Soderbergh Subverts The Theater Experience Again

3599 views

One of the hotter indie flicks of the summer, Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience, debuted on Amazon's rental service this week, way before the movie opens in theaters May 22. At $9.99 for a three-day rental, the movie is also cheaper to rent than it will be to see at many theaters.

Soderbergh, the director famous for Sex Lies and Videotape, Traffic and way too many preening Ocean's flicks, tried the tactic back in 2006 with Bubble, which opened on TV, in theaters and on DVD within the same week, as well as January with Che, which was available on cable on demand services as it played in limited release around the country.

The new movie stars porn star Sasha Grey as a high-class call girl.

Soderbergh shot the movie mostly with non-actors in 16 days during October 2008 on a $1.7 million budget. Jackson West of Newteevee.com says Soderbergh's unorthodox production and distribution systems could be the future.

The minimal expense and maximal margins of digital distribution mean the film can take that chance. And the upside for the producers - among them Mark Cuban, who will also be airing it on his HDNet later this month - is potentially astounding. But even if it didn't have a racy subject and a well-known porn starlet, or a big name director and cutting-edge cinematography, by releasing it online the film stands to take advantage of online promotion and marketing in a way that others can't.

But is the hooker's heart made of gold? And does Sasha go full frontal? You won't have to wait until May 22 or leave your house to find the answers yourself.

Don't waste your money. The movie is dreadful and awful and boring. Even if you were just looking for some torrid sex scenes - THERE ARE NONE! This movie was so awful I was trying to figure out how to get a refund for downloads. Don't see it on Amazon or in the theaters.

These days, I'll take the at-home experience for $9.99. No babysitter, no cell-phone talkers, no rude idiots conversing through the entire film. If I'm not mistaken, the pic is of the Heart Theater in Effingham, IL. Sad to see that it is once again closed as I have very fond memories of seeing a lot of films there as a kid (Empire Strikes Back, E.T.). Of course, in those days cell phones weren't carried around in your pocket and people (kids and adults alike) were a lot more respectful.

$10 to rent a movie? No thanks.

It might be worth it if they made it $5...but as it is, I can see a movie in the theater for $10, or just wait for NetFlix to have it (and NetFlix LOVES their indie flicks).

I think theaters need this kind of competition. I hardly ever bother going anymore. For what I pay just in tickets I can buy the DVD just by waiting a few months. Then I get to avoid the overpriced tickets and food, having to share a theater with obnoxious strangers, and gross, sticky floors. And now that there are commercials in the previews, it's even more annoying. Maybe if they lost one of their major advantages (besides a large screen and big sound system), they would have to try to make the experience better or at least a better value.

Plus they could work it like concerts and sell the DVD and Blu-Ray as people leave the theater.

Every time I hear Soderbergh now, I think of Matt Damon's impression of Matthew McConaughey, "Uh... Mr Soderbergh, I today's scene would be a good opportunity for me to take my shirt off."

@nakedscience: ...unless you and your SO wanted to go together. With this rental, it's $10 for as many people as fit in your living room.

BTW, I wouldn't do this either, but because my computer is slow and unreliable, and plus the indie theater near me is a real treat to visit, worth the expense.

I haven't been to a mjor theater in years for the reasons you mentioned, plus the soda commercials are blaring at full volume beginning 15 minutes before the previews start, meaning my wife and I can't even hold a conversation while waiting for the movie.

The exception is the indie theater; we have two. It's a much more relaxing, enjoyable, and frugal decision. And the movies are usually more interesting, too!

@cabjf: I agree - even if this particular model isn't the next big thing, the movie theater as we know it has outlived itself.

There are too few movies being released that demand to be seen in a theater, there are way too many other options for seeing a movie, and theaters in general have just become an unpleasant way to see a film, for all the reasons you state.

I do think there's a place for movie theaters, but they need to seriously revamp their business model.

I've seen several of these movies before their theatrical release (latest was Mutant Chronicles, before that was The Great Buck Howard) on one of the channels we get with Direct TV. I can say that they have all been mediocre movies that I would never have seen in a theather. I saw the ads for this movie, but didn't even bother setting up the DVR to record it based on the past experience with these "sneak peak" movies.

@cabjf:
I haven't been to the theatre since the last star wars movie and before that, episode II. When I was in my teens I used to go at least twice a month as the tickets were decently priced but now I think theyre like $10 or $12 and I don't like going to a movie by myself so 20-24$ = a brand new DVD. And yea now they show commercials for like 20 minutes and the price of tickets is still going up ? Its like you can come to the movie 30 minutes late and the previews are still going. I don't think I'm ever going to go back to a theatre ever again unless another star wars movie comes out.

I used to go all the time, but I've seen exactly 2 movies in theaters in the past 6 years. I don't know if I got to where I get annoyed too easily or if people got noticably more rude. I got tired of having to tell people to stop kicking the back of my seat, and it wasn't always children doing it. Not going to pay that much for that experience.

user-pic

Girl Friend Experience? I usually have to pay an extra $150 per hour for that.

user-pic

@Applekid:

Well, it sounds like Sasha Grey is out of your league - in the movie, she charges $2k/hour.

I prefer the movie theater, no matter the commercials, although sometime the teenagers are annoying. But that's why you complain and have it taken care of. Movies are a shared experience and much more fun to watch in public.

@anduin: Part of the problem with rising ticket costs and ads before the film is caused by the studios. They take most of the money the box office makes, meaning that theaters have to take any cash they can get, namely from ads and concessions. As theater attendance goes down due to DVDs, they have to get more creative/relentless to stay afloat.

user-pic

It only takes waiting 6 months of not going to the movie theater then everything that shows up on movie channels, pay-per-view, netflix, amazon VOD, XBL video marketplace is NEW to you.

Speaking as an owner of a 1080p projector and a 120" screen, this news is relevant to my interests.

BTW, this has nothing to do with the theaters. They are just fine other than the ass raping for the foodstuff prices. It's you other movie goers. You are all a bunch of rude, loud, disrespectful, douche bags ruining the experience for others. And its not just the kids, some of you adults act worse than the kids.

Even more weird. I'm a complete counter culture punk rock guy who just happens to be respectful of others in public. Don't be a douch bag... mmmkay?

I have been to one other movie at a theater since LOTR came out. I watched most of LOTR dodging the huge head of the tall guy who sat in front of me. That was in between the chick behind me talking on her phone and someone banging into my seat frequently. The typical chain theaters suck. I would rather wait until something comes out on DVD because that is better experience than the misery that is the typical theater.

"At $9.99 for a three-day rental, the movie is also cheaper to rent than it will be to see at many theaters."

It amuses me to see stuff like this. As it is I rarely go to the movies thanks to Netflix, but if I had to pay as much as people on the coasts, I'd never go.

I usually go on Friday or Saturday mornings to the first showing. No crowds, half price tickets. I saw the new Star Trek in the IMAX theatre and it was great.
My wife wanted coffee, so we stopped at Quik Trip before we went, and avoided that cost.

@synergy: I shake my fist at you. $10.50-$11 at my local theater.
